The 8:30 start time for all schools seemed OK - I didn't think it would impact me very much, or so I thought. Before, the schools had staggered start times: 7:50 for high school, 8:10 for middle school, and 8:30 for elementary. Made sense, in case you had kids at more than one school. Now, all the schools start at 8:30. I always took my daughter early to avoid all the traffic. Now, it seems that everyone is dropping off their high schooler early. My 'drop off' commute used to take 15 minutes, 20 minutes max, and now I'm at 35 minutes. It really cuts into my relax time before I log on to work.
So, I'm not loving the new start time (but I'm sure the lack of a staggered start is the problem, not necessarily the new start time). How is everyone else doing?

We just moved out of CA. But the school our kids went to didn't switch to 8:30 and I have friends in other districts that still have other start times (9am).
Our new school is a K-8 and we are supposed to drop all kids in the family off at the earliest start time for the family and pick up at the latest pick up. My 6th grader technically starts at 7:45, but they have been encouraging them to get there closer to 7:30 and she doesn't get out till 3:15. It makes my 1st grader's day really long.
Our county (possibly all of CO, but I am not sure) will move to a later start time and a standardized school day length across the county next year. Our kids have at least 30+ more minutes a day than some of the other schools around us. 7:45 is way too early for me! We had a hard enough time with 8:25 last year. So I will be thrilled if it moves later. Last year I could get up and work out before taking the kids, but I am not bumping to 5am to be able to do that! Also, this new school doesn't have hot lunch. So after 2+ years of not having to pack lunch, I am now helping kids with 4 lunches in the morning.

My son is going to high school for the first time since the pandemic. We live across from elementary/jr high school and walked there and back so this school drop off thing is a shock to my system!!! If we leave at 8:05 it takes 45 minutes to go 3 miles and he's late. We have to be out the door by 8:00 at the latest so he can be there on time and it still takes 20-25 minutes! I don't mind driving in the traffic, but my DH took him to school one day and was freaking out about how bad it was, I guess he thought I was exaggerating haha.

My kids are now 22 and 25. However, we had the staggered start times with high school starting at 7:30 and elementary not starting until 9 for some of their K-12 years.
I can't imagine trying to get all the kids to school at the same time for parents plus the traffic for staff/everyone else. I thought they staggered it for busing (although my kids didn't have busing offered).

Your district has chosen to do this.
"Under the new law, high schools are banned from starting the day before 8:30 a.m. Middle schools are banned from starting before 8 a.m."
Districts can have different start times for schools as long as they don't start earlier than the times for middle schools and for high schools. In San Diego Unified, high schools will start at different times between 8:35and 9:05 AM.

Our district hs starts at 8:30, traffic for drop off starts around 8. Middle school starts at 8:10, but traffic on the main street starts around 745. Elementary starts at 8:20 / 8am kinder, but if parents want to park and walk in they need to get there at least 10-15 minutes earlier for parking. Traffic and bad drivers are big issues at all three schools. Parents doing multiple drop offs have to time it almost to the minute, as getting caught at a signal (or the student in front of you isn’t ready to exit car) can make you late. My kids used to always want to be the first to be dropped off. We used to start hs at 8, get out at 3. Now its 830-330, and while I appreciate the extra half hour in the morning, the later end time makes it more difficult for sports.

Nope, LOVE it!
I wish it was the set time for dd's freshman and sophomore years. And half of Jr year. Senior year our district implemented it 2 years before the deadline and we saw lots of improvement.
Today is late start day so ds went at 9:15. Rest if the week is 8:30.
Our morning are so much more relaxed. Ds can take his time, stim, eat, play, chill.
I notice the kids who arrive are more energetic and happy. No more 7:30am walking teen zombies.

In my little part of So.Cal., the schools near me are still staggered. Elementary starts at 8, Middle school at 9 (Monday at 10), High School 8:30 (Period 0 is at 7:10).

I’m not in California but our schools are staggered, but younger kids start earlier then middle and high school. That seems to make more sense with sleep and work routines, etc. I wonder why your schools didn’t do that? Staggered start times also makes traffic better (although our school offers busing for all who want it, no matter of distance from the school). There are still a lot of people who bring their kids to school and it can be a nightmare.

I think it is a good idea.. I had a kid who had a 2 hour commute to a private school, and I had to drop her at the train at 7 am sharp. picked her up at 5 pm. that was a tough 4 yrs. the other kids started at local public schools at 8:15 am and 8:30 am. not too bad.

That would be a drag trying to get kids to school all at the same time. We have staggered times at our school district. The main reason was to save on buses as they could have the buses pick up the high schoolers for a 7:30 start time, then go back and do the elementary kids for a 9:00 start time, leaving middle with the middle time start of 8:15. However, several years back, they decided with high schoolers participating in sports and other extracurricular activities, often taking up quite of bit of evening time, leaving little time for homework, they would change the start times around so that high schoolers had the later start time. I believe elementary is 7:45, (gives a parent time to drop off and get to work) middle is 8:15 and highschool is 8:45. They had some kids speak of the later time on the local news the other day and they said they were thrilled with the later start time.

Hate it. I don’t mind the start time, but obviously impacts the end time. DS now gets out at 3:17 and by the time he gets to the car and we drive home and drop off the boy we carpool with, it’s 3:50 at the earliest. He has sports 4 nights a week and we leave at 5:15. He literally has 10 minutes of down time because we are rushing for snack and homework.

From what I have seen is that a lot of kids take zero period to get out early. My neighbor's son is changing is scheduled so that he gets out at lunch. So at least at our HS there are ways for the kids to manipulate their schedule way more than I was able to at that age. We have 4 HSs in our district and they each decide their own bell schedules, same with the 4 intermediate schools and the 20+ elementary schools.

Same start time for all schools seems like it would cause a problem for bussing and families that have kids in different schools. Here, Jr High starts at 7:40, High School at 7:50, Intermediate school at 8:00 and Elementary schools later. 8:30 maybe. Grades 6-12 all ride the bus together and get dropped off in order of start time.
I do like an 8:30 or later start time for high school students though.

I forgot to add that elementary starts at 8am, high school at 8:30am and middle school at 8:45am. High school is the only one that changed.

How do they work the buses with everyone on the same schedule? That is a large part of the reason that we have staggered starts here

It says high school can't start before 7:30, and middle no earlier than 8. I do think our high school has an optional zero period, and that does start at 7:30 - but not too many kids do that.

Ours are still staggered here. Elementary starts at 850, middle at 8 and high school at 830. It makes traffic a mess much longer and I’m not a fan. I can’t imagine them all starting at the same time.
I have heard it’s almost impossible to get bus service this year. Not sure if it exists but parents that used to have if no longer do and are very unhappy with that and times.

It turns out elementary and high school are on the same schedule (start at 8:30), and the middle schools start at 8. So, it's not everyone. But this city is only 12 miles (like 4 miles long and 3 miles wide) and has 19 schools, and 120,000 residents. It's a lot. I wonder if the schools will eventually change to being staggered. I think i'm extra aggravated because they are working on the roads by my house and the main road going to the high school. I guess this is what I get for living in a dense city.

Do they not have busing or are they all together on the bus? Or do you have that many buses for all the kids? Our town uses the same buses for elementary school and the high school (we don’t have a separate middle school) HS starts at 7:25 kids get dropped off by bus at 7, then they head back and pick up the little kids for 8:05 start. Our high school is in another town. Now the town next to ours that is in a different district has all 3 levels on the same property but the kids don’t come at the same time.

Lot of kids in my area do not take a bus to school. You have to live more than 2 miles away from the school. Also, there are no buses to the high schools in this school district. There are school buses for kids with special needs too.
Growing up, there were empty metro buses that were used to pick up the junior high kids. They would wait outside school, pick up kids (who still had to pay the normal fare), then go along their normal routes. In high school, we didn’t even have that. We all jammed up at a bus stop, and some buses would not stop for us. 🤬

"Under the new law, high schools are banned from starting the day before 8:30 a.m. Middle schools are banned from starting before 8 a.m." When my kids were in middle/high school they were in sports and other activities. During the fall/start of school, they were always at XC practice at 6 a.m. Being at school by 7 am was not unusual throughout the year. I know how tired kids are and how wild hormones can be. But I still think they can learn to go to bed. Shut off the devices and no screen time so they can go to sleep. They need to learn how to manage time and get enough sleep. It's not perfect. I know those growing bodies and minds need rest. I am so glad I did not have to deal with a lot of traffic and drop off lines to deal with. I can't imagine. My kids always got on the bus (from Kindergarten till they could drive their freshman year) before 7 am.

There have been recent studies though that say teens tend to have “night owl” tendencies, and they have different sleep patterns than adults. They get tired later in the evening and it takes them longer to get going in the mornings. I think that is why there has been this push to start school later. I wish we had started school after 8. 😁

It bugs me that one district does something weird like get rid of staggered start times and then parents blame it on the new state law!
The whole point of the law was to recognize that teenagers have different sleep patterns than adults and also different than younger kids.

Our school district only buses a very limited number of students- mainly special Ed but even that has been more limited in recent years and they have gone to having as many services as possible at the local elem school vs bussing to a few specific schools.

When I was in jr high, school started at 8 AM. First bell was at 7:55 meaning we could go inside. Starting around 7:30 AM, there were teachers there on duty, either in the courtyard or in the gym in case of bad weather. My Mom would actually drop me off at the gas station across the street around 6:45 AM and I would sit inside until about 7:30. The employees didn't mind. I would buy breakfast and sit there and read/due homework. There was usually a group of about 5 of us any given day.
