ETA: So, I have never ordered from the mobile app. The person I’m speaking on behalf of (don’t know what to call them anymore) Selects the in-store option for the mobile ordering and then arrives to a closed lobby with a note on the door saying drive through only. And I guess the in-store option just can’t be taken off from the mobile app.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Isn’t the mobile ordering option for picking up your order right when you arrive? And the option can be not available at times. Our local Starbucks has the mobile ordering open even when their lobby is closed. So then you have to go to the drive through to pick up your order which can be quite a line to wait in and it would make no difference from mobile ordering to ordering at the window. So then what’s the mobile ordering for?
(Speaking on behalf of someone else)
I hate that their lobby is closed most of the time. I’ve pretty much given up on the local Starbucks since they only ever have the drive thru only open.
Mobil for drive thru is beneficial to many who 1. Sign, 2. Do not speak and use ACC devices, 3. Have anxiety, 4. Have executive functioning disorder.
It can be very helpful for many. And should be an option for anyone who feels it would help them in ordering and retrieving a drink.
To me, mobile app means convenience. Convenience is going through the drive thru, so yes, the mobile app should be available any time the store is open. If I got to the Starbucks to pick up my order and the line was forever long, I would call and cancel the order and go elsewhere. We have a ton here in my city, so I wouldn't have to drive that far to another one or even go to a competitor.
ETA: I also like to order via mobile as it gives me time to browse the menu. It seems our Starbucks only have a few things on the menu boards and sometimes I like to try something differnt.
I do think they should have some notification when you are using the mobile app that you have to utilize the drive thru though. At the Stbx nearest my house I use mobile app for speed. I wouldn't make an order if drive thru was the only option, they are always busy and slow.
I do mobile app and then go through the drive through so I can see which Starbucks has the food items I want without going to multiple locations.
The sandwich I eat is always selling out.
The Starbucks I frequent has no drive thru. There are days that the mobile ordering is shut off so you have place your order in store. I am never sure why they turn off the mobile part on some days, maybe those are the days they are short staffed. However it looks to be the same amount of employees in there when it is shut off.
? Maybe it is because most of the Starbucks here aren't drive-thru, but even when the lobby is "closed", they have you come in and pick up coffee from a designated spot at the counter, and I use my mobile app for that all the time (I think most of the stores here are back open for dine-in, but for a long time with COVID, they weren't, and I am not 100% sure they all are now). The mobile app usually has about a ten-minute delay for me between order and pickup, but that was true before COVID as well (there is a Starbucks about fifty feet from my office, and I have the timing down ).
I don’t know about Starbucks, but it’s so irritating for a business to advertise mobile ordering and then NOT offer it consistently. The Raising Canes we usually go to will at times turn off their mobile ordering and it’s totally annoying. I live 15-20 minutes away with traffic, and their drive through line is almost always *at least* 15 minutes long. Canes mobile ordering has a GPS feature so it will track your vehicle on the way to the restaurant so the food is ready to go when you get there. So if I can’t order on the mobile app, that means it’s going to be over 45 minutes before I’m sitting down to eat my food.
When our lobby is closed, the lobby is technically still open for you to go in and pick up your mobile orders, they just aren't taking orders inside.
Mine has notified me after I complete it how to pick it up, I agree, a heads up would be nice. It can be really frustrating to use the mobile app thinking you're saving time to show up and have to sit in a really long line and the drink is watered down or cold when you get it. I totally get what people are saying about it's still helpful for many people when only drive thru is open, though.
You can’t drop this and not tell us which sandwich we should be hunting for 😂. I love the ham and Swiss. What’s your favorite?
I just noticed that they show pickup options at checkout too, and let you choose, if both are available.
The problem is they have the in-store option open and the lobby closed. And apparently they can’t just take off the in-store? Corporate has been notified of this but nothing got done. Why don’t they just go to get coffee somewhere else? Because they are resilient.
The two Starbucks I go to don't have a drive thru but the one that does is always long and takes forever - I'll give you that ... I'd rather just sit in the line and order at the window and get my drink 'fresh' the know it was sitting there for 20 minutes before I could get it. I've never been forced into mobile ordering and not being able to go inside, even during the pandemic my stores would just have a table outside and prevent people from coming in and make us stand 6 ft apart to wait.
As far as stopping taking orders it's usually because there's a major dumpster fire scenario in the restaurant. Maybe I'm 30-45 minutes behind schedule and getting told off by every single person trying to come in. Maybe it's a holiday or big local event and we just can't keep up, even with staff. Maybe someone just placed a HUGE order and threw off the flow of the day. It could be so many things! I've also dont it because I was short staffed - I had an employee not show up to work and just myself on duty and a soccer team and their families showed up 45 people deep no notice - no way I could do mobile orders on top of that!
Dd works there and has told me stories. And she says that the estimated time for the mobile order pickup says the same time even if it’s multiple people putting in orders. 15 orders, same time frame, line them up. They have had to close early because the openers would close. Before she started driving I would pick her up and it would be entertaining sitting in the parking lot and counting how many cars would pull up and park and try to get in the lobby, even after they slowly drove by to read the big sign in front of the door that says CLOSED. And then it’s like someone else driving by watching someone trying to get in would park and try it too 🤦🏻♀️
And then it’s like someone else driving by watching someone trying to get in would park and try it too 🤦🏻♀️ Nailed it! We were at a point with staffing where we were considering picking one day a week to close so we could all just have a day off. It's just crazy. You literally never know who's going to show up. Some days I have a full staff and some days I'm alone. People come and go with no notice anymore. It's basically a free-for-all. It's crazy what guests will do. We had this guy come in and his order wasn't ready, it was waiting on a salad. Flipped his shit. Started RIPPING. OPEN. OTHER. BAGS that were sitting nearby waiting to get picked up - he was trying to find a salad in one of them because "he didn't have time to wait". It's also funny to me when people get mad because, "I just ordered one thing" - yes, you did sir. But you're behind about 1364 people who didn't order just one thing and we just go in order of tickets received. Sorry, dude. I get it, but again, what do you expect on a Friday night? My personal favorite is, "Well, the email I got said it would be ready at such and such time" - yes, I realize you were quoted a pick up time but the computer didn't know 2 of my cooks were not there today. Or whatever the case may be. Again, totally understand the WHY behind getting frustrated and impatient but at the same time if you walk into a place that's obviously slammed then you should expect some leniency.
