Some of you may recall that I posted about my sister’s cancer that was detected in June 2020. She was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cancer that was discovered when she started having vision problems that were caused by a tumor in her eye. The cancer started in her kidneys and spread to her eye, brain, lungs, liver, and bones (shoulder, spine, and hip). Her diagnosis was grim, but the silver lining of hope was a new immunotherapy that showed so much promise that trials had ended early.
They zapped the most critical areas with radiation first (eye, kidney, and one area of the bone cancer). Then they started the immunotherapy. It was often a “2steps forward, 1 step back” situation as she was hospitalized with COVID for a while, and she developed some issues with with her stomach that required a feeding tube twice.
But, her most recent body scans showed her to be cancer free except for a small spot on her kidney! She had another dose of radiation on that spot Wednesday, and her doctor is confident that is the last radiation she will need. She will still be on immunotherapy for the rest of her life, but her life will be normal.
There were a LOT of happy tears in my family this week!

What wonderful news! Medical science is amazing. 🥰 You got that right! She was initially told she had about 6 months without treatment or maybe a little over a year with traditional chemo or radiation. Immunotherapy was a game-changer! Her treatments were only tested on certain types of cancer and haven’t been proven effective on all of those. However, as I understand it, what they learned from the failures still gives them a starting point to develop treatment for other types of cancer.

Wow! I am beyond thrilled for her. Way to kick cancer's ass.
She has been on a very rough ride for the last 2 years, I wish her peace and continued good health as she navigates her new life path.
Speaking of a new life path, it's likely something she has not thought about quite yet. It can be a confusing time because she has devoted so much time and energy to getting thru her ordeal that she hasn't had a chance to consider how her life has changed and what that means going forward. Many find themselves needing therapy to help them understand this change.
Science is the coolest thing! I was saved from stage 4 cancer with antibody therapy. A big thank you to those who work so hard to find and develop these therapies.

A big thank you to those who work so hard to find and develop these therapies. She has an amazing treatment team! There are three doctors who handled the cancer treatments and related complications. She also had a nutritionist, and a therapist is involved as well. They really took the “whole body” approach to her treatments. She was on disability until she reached the point she could take retirement. She has been taking on some hobbies, and she and her husband (retiring next year) plan to do some traveling.

twinsmomfla99 thank you for sharing. This gives me hope that doctors are now looking at all aspects of a cancer diagnosis and not just what treatment will kick cancer's ass! I'm thrilled to hear your sister has a lovely path planned!
