(CNN)Two people were rescued after falling into a tank full of chocolate at the Mars M&M factory in Pennsylvania Thursday, officials said. Both patients were transported to the hospital, Assistant Supervisor Nick Schoenberger of Lancaster County 911 Dispatch told CNN. "One patient was transported by ground and one person was transported by helicopter," Schoenberger said. The extent of their injuries is unknown. "Fire crews have eliminated pulling them straight out of a tank," Brad Wolfe, communications supervisor for Lancaster County 911 dispatch, told CNN earlier on Thursday. "They have to cut a hole in the side of the tank to get them out," he said.
Wolfe said that it's unclear how the people fell into the chocolate tank. No injuries have been reported at this time, according to Wolfe. A Mars Wrigley spokesperson told CNN: "We are actively managing the situation and our primary focus is supporting emergency teams on site." www.cnn.com/2022/06/09/us/chocolate-tank-rescue-pennsylvania/index.htmlBolding is my "Why?" and does anyone else have Augustus visions when he got stuck going up the chocolate chute in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory? LOL And does this mean they have to dump out the chocolate since it was contaminated?

In the In the article it says no injuries were reported, then why in the world did they helicopter one of them? Trying to imagine what the injuries could be. Chocolate melts and is tempered around 88 degrees, that wouldn’t be enough to cause a burn.

I wonder if it could be a crushing injury with the weight of all that chocolate.
I have seen TV shows where they talk about trying to pull someone out of a tank of something like that can actually pull them in half. Ew.

I wonder if it was melted chocolate or a powder form? Would that be called cocoa though and not chocolate?

There was a song by the Smothers Brothers way back when I was a kid about falling in a vat of chocolate and yelling fire ( not to make light of this story if they were hurt).
I can’t find it/link it due to a crummy internet connection here but way back I thought it was good. ( again sorry if they were seriously hurt, can’t find the info now).

For sure and I’d be happy to demonstrate!

Well, seeing it was dry chocolate, then A.) I guess it could be accidentally inhaled if in powder form as opposed to beans or nibs. and B.) If they had to cut a hole in the tank to retrieve the employees, then I imagine all of the chocolate in the tank spilled all over the floor and that tank will need to be replaced anyway, so we're all safe from contaminated chocolate in the system.

Darn, I was picturing swimming in melted chocolate and taking a mouthful as I swam along. Since it was dry chocolate, my vision of melted chocolate pouring out where the firemen had to cut the tank is also destroyed. I guess I don't really see this as big news. People fall at their jobs all the time and it doesn't appear in the newspaper. Falling into hard dry chocolate would be embarrassing and possibly painful depending on how you fell but not worth reporting on national news.
Well, unless HOW they fell is an interesting story. Were they pushing and fighting on the walkway that goes between vats? I agree with you, I need more information on this.

I wonder if this can be compared to one of the numerous dangers of working on a farm, falling into a grain bin. You sink into the grain, can't get back to the surface, and the weight of the grain suffocates you, like being caught in an avalanche. That would explain the urgent need to cut into the tank for the rescue, to get the chocolate material out ASAP and locate the victims.
