Do you remember him? He was serving a life sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999. The podcast Serial covered his case.
Wow, he’s been in jail a long time. Prosecutors found that some of the significant evidence against him was unreliable, that there are two possible alternative suspects, and evidence was never turned over to the defense. They recommended his case be vacated.
Update 10/11/22: According to CNN, the prosecution is dropping all charges. I wonder if anyone is going to investigate the two alternative suspects?

I just saw that he was released without bail and that prosecutors said that they were waiting for DNA tests to decide on a new trial or not. But, weren't they also the ones that were petitioning to the court to have him released based on the previous trial being flawed?

His story was one of the very first podcasts I listened to. The evidenced and research provided there certainly made me think he wasn’t guilty.

He was housed not to far from my home. I was obsessed with his case after learning about it in my Criminology class.
Thrilled that he is no longer in prison! Will be interested in how this plays out.

That was one of the few podcasts I have listened to. I really couldn’t tell if he was guilty or not but I definitely felt that the investigation was flawed and not thorough enough.

My students were thrilled. I can't say "oh obviously he is innocent," but I also don't see how anyone can be confident he is guilty, and we're not supposed to put people in prison when we don't have that confidence.
Twenty-three years is a long time.

I know I know …first world problem. And I think it is your phone that probably screwed up the name. But could you please change your title to reflect the name correctly please. I believe it is Adnan Syed.

I believe it is Adnan Syed. I didn’t even notice - thank you for catching that. Either fat thumbs or an autocorrect. ETA My phone really wanted to correct it that way again. I finally got it spelled right.

Twenty-three years is a long time. I completely agree with you. There were so many problems with the evidence, with his defense, and with the prosecution.

That was one of the few podcasts I have listened to. I really couldn’t tell if he was guilty or not but I definitely felt that the investigation was flawed and not thorough enough. this is exactly how I feel. There was another podcast too - Disclosed? I have to look it up - that was a lot more detailed than Serial, and I needed to move on from the case, LOL, so I am not sure I finished.

Undisclosed is the name of the other podcast, it gives a more in-depth look at everything. I’m really glad he is out and it makes me sick that the real killer is still out there. They had 2 alternative suspects that were never looked at.

ETA: They dropped the charges because new DNA testing of evidence excluded him. To me, it seems that confirms his innocence.

I mean, I would hope they would look at the other suspects but I also wouldn't be shocked if they figured someone served 20 yrs already for the crime so leave it be. UGH I wonder if the DNA sample incriminates someone else!

Twenty-three years is such a long time, as I said upthread. I know how deeply this affected him and his family. It is also awful for Hae Min Lee's family that they thought they had an answer, and the answer was wrong. I hope everyone is able to find peace and healing.
