I live in the area (thankfully `15 miles away), and this was all over the evening news. The neighborhood is a huge one with hundreds of houses.

The suspect is NOT in custody, but is “contained” according to the mayor.

This is the first official confirmation that there are 5 dead. Sadly.

But after the Parkland shooter was only sentenced to life, why not?

But after the Parkland shooter was only sentenced to life, why not? are you saying that if he'd gotten the death penalty it would have deterred this guy (or future shooters)?

I live just outside of Raleigh and this has the whole area stunned. Like many people, we didn't believe that "this kind of thing" could happen in our hometown. The story is still unfolding, including motive (if any) and the condition of the survivors, including the shooter. It's so hard to wrap one's mind around.

But after the Parkland shooter was only sentenced to life, why not? EXACTLY. This was one of my thoughts when I posted the other thread. Makes me sick. Should have just taken him out.

People make it sound like life in prison is a lifelong vacation. I see that not getting the death penalty is now going to be the new excuse for mass shootings. Anything but looking at the real issues, right?

Anything but looking at the real issues, right? life in prison means you have the honor of still breathing, unlike the dead people. And i don't like guns, and I'm tired of mental health issues being the go to. Of course these pieces of shit are crazy for what they did/do. Did you actually see the parents face of the dead kids? Cruz and this new killer do no deserve the right to keep breathing.

I don’t buy the idea that someone will hear about Cruz getting life in prison and decide that “there are no consequences for shooting someone, so why not?”

I feel for the people of Raleigh and especially that community. I saw a tiktok from a woman who lives in that community. You could hear the sirens in the background. Her neighbor's fiancee was missing and they finally learned that she had been one of the victims. Many in the community were coming home from work when this unfolded so they were blocked from returning home for hours, dealing with fear, uncertainty and confusion. Can you imagine in your family members were at home and you couldn't get to them while all of this was happening?
There's going to be a lot of trauma for many people and certainly loss we can't imagine for the families & friends of the victims. When we talk about mental health regarding shooters and their state, we can't forget the mass trauma of the communities they terrorized and destroyed.

People make it sound like life in prison is a lifelong vacation. Life in prison (in the general population) is living among a community, a way of life. I’m not saying it’s a vacation but it’s doesn’t have to be hell either. Inmates eat, have healthcare, can get a higher education and have a social life/interaction. A person can adapt as they would moving to any new community. Again, just to be extremely clear, I’m not saying it’s a vacation or a great happy positive experience. Don’t we have a person who works in a prison here? Maybe they can chime in. The Parkland killer should be put to death. He doesn’t deserve a life.

I used to be a staunch supporter of the death penalty and still think it was the right thing for Speck, Gacy, and others like that. I’m not so staunch now and feel that spending the rest of life in prison can be worse than being put to death. These crazies may not realize that life as they know it is over as soon as they go behind bars but we have the satisfaction of knowing their life will be hell. However, I have no objection to LE taking out an active shooter.

Giving a mass shooter the death penalty and thinking it would be a deterrent to budding mass shooters has got to be one of the silliest things I’ve heard in a long time.
How many mass shooters have actually make it to a trial? Most either kill themselves or die in a shoot-out with the police.
One would think the low survival rate of mass shooters would be a deterrent to those thinking about doing a mass shooting but it isn’t, they just keep coming.

This is horrible, I had not heard until now. It's true something like this affects the entire community, and it will for years to come. You just aren't the same anymore, you no longer are free from that worry because it/the possibility of it happening again will always lurking in the back of your mind.
I'm so so sorry to hear of this terrible tragedy. Those poor victims and their families.

I really don't get how anyone should be surprised when a mass shooting happens in their community. Guns are everywhere and the general public seems A-Ok with voting for politicians who could care less about regulating those said guns.

From NPR
”The mass shooting in Raleigh, N.C., that killed five people including a police officer was carried out by a 15-year-old who is now in critical condition, officials said on Friday.”
