Anyone know of a good full length hooded lined cloak tutorial? My DD (11) is going as a vampire and asked me to make her one after the one we ordered from Amazon showed up and it feels like a plastic table cloth. She wants a fleece one (hello BLANKET!) but I’d like to make it from panne velvet. I think she’d probably use/wear the fleece one A LOT so I’m fine going either route. But- it must be lined (red in/black out reversible) Anyway… sewing peas… any help?

I made a cape for you grandson but instead of making a hood, I put about a 3-4 inch stand up collar because I didn't want to fuss with a hood.

I don’t love the way she did the hood (detest hand sewing) and wonder if I could sandwich the hood between the layers and sew leaving a hole in the bottom to turn. Trying to wrap my head around that idea. I CAN hand sew but fleece? Ugh!

I’ve made the Folkwear Kinsale cape (it’s my Halloween costume - little red riding hood) and the have it in a child size. The hood is very full though and may not be what she has in mind. It’s also detachable with buttons.

How about a black bonnet with a high collared cape.

The fleece fun one is one I saw earlier. Trying to decide if I can make it 2 layered so it’s reversible.

Then put them right sides together and sew around the outside edge of the whole thing leaving an open space at the bottom. Turn it right sides out and top stitch around the edge turning the raw edge of the open space to the inside. I'd also top stitch the area where the cape and hood come together. Does all that make sense?

The fleece fun one is one I saw earlier. Trying to decide if I can make it 2 layered so it’s reversible. I think it would be incredibly bulky if sewn with 2 layers of fleece. I’d look for a satin or the like for the lining. If you don’t sew, use a proper pattern. It’s more complicated than you may think, especially to add a hood. And it’s going to take a lot of fabric or it’s going to feel skimpy.

You could make the cape part almost like a bag with one colour on either side and with drawcords at the neck. Then use a hoodie to get the hood shape, again one colour either side and hand sew it to the gathered in cape.
I made a lace cape (not double sided) with a monk hood for a bride a lonnnng time ago. These type of hoods need to be clipped to the hair to stop them slipping off when the wearer is walking. Would that be something that might put your daughter off?!?!

Two layers of any fabric is going to be heavy for ankle length..

All the pattern companies will have a pattern for an easy hooded cape in their Halloween collections. I would go buy a cheap pattern for one- it will save you so much time and fabric. Scaling online patterns is annoying If you are using velvet, the proper patterns will give you proper yardage and layout with the nap. New look and simplicity can be $5 on sale here, so I imagine they are cheaper in the US. It's worth your sanity (source: experienced sewer who has last minute made many capes without pattern and always regretted it, but never learned her lesson) Two layers of fleece won't hang well, but you could do fleece (or velvet) and line with a woven red fabric.

I made DD a Traveler's cloak with a hood a couple of years ago. I found a tutorial online with a free downloadable pattern.
Many tutorials just give dimensions and it can be confusing. I liked that I could shorten the pattern before cutting.
Depending on how warm/cold it is you might use fleece instead of lining it.
I will see if I can find the link to the one I used.

Just not great with “clothing” but if I look at this more like a “blanket” I think I can do it pretty easily.

I think a 2 layered crushed velvet would be awesome. I’m going to push that direction I think. I don’t usually see with patterns. Hate them but this I think needs a good pattern.

timely thread as I'm supposed to be cutting out a hooded cloak today myself. DD also wanted two layers of fleece - black with a green lining. After calculating how much 12 yards of fabric would cost (and considering that we live in Florida where it's still in the 80s), we compromised on a black single-layer cloak with a lined hood.
I'm using Simplicity R11579
Years ago I made a red fleece hooded cloak lined with red satin lining fabric for DD22 when she was 8 I think. It lasted through two kids for many years each and I suspect it's still at the back of DD16's closet
I used McCalls 4703
