I'll tell you, the day she was at my house and chose to speak to me? I felt like I won the lottery. I did a carpool to dance class with the mom of the child with selective mutism. One of the very last times I dropped her off. She smiled, said thank you, and went in her house. Definitely felt the same way!

I have no experience with this. I'm curious, what type of medicine is prescribed? What is its purpose?

This topic and your responses has been a very interesting read for me. I’ve been teaching preschool for several years and have definitely see this in the classroom- my own and others. I read this recently and it’s actually quite good, especially when you get to the Treatment section.. any case, it supports my own opinion that this type of disability is best left to the pro’s 🙂 These were otherwise engaged kids who participated in classroom activities. So at that age, it seems to work to just go with it. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_mutism

I have no experience with this. I'm curious, what type of medicine is prescribed? What is its purpose? I have no idea yet, but I would think it's probably anti-anxiety medications, whatever they are....since selective mutism is an anxiety disorder.

Thanks everyone for your experiences. My neighbors are headed down to the school this morning to meet with the principal. I mentioned to the mom about how they needed to get started immediately (thanks elaine for that suggestion) because of how identification timelines work. I don't think they really thought about how long all this might take. I know I was thinking it would just be a matter of helping him with his anxiety and voilà the problem would fix itself. Nope, apparently not.

I had a student with selective mutism when I did my student teaching in Kindergarten back in 2006. Adorable little girl. We always made sure to specifically include her in any and all activities. One of us would make sure to check in with her during any seat work to reinforce any concepts. For this particular child, she needed some prompting to complete work, not that she wasn't capable, but at times she would just sit and not do the work. We always made sure to check in and hold her accountable for her work.
On my last day of student teaching her mom had her call the classroom after school to thank me. It was so nice to finally hear her voice. She was an absolute chatterbox on the phone. It made my year getting to chat with her.
So I would suggest seeing if the child it willing to engage in a phone call with the teacher before the school year and possible additional check ins throughout the year to see how the student's understanding is progressing.
