Do they think it is too late to go back in with some suggestions and ask for input from the boss? They need to start out by saying that they value working there and are looking for ways to make a specific component of the job less stressful. And is that even a possibility? Do they need more time to get it done? Do they want additional people assigned to the task? Do they want to work reduced hours and if so, who will handle the remainder of the job while they are not there? Could they hire worker a temp to help out during the busy season? Is there an option for overtime pay for working more hours to get the job done in time? They need to decide what will make them happy and then pose that to the boss. But they also need to be realistic about what they are asking for, especially with the way this started out. How would it be satisfactorily resolved to your friend?
You said it is their busy time of year and maybe that is just the way it is with no solution. If there is a specific aspect to the job that is causing all this stress, the employee needs to ask themselves how it could be done differently and ask if that is even an option. They cannot just state it is too hard on them without offering anything more and expect the boss to know what is on their mind. Offer to work though some solutions with them before they go back in to see their boss again.
