Our lengthy kitchen remodel is almost done and before I start completely moving everything into the space, I'm trying to think about how we'll use the space and also better organization solutions.
If you have kitchen items that were a problem solver or aha moment, let me know. I don't want to just start shoving things in cabinets or the refrigerator without considering. I've also warned DH not to get married to the idea that something 'goes here' because nothing is set in stone at this point.
Right away, I'd like something to have pull out storage under the sink because things will get lost under there.
Previously we had our knives on a magnetic strip, but that's not a great option, so I'd like a drawer knife organizer for chef's knives, paring knives, tomato knife and kitchen shears.
On another note, is anyone married to a polar opposite cook? Last night I came home after taking my sister to the airport and DH had covered every surface of the kitchen with his chaos while making lasagna. I nearly had a fit. How is it that we gutted and totally revamped the space, adding far more counter surface and he still manages to make it look like a bomb went off? I'm more of a mis en place, clean as I go, listen to a podcast or audiobook and chill cook.

I'm a clean as you go, but for some reason I make a terrible mess when I make lasagne. Lots of pots, every surface etc. We have one of these for our knives. There are nice wooden ones, too. smile.amazon.com/Joseph-85120-DrawerStore-Kitchen-Organizer/dp/B0721TPPZY/Might be too late, but one of my favorite things on my island is a slim pull out spice cabinet. And if someone finds an organizer for Tupperware, I'd love to know. We have a lid organizer and it helps a little.

If you are going to put pull outs into cabinets, I would have them built to maximize the space.

Biggest thing I did when planning our kitchen remodel is once we had a cabinet plan, I went through and figured out where I thought everything would fit and wrote it on the paper. While we have made adjustments over the years, pretty much everything is still in the same place.
As far as built-in organizers we really did not do too much. Must have would be a dedicated cabinet for a pull out trash. A cabinet that is tall enough for sheet pans and the like. I just bought organizers from the kitchen area at Walmart that are similar to file organizers in the office department so that everything can stand up.
I have a wide shallow drawer for all my spices. The drawer is entirely filled with bottles so there really is no need for an organizer as they all line up in rows and columns neatly on their own. I prefer this to narrow long organizer pullouts because it is very easy to see the labels when the bottles are laying flat.
We designed our kitchen specifically to avoid a corner cabinet. We have one corner cabinet in our laundry room and initially had a lazy Susan type of shelf in it. We found that to be extremely limiting, a waste of space and removed it. Now it is the best cabinet where I store supplies like toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, and Kleenex. I can fit all of those in their giant Costco packaging in there with no issues, it's pretty magical.

Our knife block is one of the few things that lives on our counter. They do make knife blocks for drawers too.

Make your own custom sized drawer dividers for cooking utensils and flatware using Drawer Dividers. You can buy poplar boards at Home Depot, etc., which are 1/4" wide and 3-1/2" high. The dividers tap in with a small hammer, and you cut the boards to fit. No wasted space using those dividers you buy in stores. Also, one of these pullout dividers for a base cabinet, or as I use mine; over the refrigerator. Great organization for cookie sheets, pizza stone, cooling racks, etc. My favorite thing is this push opener for my trash drawer and for a bottom drawer in which I keep dish towels, etc. (hands are always wet when I need to open that drawer!) Rev-a-Shelf has lots of storage and organization ideas!

I've enjoyed lazy susans inserted in various cabinets for oils, vinegars, etc. for example... Also those stair-step shelves to help make a shelf full of items more visible. I ordered a tiered lazy susan recently to combine those 2 concepts, but it's on back order.
Also little containers in drawers that have lots of items-- sort of wrangles them into looking less cluttered.
I just received a magnet knife organizer, but haven't installed it yet. Why didn't it work for you?

I have this Wusthof knife holder and like it. This one holds 14 knives and a sharpening steel. They also make a smaller one that holds 7 knives.

I have a knife holder that fits into a drawer and I love it. There are slots for the Chefs and about 5 other knives and then slots for steak knives on top. So many appliances must go on the counter that I don't think you need too many other things taking up counter space. In my pantry, I use dividers for my sheet pans, pie plates and muffin tins. Mine are old but here is a current option: AmazonThe biggest thing that helped me arrange was to stand in my kitchen and really think about how I cooked, what I reached for at what point. Pay close attention to what you don't use very often and put those things the furthest from your main work area.

Why didn't it work for you? The magnet knife organizer was perfect for many years and I actually hung it in our temporary 'camp kitchen' in the basement during the remodel. I just hate to drill into our new backsplash tile to install it, plus it is weird that I'd get OCD when DH would pop the knives on there NOT all turned the same way? LOL

This may not be for everyone, but it really works great for me. I organized my spices in two criss-cross holders side by side on my countertop. It doesn't take up much space and gives me easy access to everything at a glance. (I'm visual - so some things I use a lot I prefer having out where I can see them.) I made the labels out of chalkboard sticker paper and my circle punch. ETA: Oops forgot to add the photo: Also, I have a lazy Susan (sorry about the name, LOL) near the stove for oils, balsamic, pepper grinder, etc.

I love my pull down spice rack. Such a space saver and as a vertically challenged girl, it is helpful to pull them down from the cabinet so I can reach them. (Mine has 4 tiers, I got it at the Container Store)
I also love my lid organizer. Boy, that got rid of a lot of frustrations - I can immediately find the right lid and they aren't rumbling around lose & falling out of in my cabinet.

The link is taking me to cute Amazon puppies, so I typed in To Go containers. I just bought some similar that are also freezer safe to freeze soup in.

DH will be dismayed that I have a huge shopping cart on a few sites for the moment! Bwahahaha
Great ideas to think about and work with.
We did eliminate any corner cabinets, added a trash/recycling pull out cabinet and a pantry filled with pull out shelves. The entire footprint is different except for the general area of the sink, so I need to rethink how things will flow. We just got final plumbing and electric inspections. On Wednesday we get the final inspection and except for some finish work, we have a new space!

Could an opportunistic Beagle figure out how to pop that open and access the delicious trash inside? Not sure about a beagle, but I know for sure my last Belgian would have figured it out. She taught herself to step on the bar and open our kitchen trash can! I should quit reading this thread. We are halfway done with our kitchen update and it's too late to add some of these ideas. That push opener would have been fun to add (the current dog isn't nearly as bright as the Belgian was!).

DH and I sound exactly like you guys and it can drive me to distraction. He may even be in a mis en place mood, not uncommon, but dang if he doesn’t still use every pan we own and cover every inch of counter space some days. We have a ton of spices and I have a set-up similar to this door rack from the Container Store. Ours is the widest version available and covers the entire vertical length of the door. We have 4 or 5 spice shelves (alphabetical order) at the top and then 4 deep storage shelves. The first holds some spice mixes, one holds our different fats, vinegars, cooking alcohol and sweeteners. I love that it’s easy to rearrange when we get a new one or decide to stop keeping one (which happens often). Those with individual places for the spices are often a PITA to switch around. I don’t like things on the counter and we have far too many spices for most spice racks. I also like keeping our other cooking essentials right there at the front of our pantry. It is super easy to look in and see & reach what we have at a glance because the avocado oil isn’t behind 3 or 4 other things. And I love having the fats & vinegars stored together making everything easy to find.

I would also recommend using post-it’s on your drawers and cabinets to label them, move it around as you decide. Don’t move anything in until this step is done. Think about it like real estate, giving the most prized real-estate to items you use often. Consider grouping things into areas where you’ll use them like a baking area with measuring and Pyrex everything, near your mixer. Or, if coffee is a big part of your morning routine, a coffee station near the mugs. I’ve seen people put what they use daily on a pretty tray, you can pull it out and use it and then just push it away to make everything pretty again, even those little bits of ground coffee that are inevitably spilt. Put the tools you use at the stove…by the stove and don’t worry about getting hung up if they’re not with your other utensils & tools. It’s okay if your glasses are near the fridge and your plates aren’t right next to them. The plates and bowls might work best where you plate the food or serve the food. Think about how your family actually uses the kitchen.
Other things that work well for us, ziplock drawers, storing all of our sharp things in a door like knives in a similar units as Gypsy listed, kitchen sheers, graters.
Items you just aren’t sure about, I’d keep in a box. If you don’t go for them within a certain amount of time, donate. If you do need something, what were you making when you needed it? Where in the kitchen were you working? See if a storage spot makes sense in the moment. We do have a plastic bin of items/tools that just don’t fit either physically or categorically anywhere else in the kitchen. Most of them are in frequently used, but we definitely want them.
I wish I lived closer I’d come help!
I do not like much on the counter so our appliances are stored under the counter, save for the heaving Kitchen Aid. We have tons of rev-a-shelf and recommend it highly. Our small appliances live in the corner cabinet lazy-Susan cabinet and that works really well for us.

I have this giant lazy Susan (https://www.containerstore.com/s/kitchen/pantry-organizers/the-home-edit-large-divided-lazy-susan/12d?productId=11011327&country=US¤cy=USD&cid=cse%7CSSC%7CGoogle%7CTCSP_X_US_EN_Kitchen_SSC_X_15234686054_130419319100_pla-1462800031828_en%7C&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=pla&adpos=&scid=scplp10079224&sc_intid=10079224&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6K_K6KKV-QIVUsLCBB1TNQhBEAQYAyABEgIGVPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) under my kitchen sink and love it. I resisted the trend for a good while but for me this is so much easier than doing the stacking drawer sort of storage under there.
edit- holy cow that link is 🤪 it is the home edit large divided one if you search for it

So, yes, your beagle could open it! But, I have to say, I would not be without these. This is the second kitchen in which I've installed them. When your hands are covered with meat or chicken juice, it's so nice to touch the trash drawer with your toe and it opens automatically for you!

I thought a lot before I put anything away in my new kitchen. It makes it so much easier when you organize it in a way that works for you.
I have baking spices, flour, mixing bowls and mixer in cabinets on one side of my kitchen, and cooking herbs/spices, pots, pans and knives on the other. It just makes it easier for me to group it that way.
I have a roomy drawer where I keep Rubbermaid containers, and two shallow drawers under the stove where I keep cookie trays and baking pans. I have a coffee/tea area on the counter with cups, tea bags etc. in the cabinet above it, and I keep water glasses near the refrigerator where we get water from.
Wine, alcohol and wine/drink glasses are all in the same area as well.

I love these Expandable Drawer Dividers to section off your drawer and not have to jenga in a bunch of smaller containers. I'm also a big fan of bins to house like things (small baking ingredients in one, pastas in one, rice/quinoa/couscous in another, etc.). The Container Store has a ton of options depending on style preference/price point.
