That is the phone call I just received from my realtor. We both got a good laugh out of the way he chose to tell me that everything was final and the house was no longer mine.
He said to check with my bank tonight to see if the money has been transferred into my account and to let him know. It might not happen until Monday when the bank opens but it is a done deal and there is no chance of anything going wrong now. I am not leaving my hotel room for the next two days so I won't be anywhere to spend any money anyway.
I do have a list of things that I have been compiling that I will be purchasing over the next couple of months. The very first purchase will be replacement hearing aids. One of them stopped working and I cannot find the remote to access all the functions for the other one. I think the movers packed it. They are older anyway and I'm sure technology has improved over the past 8 years since I bought that pair.
I ended up paying around $135,000 since January in repairs and updates to the house from the plumbing leak, mold mitigation, garage door spring breaking, new PEX plumbing, termite issues, shower pan failing and requiring the new master bath shower, etc. Expenses just kept coming at me and everything seemed to cost between $10,000 and $15,000. But it was all necessary to either fix something that was wrong or improve the looks of something as was the case with the new flooring and carpeting and painting.
But now that is all over!! No more "We need another $10,000 for this issue." And I get to remain in the house for 29 days without a rental fee. I don't plan to be there that long. I just have two more rooms to finish packing up and I will be gone!
It has been a good and safe house to live in and I am taking some wonderful memories from the last 44 years with me. I hope the new family enjoys it as much as I have. And they basically have a new house since I just replaced a lot of stuff in it! I am happy that they loved the items we chose when redoing the walls and floors. They said they will be updating the kitchen (I am leaving the replacement stove, microwave, and oven that we didn't get time to install in the garage for them. I told my realtor to just have them donate them to Habitat if they don't end up using them) They wanted to know if I had any extra flooring they could have because they love what I chose and may need it when they redo the kitchen. That made me feel good. Not that they liked my choice of flooring but that it wasn't money wasted. There is always the possibility that you spend money updating something in a house that the new buyers hate and rip out immediately. I told my neighbors that if the new people moved in and immediately began ripping things out that I didn't want to know about it! I tried to make sure my choices were as generic and adaptable as possible. Fortunately they loved the flooring. And the paint my realtor recommended compliments it nicely too.
So, I'm homeless!
