If you are trying to do your part to save planet, and you replace all of the plastic containers in your home with glass and get rid of the plastic…..you are part of the problem!
Use it up! If you already have plastic, use it u til it absolutely begs for mercy. The longer you can keep it in use and out of the landfill, the better. When it’s absolutely not useable anymore, THEN replace it with something that isn’t plastic.
But replacing it all in one big sweep just for the optics of not owning any plastic is NOT good!
Thank you for coming to my TED talk. 😅

Well that just goes against White Lady Organizing Youtube, Instagram and TikTok. You may have started a war! LOL

Although I am not a hardcore person regarding this rule (not buying stuff in plastic), it never made sense to buy it, then put it in something else and get rid of it.. at least try to get some use out of it. Like my laundry pods from Costco that come in the big plastic tub. I try to use that tub for other things.

I bought all new glass for anything that a food item touched. But instead of tossing the plastic, I took it to my craft room and did a major organization project, using every single piece of it in there. I will be keeping it until I am too old to craft any longer. And then hopefully whoever buys my stuff keeps it in the plastic too.

She told me she threw her packet of clingfilm (think it’s called glad wrap in US) away as she was trying to save the planet!

I just saw a comment on a vegan YouTube video of someone who decided to go vegan for the planet , cleaned their fridge and pantry and then threw all the meat products away. They didn’t donate to family because they didn’t want to support their family eating meat.

Yes. -- I've transitioned all our food storage containers to glass. I did throw away some stained plastic containers because they were icky. But the rest of them are in use to freeze soups and sauces (I know technically I could freeze them in my Pyrex but it makes me nervous to put glass in the freezer). My dh uses the smaller ones to take snacks to work, or I use them for the car. Eventually when they crack we'll throw them away.

It drives me absolutely bonkers when these YouTube (I don't do tiktok) try their best to have these 'home edit' pristine organized homes and move milk from one plastic container to another just to have them all match and look pretty.
Stop. Just stop!

Can I throw one away when we've officially lost the lid for it?

Can I throw one away when we've officially lost the lid for it? yes! you have my permission to throw it away if you can't find the lid, lol! do NOT put it back in the cabinet for someone else to (try to) use which leads that person to spend time cleaning out the entire plasticware cabinet only to realize that there isn't a lid for it and all that time was wasted. <sigh> (that's a purely hypothetical situation, of course... )

Can I throw one away when we've officially lost the lid for it? Well you could ...but you should probably go to Pinterest and find some really crafty project that centers around using that one container and about $50 worth of stuff from Michaels you will need to complete the project.

I think this applies to other items beyond plastics. It is better to "use it up or until it dies" rather than tossing it.

While I agree with you in spirit … I think some people are replacing plastic because they don’t want their food stored/reheated in it, not because they’re trying to save the planet.

i agree with you, OP. not only do i use the kitchen plastics to near-death, but i transition them to some kind of garden use until they actually reach death.

While I liked the OP, I agree with this. I got the vibe that she was talking about people who swap things out thinking they are helping the environment.

I transitioned to glass last year. Stbx and the kids still use the plastic. I think stbx took a bunch of it to the camper that he and the succubus live in because most of it is now gone.
For the non lid stuff, I've used them for water dishes for outside for the animals and to fill with soapy water to clean.

I did try to give away as much as possible but still had to throw some away.

Can I throw one away when we've officially lost the lid for it? OR...you can put it into a drawer to keep small things from rolling around. I forgot to say that I also used up the little cheap disposable plastic containers that you use to send leftovers home with a friend or use in a lunchbox. I think Rubbermaid or someone like that makes them? I took those to my bathroom and organized all my hair stuff and then put them in the drawer. I put the frequently used bins on top of their lids because I knew it would bug me to have to keep opening and closing them. The seldom used had their lids snapped on. And now that I am packing up my house, it is so nice to just snap on all of the lids and stack them in a box!

Some are but when your whole IG or YT image is all perfectly coordinated beyond just the plastic containers. It seems like it's more for content than environment. Especially when they have to keep coming out with new content to earn a living.

I bought some plastic food storage containers about a year ago from Costco. Now I wish I had purchased glass instead. I don’t worry as much about sugar and flour and things like.that, just cooked food and leftovers.
It’s expensive to replace everything at once, I just won’t but anything plastic in the future. I would love a whole new pantry storage system.

I would love a whole new pantry storage system. I wanted to move everything to glass, but I also wanted really air tight-lids on things. And I didn’t want to spend a fortune. I ended up buying the larger canning jars. I don’t care for the two-part lids for everyday use so I bought the white plastic (I know, I know) lids for them. At least my food won’t be touching the plastic. And you can buy a few at a time without worrying that you won’t be able to match them in the future when you need more. I just used a nice font on my labeling machine and it looks nice and didn’t cost a fortune.

I’m definitely talking about the Instagram/TikTok content pushers who are just doing it for the “pretty” and to look environmentally concerned. There are lots of totally valid reasons to get rid of plastic containers. I’ve just reached the eye roll stage with the rest. Lol

I’m sitting here (and have been for years) with a container drawer full of glass and a few remaining plastic containers that don’t fit with my nice stacks. Last week I actually rejoiced because I could not find the lid for one of them anywhere and felt justified in recycling it. 😂 (It should be noted that, despite my original joining of this board during its scrapbooking origins, I am the very opposite of crafty.)

Is now the time to remind people that glass has lead in it? (When lead is ingested it can cause brain damage. This is why we test babies & toddlers for lead levels. The youngest & oldest are most susceptible to lead poisoning). The amount of lead depends on the age & quality of glass. Antique glass & crystal have higher lead contents than everyday glass & jars. So don’t store your liquor in those beautiful crystal decanters. If you want to store food in glass, buy new cheap to mid-priced glass since it has the lowest lead content. For once cheaper is better!
All that being said, I don’t follow my own advice. I’m phasing out plastic, but I’m transitioning to old glass that belonged to my great grandparents & grandparents. I also eat off the old orange-red Fiestaware. And don’t even ask about the glazes used on ceramics & China even now... Please don’t shoot the messenger.

Stop. Just stop! OMG I saw an organisation video on Facebook, and the woman did exactly that. She bought a (plastic) bottle of orange juice, then decanted it into a (plastic) jug, for no other reason than it looked prettier in her jug. The whole video was of her decanting shit into other containers, and putting juice boxes into a plastic holder in the fridge etc etc. She got royally roasted in the comments!

I don't necessarily agree...I don't want to store or reheat my food in plastic, so if I had plastic containers for that purpose I would definitely replace them. However, I would probably hold on to them for some other purpose...not toss them.
