If so, which one(s) and what did you like and not like about it?
We just got back from our second all inclusive vacation in Mexico. We had fun, but we have decided that we probably aren't all inclusive people. We can only sit around at the pool/beach so much and while the drinks were good, even that gets boring after a while and the food is just blah. And this resort has really good reviews and people go on about the food. Maybe it's just not to our taste, but I think those people don't know good food and the nature of all inclusive just doesn't work well with food.
We'd like someplace tropical, where we can go off site and see historical/architectural sites, see the local culture while feeling relatively safe with precautions. We'd prefer a hotel/NON all inclusive resort, but are not opposed to a vacation rental. We enjoy great food (doesn't have to be fancy at all, just delicious food), good bars, history, architecture, nice beaches/pools. We are not particularly adventurous people as far as activities, though we do love boat rides/tours. But ziplining, scuba diving etc are not for us.

OK, Im curious. Where did you stay in Mexico?
We went to an all-inclusive in Mexico back in March and absolutely loved it...but we also left the resort and didn't just lay around at the pool and beach.
We've been to:
St John (favorite) St Thomas St Maarten Jamaica (our least favorite) Bahamas Haiti Barbados Mexico Honduras

It’s been a long time but I’ve been to Bonaire several times. It’s one of the Dutch Caribbean ABC islands, with Aruba and Curaçao the A and the C. Bonaire is more for scuba diving than anything. Curaçao was more my taste than Aruba, lots of interesting history but beaches and reefs too, though I didn’t spend a long time in either one. People hop from island to island since it only takes about 30 minutes.

We also should not have gone in June, that was a mistake also, it just unfortunately was the only time we could fit in this year that worked for all of us (we went with another couple). Any further trips to tropical locations will have to be in the winter, early spring as I just do not do well with temperatures that hot.

I've been to Bahamas, senior HS trip and Aruba on my honeymoon. So I was in the Caribbean a LONG, LONG, LONG time ago. I loved Aruba. I didn't want to go because I didn't think there was anything to do but there's plenty to do if you want to do it.

We really like Turks and Caicos and St. John - we’re trying different part of Bahamas in August - last time was way too touristy but this is supposed to be quieter. We’re big scuba divers - but the food was great on both

We have been to Aruba, St. John, Bahamas, Antigua, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic. We like to explore when we travel. St. John is our favorite and we are going back in January. I would say the Dominican Republic was the last on our list. The resort was beautiful, but I didn't like being in a compound and the majority of us got sick for up to two weeks after and we didn't drink the water.
Each island has something different to offer. In Antigua we stayed at an all-inclusive with great water sports on the property. We explored the island one day which was amazing. But is was sort of boring at night time.
St. John is laid back but tons of different beaches to snorkel on. Or dive. There is hiking as well. Renting a house/condo is the way to go there.

Have you ever considered taking a cruise? We’ve gone on a couple western Caribbean cruises through Disney Cruise Lines that we all really enjoyed. That way you can visit and explore several places all while having a single home base on the ship. You can do as much or as little as you want, and the food and service we experienced on Disney was exceptional as was the entertainment. There are also eastern and southern Caribbean itineraries if those areas would be more your thing. Then if you discover a place you would really love to explore more, you can always book a separate vacation later to go back to that specific place.

We've been to quite a few great islands (and Mexico and Costa Rica), and we've never spent the entire time on the beach. We tend to go for a week and have 3-4 excursion days per vacation. We've also done a cruise and that provides good food as well as a different opportunity to explore each day. On our last cruise, we went to 5 different islands (St John, St Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Lucia and Barbados). Barbados was our favorite and we plan to go back there after seeing a day of the sights.

We’ve been to quite a few Caribbean countries.
Cuba Bahamas (not technically Caribbean) Dominican Republic St. Lucia Honduras Mexico (much prefer Cozumel over Riviera) Curaçao Belize Cayman Islands (prefer Little Cayman over Grand Cayman) Antigua Cost Rica (though we stayed on the Pacific side) Nicaragua
Our favourites are Cuba, Belize, & St. Lucia (Soufriere, not Castries).
ETA * We’ve done some amazing tours in some of these countries (Nicaragua, Cuba, & Antigua particularly). The key for us is looking for more cultural and less touristy trips - they tend to be less crowded. Sometimes so ‘less crowded’ that we’ve been the only ones on the tour. Those are the best because the guide is often willing to skip the programmed stuff and take us off the beaten track. In Antigua, for example, we ended up forgoing the five-star restaurant with the white table cloths and boring-ass food, and going to a nameless road-side shack with the BEST fish and home-made sorrel.

We are currently looking at St Lucia - the Coconut Bay resort.
We’ve done Cuba and Dominican once each, lower budget at the time. So we are upping the budget and going just the two of us, no friends/family along.
We want to relax for a week. Our last vacation was 11 days in California - Disney, Hollywood, cruise up:the coast - lots of walking and sight seeing. So this time is a sit and chill. We will likely do an excursion and some activities at the resort like kayaking.
So looking forward to getting away!

I'm with CardBoxer -- do the ABC's - especially Curacao! We loved Curaçao. We did a great dive excursion to Klein Curaçao - there was no place to dock the dive boat so, during our surface interval, we just swam to shore to explore the light house. We bought lobsters from some guys in little boats (where they actually came from was beyond me because it’s hours from pretty much everything) and cooked it on the beach for lunch.

I used to travel a lot with 1st husband until we had children......... I did go to:
*Bermuda *Bahamas *St. Maarten *Barbados
(and probably a bunch more, but I can't remember!!). I DO remember that I literally jumped off of the motor scooter thing in Bermuda. It was ridden on the opposite side of the road. There were steep turns and dangerous roads everywhere. I'm glad I jumped off because I found the most gorgeous, pristine beach with the pinkest sand and bluest water!! LOVE Bermuda!!!!!!!!!
As far as doing all of the other activities, nope. I do local shopping. I do love to see the history. I like to go to the underground clubs. I don't zipline or ride a horse in the water, etc. Nope. My idea of vacationing is to lie on the beach in peace. I loved getting sprayed down with water to cool off.......

Barbados and Antigua are our favourites. Least favourite is definitely the Bahamas, and dh did not like St Lucia for some reason.
I agree with the recommendation to take a cruise - you can check out a bunch of different islands without making a huge commitment, to decide where you would like to go back

I've travelled to Bahamas, St. Lucia and Grand Cayman.
I liked Bahamas, but Grand Cayman is my favorite for sure. Beautiful beaches, but also a lot to do. Public transport worked.
St. Lucia was beautiful but as a solo woman I got tired pretty fast with men trying to sell something or offering other things. I just wanted to walk in peace. 🙂

I've been to St Lucia, St Thomas, St John, the ABCs and I'm throwing in Puerto Rico.
I'd go back to any of them, but St John is my favorite with so much exploring to be had. It's small and easily navigable.
Not an island, but Costa Rica or Belize were amazing trips. One day when I magically obtain wealth, I'd like to buy a place in the Nicoya peninsula of Costa Rica and soak up the Blue Zone magic.

As a SCUBA diver, I've been to many...my favorite, esp. if traveling with a non-diver, is Belize. While not technically an island, there are lots of islands off the coast where you can stay. There is a LOT to do that is not water sports: cave tubing, mayan ruins, zip lining, lots of zoos and nature parks. Ambergris has that 'tropical island vibe' with lots of restaurants and bars. You can rent a golf cart and drive all over the island too, which is fun.

We really prefer the all-inclusive. We're gong to St. Lucia in August and Cabo San Lucas in oct.

I'll disagree with others on the cruise part - I didn't really feel like we got an sense of the islands we went to on our cruise. I had to go back and try and see what all we hit as all I remembered was Cozumel (not an island and hotter than Hades) and Cayman (we did a sting ray experience so not sure we saw much of all of the actual islands). Maybe it was different as our kids were pretty young when we went.

On our cruises we’ve seen enough of a place to say, “That was fun, wouldn’t mind going back there for a longer trip” and also “Uh, next time we don’t really need to get off the boat there again!”

Yes, I've been to:
St. John USVI (3 times, two weeks each for two times, 3 weeks this past December) Jamaica (one week in Negril, Jamaica) Bermuda (1 day stop on a cruise)
When we were in Jamaica 27 years ago we stayed at an all-inclusive resort, got married there and honeymooned. It was my first time at an all inclusive resort. I'd read about a craft market nearby and wanted to go to it-we got a taxi from our resort and went one afternoon. As soon as we got out of the taxi we were bombarded with locals trying to sell their wares-pressing in on us and not letting us move at all. Soon there was a big crowd and we decided to forget it-hopped back into the taxi and went back to the resort. Being at the resort-sometimes if felt so groomed and homogenized that it could have been anywhere-they even raked the sand on the beach every day!
I read about St. John in a "Family Fun" magazine in 1997 and it sounded so much more like what we were looking for. I don't like sitting on a beach with a drink in my hand all day-that's not me. I like to explore when I travel and take a ton of photos (that's my idea of fun). I also adore snorkeling and swimming. 2/3 of St. John is National Park which means it is protected. You won't find a lot of condos and buildings on St. John beaches-they are wild and beautiful. St. John has 39 beaches and almost all of those offer great snorkeling right off the beach (great not having to pay for a boat ride to get out to the reef). I also love history (there are several ruins to explore), and there are a ton of hiking trails.
We had such a great time on our first visit that we've been back twice. St. John is my idea of heaven. I love it there and would move there if I could afford it.

Most of the time we avoid the cruise areas especially on docking days when we’re staying somewhere. Ymmv
