Good that she was quick to react, but not good that it’s the second time this swimmer has needed rescuing.

It seems like if this has happened twice, maybe she should give up competitive swimming. I know it would be devastating for a world class athlete to give up their sport, but drownings happen so fast. Even lifeguards don't always recognize what is happening until it is too late, which was almost the case in this instance.

I would question if she was actually having a seizure on the pool.

Seriously, time for a new sport.
If you pass out on the track you can be seen immediately AND breathe!

Good that she was quick to react, but not good that it’s the second time this swimmer has needed rescuing. I was just thinking the same. I wonder if she needs further medical test for something that might not be so apparent generally. An underlying condition that maybe hasn't been picked up. It happens, things get missed on routine tests.

Awesome that the coach noticed an jumped in when the lifeguards weren't reacting. But how did a second US swimmer also jump in and come to their aid when the lifeguards still hadn't reacted? Wouldn't the lifeguards at least try to assist once they realized? Did they still not notice the rescue going on in the pool?

What happens the day that particular coach is not there?

Next time I see another joke about lifeguards at the side of Olympic swimming pool events, I'll point out this story.
She really needs to get to the reason for this issue. She's been lucky so far.

Y'all. She's a four-time olympic athlete. I'm quite sure she, her coach, and her doctors will be on the situation. The lifeguards did not react quickly enough, so the coach jumped in.
High-level competing athletes pass out all the time. ALL the time. The fact that this is a water sport does complicate it, but they have underwater cameras and lifeguards; it seems that the failure is on that system and NOT on the athlete.

My dd is not an Olympic swimmer. She competed in HS and tries to swim everyday. She is a WSI certified lifeguard and she says that the lifeguards in this instance were lacking.
She points to the coach saying the lifeguards look paralyzed, that she was worried about having to save the lifeguard.
She says the pandemic has done away with so many lifeguards and swim instructors. Pools were closed and people let their certifications lapse or didn't even get into a pool.
She also agrees that a swimmer of that level should not be fainting. Yes, they do no breathers and push their bodies to the absolute limit, but fainting? She says she should be checks.

FYI this is an artistic swimmer so their routines involve prolonged breath control. I'm glad she's doing well and pretty shocked the lifeguards didn't react sooner.

I don’t know, the lifeguards didn’t jump in. They didn’t rescue her. They didn’t recognize that there was a problem. They still seem like a joke to me.

A family member of mine has recently had some unexplained fainting experiences and I had no idea it was possible to faint while swimming. This has opened up a whole new world of worry for me. (Yes, family member is being checked out - we have a 72 hour holter booked for next week.)

My friend has sister who the other day was playing cards with friends. She has some sort of monitor. She got a call from the company, her heart beat was up to 229. They told to get the hospital immediately.

My oldest DGS fainted at 9 or 10. It was a heart issue that needs to be addressed as an adult.

I know that eating disorders are a huge problem with synchronized swimmers. Starving and/or purging can result in fainting.
My first thought when I heard this on the news last night was to wonder if an eating disorder played a part, given this isn’t her first fainting-in-the-water episode.
