Looking to book a cottage on a lake in Manitoba. Would like to spend a few days in Winnipeg (never been there) and then about 11 days in a cottage on a lake? Does anyone have any type of recommendations for me? What lake, river, beach to stay on? TIA.

I'll say up front, I have never been there. And not really interested in going. I have a sister in law that lives in Winnipeg & is trying to move back to Ontario. She has nothing good to say about it. Lots of drugs, lots of crime. Now, she is also a little crazy (we're happy she doesn't live close, lets put it that way) so take it for what you will LOL
I'm sure it's like most places, good & bad everywhere. Just be aware when you're there

My dad is in Winnipeg right now. We had a cottage on Lake Winnipeg and I highly discourage you from going there. Flies, fish flies, mosquitoes and poison ivy. Grand Beach might be better.

Sorry to be another Canadian to say that Manitoba is not my destination of choice ... freezing in the winter and full of bugs in the summer ... why do you want to go there? I will admit that I have never been to Winnipeg but I also have never heard anything positive about the place. Come to Calgary!

Seriously or I will meet you in Victoria which is called Lotusland. It really is the best!

oh I was in Victoria in August on a cruise stop - it's gorgeous there! Definitely need to go back again
Calgary is nice for a larger city, but head west to the national parks. Banff is amazing!!!
northern Ontario I hear is nice too, haven't made it that far north yet. But I think bugs are a huge issue there too in summer
and definitely do not go to Manitoba in the winter. It's called Winterpeg for a reason - crazy cold & snow!

Oh dear, another Canadian checking in to ask why and what time of year are you planning to go? Winters are frigid and summers thick with every fly you can imagine. I know several people from Winnipeg that migrated to BC as young adults, married/partnered up and never returned. Most were only able to convince their partner to visit with them once. The stories they tell were about running from the cabin screened porch, covered in bug repellent, to the lake and hoping not to get carried off by a human sized mosquito. The only place in Manitoba that interests me is Churchill for a polar bear tour.

I thought I wanted to go there but maybe not. I know nothing about it. Moved to Minneapolis 3 years ago from the east coast. We love Canada and thought we wanted to go there since it's not that far away on a road trip. We want a driving trip. Calgary is too far. And so is Victoria. Any other ideas?

My DH's sister and family live in Winnipeg. We have been several times. It is lovely in the summer. We have rented a cottage on Lake Gimli. It was beautiful. The mosquito's can be bad but they do spray for them so if you are not too early in the season you should be fine.
The Forks is a great place of restaurants and shopping and usually tons of festivals going on. They have a great children's museum and the Museum of Human rights is great too. We stay with family when there but have never felt unsafe or scared there. We haven't been since 2019 but I wouldn't hesitate to go again

The City of Winnipeg is not a nice city. I have relatives there and have traveled there for over 60 years. Not much has changed but the crime is horrible. A lot of homeless people. They just shut down The Bay, that was a historical building. There are some great museums that are wonderful to go to. Bring along the best bug spray and be prepared as for the mosquito's to have a full flight crew on board.

Another Canadian checking in to say I’d pass on Manitoba 😬😬 Same. I haven't been personally but nobody I know wants to go there. Ever. You also have to have a certain amount of tolerance for "everything wants to eat me" that goes with lakeside living, regardless of which Canadian lake you head for. Mosquito netting is a must for sleeping.

I will give a very enthusiastic 2 thumbs up for Churchill, Manitoba, which is the perfect place to see polar bears, beluga whales and the northern lights all on one trip. However there are no roads into Churchill, so it’s probably not the best destination for a road trip.

Another Canadian who says Nooooope to Manitoba any time of the year.
Save up and go way went or way east for a better trip. I agree with lots of people that Calgary and the Rockies specifically are a definite must. Victoria is lovely - so is the island on a whole.
Go east and travel the maritime provinces.
The middle...eh. I lived in Quebec for several years, and as much as it's hot and humid in the summer, there are some nice places to visit. I just don't want to live there anymore!

I saw a movie a million years ago and it had an old women from Manitoba in it that bad been a beauty queen. She was living in the US and her young male neighbor was a song writer. He wrote her a song with the line, Miss Manitoba, so you miss Manitoba? It was a catchy enough song that I remember it all these years later.

Another Canadian chiming in…Was in Winnipeg and Brandon Manitoba for an Aboriginal conference in 1995, first and last time in Manitoba. Toured around the province a bit over the few days we were there. Not somewhere I ever wanted or needed to return too. I’d pick somewhere else to be honest.
There’s a reason why there’s a “going to Winnipeg” commercial 😂 I’d link it if I could but it’s not working. I think every Canadian has used the “going to Winnipeg” quote 🤪

I'm from Manitoba - just outside of Winnipeg actually and lived in Winnipeg most of my life. While we aren't a glamourous city by any means, it's not as bad here as I feel people are making it out to be. It is a good distance from Minnesota for a road trip and there are many cultural festivals and events happening in the summer.
I would maybe recommend Clear Lake as a destination. Gimli is a great little town but the water isn't amazing there.
Yes we have mosquitos but they are worse at night and mostly for short periods. You can absolutely spend time outdoors during the day with no issue. We have crime here yes, but it's not an overly dangerous place to be in general.

I passed through Winnipeg a few decades ago when I was backpacking across Canada. I remember being handed a can of bug spray when I checked into the hostel. Apparently, the Red River had flooded the week prior and, as a result, the mosquito population had boomed by an estimated 900% that week. Other than that, I actually had a good time. They had a really great natural history museum - I do remember that.

I took your advice. Thank you!!! We are going to a beautiful place in Ontario on Longbow Lake. Very modern house right on the water. Air conditioning, tv, water view. That's what I need. There's a cute town nearby with a beautiful museum. Very excited.

If you are looking for great lakes, I'd head to Saskatchewan. When we moved to Alberta, I was disappointed in the lakes here--the mountains are fine and the mountain lakes are freaking cold, but the lakes in the rest of the province are mostly yucky, water-wise. Saskatchewan has everything from Lake Diefenbaker in the south (made by damming the river, it's huge! Surrounded by prairie and minimal development considering the size of the lake) to Waskesiu in the north-ish (actually only halfway up the province, but the whole top part is forest without many roads--not what people expect of SK). Saskatoon is a really pretty city with lots to do. Regina less so, but still has some good parts, and it's very close to Moose Jaw which has a great tourist industry with their tunnels and mineral spa. My only experience with Ontario lakes was that I was disappointed in the swimmability of them compared to the ones I grew up with in SK ...

My parents are from Winnipeg so I spent a lot of time there. While I don’t find the city exciting you could find a few things to pass a few days. A few years ago, dh and I went through the new human rights museum. It is close to the forks, I think, which we couldn’t walk through because it was frigid out. The museum was beautiful. Unfortunately a lot of the displays were replicas of originals, say in Washington or bigger cities.
My parents grew up going to gimli. I don’t love the bugs. The mosquitos are quite big and the fish flies are yucky. But if it’s a minor bug year due to weather it’s nice. We lived in Alberta for 10 years and didn’t love the lakes there. We have been back home in BC for 13 years and the lakes in the interior are lovely. But there are mosquitoes too. Not as bad as Alberta or Manitoba but still there are some. I think anytime you’re near standing water you get mosquitoes.

i am glad you found someplace to book, and northwestern ontario (kenora) was going to be my suggestion for a not-too far destination since after this feedback you would be crazy to go to MB. lol!
a little surprised to see many negatives about the province (and quite a few from those who admit they have never been)... i lived in both winnipeg and a small town of about 2000 people about 30 mins outside of winnipeg.
summers are beautiful, there is nothing like a sunny summer day driving in the prairies with not a cloud to be seen a gorgeous sunflower or flax fields as far as you can see. small towns have lots of fairs and events that people from all around look forward to all year. people are friendly. yes, there are mosquitos, go to cottage country in ontario, quebec, anywhere else and there are mosquitos too.
hope your trip is all you are looking for!!!

I'd suppose it depends on what you're used to. Anyone who's grown up in one of the big cities (Toronto, Montréal, Victoria, Ottawa, etc.) is likely going to have different expectations on amenities vs. more rural living. I had both as a child; big city home and backwater summers at a lakeside cottage. The nearest town (if you can call one street a town) was a half-hour drive out. Dirt roads, horse flies, deer flies, frogs and fish, leeches, birds, butterflies and bears. Lots and lots of trees, not much else. Electricity and septic plumbing, so not really roughing it, but that was about it for modern comforts. No cellphone service or internet. No garbage pickup, you had to bring your stuff to the closest dump, home, or burn it. It was more common to visit the neighbours by boat than car!
Mosquitos are annoying but the deer/horse flies are the real assholes. Those suckers take a chunk of flesh when they bite!

My uncle (who lived in Winnipeg) had a cottage in Kenora. I went almost every summer growing up to this cottage. Clear lakes, beautiful skies, lovely place. Canadian Walmart is a far cry from the USA stores. Enjoy your time in ONTARIO!

My dd lives in Winnipeg, so we've been there a few time. I don't like it. At all. There are so many wonderful places in Canada to visit and Manitoba isn't one of them!
