I can't even tell you how much I needed this weekend and how thrilled I am that after one weekend we have basically an entire summer of plans. We've been here 7 months and my only friends are my bestie and her kids who we moved here to be near and a girl that I met in a facebook group that we realized lived really close and we've walked our dogs together a couple of times.
There is a pop-up shop next door and a few weeks ago we saw this guy coming out of the building and he said hi to my dogs so bff and I chatted with him and he thought we followed him home like lost puppies (we live in the building also, he just thought we were weirdos.) We ended up inviting him to see our apartments (each one is different) and then we went to see his. He had a barbers chair so I got super duper excited and he ended up giving me a 2am fade (the best haircut I've legitimately ever had). A week or so later I saw him again and we exchanged numbers so i could let him know when we needed an appointment.
Thursday night, we decided to go to Happy Hour across the street. A group of women came in and sat near us at the bar. We moved over and asked how they knew each other and bought them a round. They are all members of a facebook group that I'm in so we squealed and took a pic and chatted for a while. I ended up just being blunt and saying "Listen, we're new here and I don't have any friends. Do you want to be my friends?" They laughed at me and said definitely. We're going out next week again.
While we were there the barber called to see if we wanted to stop by so DH could get a beard trim. While he was getting his haircut I apparently decided that we should have a get together at our place the following night but told him I didn't have any friends so he should bring his and share them with us. He laughed at me too but was like "I mean, your technique is different but I'm not mad at you." We were looking for middle aged couples or people who know how to have fun without being crazy. This dude is fun, like he'll be a friend for life i'm sure.
He text Friday morning and he was like 'if you're serious I have some friends that y'all would like' so we planned it. I had seen a couple of people around the building that I talked to semi-regularly so I invited them up too. We ended up with 2 couples, the barber, 4 other women, and another man. We just had drinks on the patio, some really good conversations, and they loved us so they're sending the summer schedule. One has a pool, one has a boat, one has a pond, and ATVs and we've got the patio so we're in the rotation and I'm so thrilled to spend more time with them and I'm impressed with his picks for friends to share, they are wonderful.
During the day on Friday, one of my besties kids friends had a friend who stopped by and is starting a tattoo career so I connected with her and got a new (and my new fav!) tattoo done, and bonded with one of her friends who is begging to dog sit for us (HELL YES!) They're young so I asked them to send me any friends who want to dog sit, clean, or have other fun talents that are able to be hired out and also put them on future daughter-in-law watch if they have any fun single friends for my kid.
I have an Aunt that lives about 2 hours from us, near the beach and we went down there a few months ago to have dinner with her in-laws and a few friends. We went back on Easter with her in-laws, husband, and babies, and then her friends had her invite us for a pool party on Saturday- that group is my aunt, her husband, her in-laws, another couple and one of their best friends. They have quickly turned into family also and we're planning a dinner one Saturday every month and they booked their vaca spot for their yearly beach trip and invited us to go along from now on.
Apparently, for me the only way I'm going to make friends is by being blunt and saying " i need friends, do you have any that want to hang out with me"
It's a bit unconventional, but do you really expect anything else from me? Awkward won this time!
I have pics to share, but Tapatalk isn't working so heres is a link to my weekend recap on TikTok if you want to see how it went
