My boss, whom I really like and work closely with on a big yearly project just announced his retirement. While not unexpected, I'm just sad. I like working with him and I felt like I had some momentum toward taking the next step in my career. The subsequent reshuffle, while not awful, is just not conducive to maintaining that momentum and I'm just sad. It also leaves this huge project in limbo and I'm super anxious about how it's going to be solved.

Ah man - that is too bad. I know you are happy for him but at the same time, sad for you, plus since it effects your project, I can see why you are concerned.

I understand completely. The same thing happened to me several years ago and man, it took some time (still a work in progress) getting used to the new supervisor.
Deep breaths, it’ll be okay. I totally validate your feelings.

That’s frustrating. I felt that way when my excellent boss quit to go work for a competitor. I did not like his replacement. We worked so well together and I knew the new replacement guy was going to struggle. I had worked for 10 years with the old boss.
Then after he was in his new job, he called me and asked me to go to lunch..Durning lunch, he kept hinting and asking me who I thought was going to be working with him at the new place doing what I had done. I thought he was trying to get me to train his new assistant or something. The he finally got me to ask him who it would be. He said they didn’t have ANYONE and he pushed the owner’s card toward me on the table. He said he didn’t feel right about directly poaching me so he tried to get me to ask instead. He had already talked me up to the owner and said he was sure the job would be mine. I interviewed at the new place and was offered a job with a $20,000 pay increase! I quit the next day. The replacement boss was really worried because he had no idea how to do what old boss and I did so well. He tried to get me to change my mind. I told him the new salary I would be getting. He stood up and wished me luck. He knew there was no way he could match that. He would be a new supervisor, unproven, and had no pull with his own boss to get me a raise. He himself ended up leaving the company 8 months later.
I know your boss is retiring instead of moving companies, but sometimes something we think is going to be awful turns out to be wonderful. I will cross my fingers for you. Maybe when they see the new guy struggling, they will change your position so that you are more in charge and can get the project back on track. I hope you get noticed. I also hope the retiring boss puts in a good word for you!

I cried when a direct supervisor left. It's hard when you have a great working relationship with someone.
I hope things end up better than you are hoping!

I’m sorry. That shows what a great working relationship you’ve had. I know you wish him well. I hope his replacement will be a good fit and that your project isn’t affected.

I also hope the retiring boss puts in a good word for you! this is a good way to look at it! I hope it works out positively for you, bethany102399. But it is tough when the 'unknown' factor comes into play, especially since you have such a good working relationship with your boss.

I get why you are sad - the unknown is difficult, especially when you have to take the time to establish relationships. I hope things go smoothly.

Regarding the project - perhaps this is your time to step up and shine.

that sucks. a close colleague just resigned a couple of months ago. my boss and i were both bummed because we have been together since the beginning of implementing the program.
things have gotten steadily worse, i just resigned monday. i hated doing it to my boss, but i hope she takes it as a sign to look elsewhere as well - it won't get better - i hope she gets out and find something else too. i am dreading telling the team, but i have the same hopes for them.
i do believe doors close, other doors open so OP, maybe it will have some unintended positives.
