Jeremy bought some tickets today for the Mega Millions lottery. I guess it's up to $650M. We were just discussing this and we both decided that we would probably spend a couple years checking off our bucket list travels and such so wouldn't work. But then we'd be bored as hell sitting home together. Hahaha...
So the question is, you win $650M so clearly money isn't any object, but you absolutely must have a job. What would you choose to do?
I would have the Spin-A-Yarn Cafe. A small coffee bar with comfy chairs and good lighting for yarn crafters to come, grab a snack, and sit for hours just doing their thing. I would love to bake the cookies. And I would love to just be able to spend my days there managing things a bit and visiting with fellow crafters.
Jeremy would also like to turn his hobby into his work and he has decided that golf course ownership looks good to him. He'd like to hire his best friend and the two of them run the course. And also get in copious amounts of golf.
So what would you do for work? Fun work, of course, but still a job.

I'd keep doing what I do now, only even less hours. Or perhaps I'd become a professional restaurant reviewer. I'd need a driver so I could also partake of specialty cocktails.

Off the top of my head, without giving it alot of thought, I would open a huge rescue for dogs and cats. A resort place for homeless animals.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will get a couple of tickets, with * my numbers * on them. 🐶🐱

Oh god, I'd genuinely keep my current job 😬
I have zero desire to turn any hobby into a job, and I wouldn't want to own my own business in that situation. Small(er) business owners work harder than anyone else in the company and are pretty much uniformly terrible at staying out of it and letting managers, etc run it. They THINK they will, but they don't.
And I love my job, so.... why not.
OR... Maybe I'd start a self-funded venture capital fund and invest in founders with underrepresented backgrounds - especially women of color, lower SES, formerly incarcerated, etc.
That would actually be way more work than my job now, but would be incredibly rewarding. Yes, I think I'd do that.

Spin-a-Yarn Cafe is a great name!
What a tricky question. I think I would like to run a small, beautiful, beachside hotel somewhere in the Caribbean or Maldives. Or I would offer genealogical research services.

My dream is to travel the world taking photos of the world's cultures, people, nature and so on. With the money won in the lottery I'd have enough to travel and live on. I'd work toward writing a book and publishing the photos to include in the book.

My first thought is I would keep my job! Second thought was that I would be an interior designer but customers are too demanding/unreasonable and it probably wouldn’t really be fun. I settled on keeping my job, but removing the part I am tired of and accepting lower pay since I wouldn’t need the money.
I enjoy my job and it’s very rewarding.

I would keep my job as well. I do hate the commute, however we probably would get a house where I can walk to the school. That would be amazing. Since my husband works remote, that would not be an issue. I'm not sure if he would work or not. It would probably take him 10 to 20 years to get bored of fishing anytime he wants. I would then give my cousin the money to run some sort of animal sanctuary which she has always wanted to do and which I would not be well suited for. That way I could visit the creatures and help her out but not have to deal with all the stress and the minutia that she would be excellent at and would really enjoy.

I would volunteer at a hospital. When I was an RN, the Nurse's aids were such a big help to me, I'd like to repay them for their help and kindness. I'd have to get some new knees first though.

Travel blogger. If I have to do something. A yarn store/cafe would be nice too. Definitely leave teaching. I love where I work and the staff but teaching just isn't fun any more. And I expect this upcoming year to be even less so.

If I won I would not work. I would do what I want when. If my parents win my mom has always said she would give us (my brother and I) as much money as we wanted but we had to continue to work some. I think she would take a consistent volunteer job also. But she is also the person that retired for one year after 50 years of working for the same employer and is now 77 and still works 3 days a week for that employer.🤷🏻♀️ If it was just mine…I would be done, done, done. Hahaha. 😄
I am not sure what I would do but it would be a job that allowed me to leave for long trips, be stress free, and not have to think about it when I wasn’t working. Maybe in a bookstore?

I know I wouldn’t keep my current job. If I did, I would be one of those who would get up from my desk and leave and not come back at the slightest irritation. With $650 million I wouldn’t put up with the BS at work. I thought of owning an art store and SO would own a gym, but we would be silent owners and let a manager run the day to day stuff. I may also have a cat sanctuary. Although we don’t have a cat right now, I love cats.

I would buy a small-ish homestead (maybe about 30 acres or less) work towards being self sustainable as possible. Raise a large garden, free range chickens, small amount of live stock, sell organic produce to some high end restaurants Maybe hire a chef and staff to run my own seasonal restaurant with a menu based on what is available. A kind of farm to table set up.

If I was a multi-millionaire but HAD to work, I would open a sanctuary for older dogs and cats and hire the best vets to help me take care of them.

I want to be your special guest. I would open a huge rescue for dogs and cats. A resort place for homeless animals. I love this. I have a very soft spot for animals. I would definitely be a donor. Oh god, I'd genuinely keep my current job 😬 Honestly, I would love to keep mine too. However, if I won the lottery, I would move from my current city. And I couldn't take my job with me. I want to live on Lake Michigan, though. I think I would like to run a small, beautiful, beachside hotel somewhere in the Caribbean or Maldives. Or I would offer genealogical research services. This sounds wonderful! I'd work toward writing a book and publishing the photos to include in the book. I love that you'd be an author. I might finally have the time on my hands to actually write too. I enjoy my job and it’s very rewarding. I like my job too. If it were fully remote, I'd keep it too. I would have a horse and large dog rescue. Another animal lover! I would keep my job as well. I love that so many of you love what you do!

jeremysgirl, your little shop sounds so appealing, I'd have to take up knitting just so I could come hang out there! I think I would keep my job for now. I enjoy my colleagues, and I love love love seeing young musicians blossom before my eyes. It's interesting to think about what would change if I didn't *need* the job, though. Would I fret less about the petty political machinations? Probably. And I think it might force me to be even more honest than I am already. What an interesting exercise! DH's doc told him not to retire! He said so many health problems start to crop up when people aren't active. If I didn't have a job, I think I'd volunteer at a local church - there are always a million things that need doing. I'd love to start fostering rescue dogs, too.

I would finish my degree.
Open a quirky tea shop/book store. It would be large enough to hold meet ups for knit/crochet, book groups, support groups. Also tables for people to hang out to study, work, whatever.
And, a cat cafe where people can come and enjoy the cats; adopt them; enable elderly people to have a cat companion and not have to worry what happens to the cat after they are moved to a nursing home/die, and help them with the pets care.
One more: Set up a home (our home) for homeless LGBTQ youth. A real home with family dinners and holidays and weekend outings. Help with education and see they have therapy services. A place of full acceptance and love if they would allow it.

I’d do exactly what I’m doing now. I really enjoy my job, my team, and my students.
I am eligible to retire now, but I’m waiting another two years for a significant drop in my cost of retiree healthcare, and may even wait until I’m Medicare eligible.
So if I won, I would start training my replacement and plan to fully retire in 2 years.

I would open a scrapbook/card shop. I’ve scoped out the location. It’s huge (a closed two story Borders store). I wouldn’t want to put my local craft/LSS shop out of business though. So my plans involve moving them into the same space and managing the store together.
I never buy lottery tickets though, so there’s that…

I am retired so any "work" would need to be minimal, as I love free time to putter and do whatever I want at the moment. Perhaps writing, part-time. If I opened any kind of business, it would have to be managed on a daily basis by someone really good, so I wouldn’t have to do it.

My first thought was I would open a fabric store with top quality fabrics. Then I immediately thought of what being a business owner entails (my granny owned a grocery store and FIL owned a machine shop) and said no way! I'd probably stick with what I'm doing now, which is being retired and doing whatever the heck I want to! Would definitely travel more and find worthwhile causes to donate to.

Does volunteer work count? Because we'd both be happy to do more of that! If not, then actually I do know what we'd do----we'd buy up some of the old houses in town that flippers keep buying. And instead of making them all look exactly the same and then selling for a fortune, we'd restore their original craftsmanship & charm, while obviously updating them in terms of electrical, plumbing, etc. And then we'd sell them without having to worry if we made a profit or not. That would make me happy and it would give DH chances to try different projects that he'd love to do, but aren't feasible in our own home. But really, we have SO much work to do on our own home, and a lot of it is bucket list kind of things---the type that's so time consuming and not really important, so that right now we don't know if they will really ever happen. But with more time & money we could actually do those things. And out travel wish list is long enough to keep us busy for ages!
