We have owned 2 weeks through Marriott Vacation Club for over 15 years and have enjoyed it. However, now the kids are leaving the nest and we just don’t need it any more.
We know we may be stuck with this purchase, but I am wondering if anyone knows of any way that is on the up and up to legally sell the weeks. Dave Ramsey used to endorse a company to help do this but it is no longer in business.
We are not looking to make any money, just don’t want to pay the maintenance fees for something we are outgrowing.
Any hope?

If you find out, let me know. We’ve been stuck with one for years. We get those ads, but you have to pay a fee upfront, so we haven’t done it. Like you, we don’t want to make any money off of selling it, just want to stop paying that annual fee.

I own with Hilton and I know they have a Facebook group for resale. Maybe check for one for your timeshare? On the Hilton pages, Judi Kozlowski is frequently mentioned with great reviews for resale. I believe she does all brands. www.timeshareprofessionals.com/You won’t get much compared to your original purchase price, but if it’s paid off you should be able to sell it. If I were buying resale, I would reach out to Judi. We still use the heck out of ours, so no desire to sell.

It's really too bad that in the past you'd just lose it if things didn't go the right way. My first husband had a beautiful timeshare left in HIS name from his parents. It was easy because his name was the same as his dad's. Fine. We got to go with our kids only twice. I hear that he goes about a dozen times per year with his 'partner' (I don't know what she is actually, but they've lived together for 8 years now--no engagement, nothing...). Funny how he suddenly has the time and $$ to go with her, but he never "had time" to go away with his kids and me. Whatever........
I "lost" any rights to that timeshare in our divorce. I didn't bother to fight it. I probably should have but I couldn't even afford an attorney at that point.
Gary (DH) also had a timeshare with his ex-wife, in Mexico. As part of their divorce agreement, she was supposed to pay for maintenance and fees and he was supposed to be able to use that timeshare whenever he wanted. Didn't work out that way. She stopped paying the fees on it and it was in arrears within a year, so we were never able to go there. I suggested he bring this up to an attorney and the Court, since he had it in writing. We did go to an attorney, but she really did nothing about it. Turned out she was friends with his ex. Lovely. He didn't have the energy to fight it. I swear, it's what these people count on!!!!!!! So, she eventually paid up on it and still uses it to this day!! Lovely.
I'm glad to hear that it could be settled more easily these days. It seemed like something that was impossible to get out of 20 years ago!!

Yes. My not so lovely DH bought 2 timeshares, one without my knowledge but yes he was finally able to sell both of them many years ago through a sellers agency. He took a loss but was already in the hole with them as we were never able to use them because our allowed time never aligned with ours. The maintenance fees went up every year to more than it would cost us to take a vacation on our own.

I was going to comment that years ago, Dave Ramsey used to advertise some company that was supposed to be legit... There seem to be many scam companies to "sell your timeshare" but all they do is take your money. Just in the past few days there was a local news story about a company that people paid I think about 5K to do this and the company is gone and all these people paid money that they will never see. There used to be timeshares for sale on eBay supposedly for $1. It's terrible that people have such a hard time trying to sell these.

We did. It was a ski resort in Vermont and we loved the time we spent there but our kids were getting older and we just felt it we had gotten out of it what we wanted. We were very, very lucky and sold it at a time people really wanted to be there and we had 2 offers.
The next year, the resort was bought out by a big corporation and it wasn’t as desirable. Dh and I wipe our brows with relief every time we think of it.
They had a sales office at the resort that negotiated with interested buyers - does yours have anything like that?

I have “sold” two. Both cost me money. One was like $1k(can’t remember why there was a fee) and the other was like $3k. The $3k one was one of those “pay us to get rid of it” companies. Thankfully, we legally got rid of both and now we cringe when we hear the word “timeshare.” Our dues were raising annually in large amounts then we got a special assessment (an extra annual fee worth). When you add in RCI fees and trade fees, the value just wasn’t there for us.

We have ours back and said thank you and no more. We didn’t have to pay anything either. We still have banked weeks with Ii.

I was able to give mine back. My ex husband and I had bought it as young, stupid kids on a Mexican vacation. We did use it, but the maintenance fees were a lot. We got divorced and I used it now and then, but we weren't going to the places it was located so I called to see about getting rid of it. My ex had passed away and I mentioned that, and the guy said, oh, then we will take it back. I feel lucky.

Just be careful about places trying to help you sell it. My MIL and FIL were ripped off for tens of thousands of dollars because they kept being told things like “the facility needed repairs and if the chipped in $X it would help make it easier to sell”.

I didn't realise that it could be difficult to get out of a time share. My in-laws had one and they have just cancelled out of it, because they are in their mid 70s and no longer want to travel overseas. They still have 5 weeks that they can use, so they are giving one week each to DSO and his siblings, then using the other two weeks themselves, locally. They had no issues cancelling.

My in-laws had one and they have just cancelled out of it, It is probably a different type of timeshare, but mine is a piece of property, I have to pay property taxes on it. I can't just cancel it. I have to actually sell it somehow and go through escrow too. We can bank our weeks, and stay elsewhere around the world, but it is the annual maintenance fees that I hate. It keeps going up and up every year. We can stay somewhere nice for the fees we now pay. ETA - Some places include the property tax in the maintenance fees. Ours doesn't so we get an actual bill from the county.

We sold our Disney timeshare 2 years ago. We got tired of going there so we listed it with a reseller who handled everything. We weren’t in a rush so we held out to get the price that we wanted which took about 2 months. We did a little better than break even after all the fees which is all we were looking to do.

My parents also just "gave" theirs back. No issues. They had three weeks in the Bahamas and they were assessed a huge fee from hurricane damage. They were in their early 80's and ready to stop going, so it worked out well.

A friend of mine here in Canada had to hire a lawyer to get out of her timeshare agreement. The maintenance fees were going to be the responsibility of her kids upon her death! Such a scam and apparently you can’t always just walk away from ownership.
