Super random question, but my mom and I were talking about how every store we go to has signs up seeking employees. The Dollarish Tree, restaurants, Fred Meyer, Starbucks, etc. Several restaurants don't have their lobbies open because they don't have enough employees and they are offering 16.00 an hour. Trader Joe's on the other hand consistently has all their check out stands manned, 2 people at the CS counter and employees all over the floor. We have 3 Trader Joe's we frequent between the 2 of us and it is startling the difference. What do they offer that other places don't? You always hear about how great Starbucks is to work for, but what about TJ's? What are they doing right?

Whatever they are doing, other companies should be trying to implement as well.

The employees there also seem to enjoy their jobs and a especially helpful and nice and go out of their way to be helpful.

I don’t recall specifics, but they pay well, have great benefits, and treat employees well.

They treat their employees well and they pay well. It's really that simple. Costco is another store where you never see a "we're hiring" signs because they pay and treat employees well and don't have a problem filling vacancies.

It’s always the same people I see when I go there, though they may be doing different jobs. I like the vibe I get there— the employees seem to genuinely like their jobs and working together. There’s a sense of community in the store.

I know a couple who work for Costco. They legitimately like their jobs and can support their family of 4 kids working there.

Just this week the workers at a Trader Joe's location voted to unionize. I think they have the same issues other employers do, they are just helped by the fact that they need fewer workers to staff their smaller stores. Some entertaining reading here www.reddit.com/r/tjcrew/

I bet they get special secret parking and don’t have to deal with the parking lot like the rest of us. 😄

I'm willing to bet they have more employees on shift at any given time than larger stores. One thing TJ's doesn't have to deal with is specialty positions (no bakery, butcher, etc). Everyone does everything from stocking to bagging to cashier. From a quick look at the Reddit thread that could be one of the issues (employees wanting more to work wine and train were mentioned). I bet they get special secret parking and don’t have to deal with the parking lot like the rest of us. 😄 There is only one TJ's I have been to that is in a newer location with good parking (Redding CA for anyone curious).

There’s a waiting list for interested pharmacists and chefs. They have a great college scholarship program to for kids

The one up the road in Williamsburg--I swear that lot was designed by a sociopath. 😄

I bet they get special secret parking and don’t have to deal with the parking lot like the rest of us. 😄 The TJ I mostly go to has a small lot in back of the store where the employees park. The general parking lot is fairly big. The aisle and parking spots are wide. There are two ways to get in the lot, so traffic flows. The only issue is when someone is waiting for the spots right in front of the store. Then traffic backs up because of the car waiting in the traffic lane for the other car to exit the spot. I go to this TJs because the parking is easy. The other TJs is actually closer to me, but the parking lot is small, only three aisles, and only one way in and out. It also shares the lot with a couple of smaller shops. I don’t know where the employees park, definitely not in the main lot.

A friend's daughter started working at Trader Joe's during college. Friend paid $70k a year in tuition, books, etc for four years. After daughter graduated, daughter chose to continue working at TJs. Nearly$300k spent for college and living in a high cost city, daughter still enjoys working there. Says a lot about the company.

They treat their employees well and they pay well. My daughter worked at TJs for a year during the height of the pandemic, and they were a great place to work, paid well, had a great employee discount (esp during the pandemic), and she loved her managers

We are a drive-thru store and there can be ten people working at once. My son has been employed there for over a year and they treat their employees very well. He loves his job, and it shows by how many employees work there!

Mine has signs that they are hiring. Mine does too. But I will say that the people working there have been there forever. Years and years. They’re doing something right for that kind of retention.

My boyfriend’s daughter works there. She’s 17 and loves it. They work with her school and sports schedule. Four hour shifts doing carts and shelves. Once she’s 18, she will have 6 hour shifts and can do cashier. They give less hours during their sport season and balance it out with giving more when it’s the off season. She is paid very well and loves atmosphere.
