I’m reading nonfiction, so again, I didn’t finish reading a book this week. I might have to stick to fiction for the rest of the year if im going to make my 75 book goal this year.
What did you read?

I finished one this a.m. Ugh. When We Were Bright and Beautiful by Medoff. I wish I hadn't. I can't give too much detail without spoiling the book, but let's just say this family is a huge, huge mess. The son is on trial for rape. His filthy rich fam all think he's innocent. I felt sorry for the MC (his sister) but didn't like her much. She's privileged and flawed and a brat. 2.5/5 stars.
Target had a BOGO, 50% off, so I bought The Winners and picked it up today. I had gift cards and 5% off and another deal where you get another credit if you place a certain # of orders. I was tired of waiting for it at the library. For my second book, I bought Look Closer by David Ellis. I've heard great things. I rarely buy brand-new books, so this is kind of fun.
It will be a little bit before I get to them as I have books I need to return to the library before they are overdue.
Added: I'm reading a chapter or two a day of Highway of Tears about missing and murdered Indigenous women across rural BC.

I finished CARRIE SOTO IS BACK by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I loved the story and the tennis descriptions. As usual with this author the character descriptions are spot on. I would recommend it.
I’m now listening to HOW TO RAISE AN ADULT by Julie Thycott Haims. It focuses on how not to over-parent. She was also in charge of uni admissions at Stanford. She spoke at our school last week so I decided to try her book. I’m finding her advice wonderful. Worth the read if you have kids, especially if you have teenagers.

I read Back to the Garden by Laurie R. King. She writes a,Sherlock Holmes series I really like, and I've enjoyed some of her other books, too. This one seems like it might be the first in a new series, about a female homicide detective in the Bay Area. She's working on identifying victims of a serial killer from the 1970s and when a skeleton is unearthed at a former commune, she has to find out if the body is another victim of the killer, or if someone else is responsible. The book goes back and forth from present time to the 70s and how the commune came to be and what life was like there. I really enjoyed it. King is excellent at creating a world that you want to step into and walk around in. I found the main character pretty uninteresting, but the world of the book made up for it. Of course, I'm a 70s child. 😊
And I read The Resting Place by Camilla Sten. This is a Swedish mystery about a young woman with prosopagnosia (face blindness), which I've mentioned before because I read another book where that was the premise a couple weeks ago, and apparently there's yet another one floating around out there. Very odd. This young woman witnessed her grandmother's murder, even saw the killer, but can't identify them. Now she's at a remote country house in a snowstorm with her boyfriend, her aunt, and a lawyer to catalog her grandmother's belongings and settle the estate. Creepiness ensues. I thought it was pretty good, better than Rock Paper Scissors, the other prosopagnosia book I read. Many reviewers seem to disagree with me, so your mileage may vary.

A good reading week for me ! WHERE I LEFT HER (‘21) by Amber Garza : 5 STARSDESCRIPTION: Whitney had some misgivings when she dropped her increasingly moody teenage daughter, Amelia, off at Lauren’s house. She’d never met the parents, and usually she’d go in, but Amelia clearly wasn’t going to let something so humiliating happen, so instead Whitney waved to her daughter before pulling away from the little house with the yellow roses in front. But when she goes back the next day, an elderly couple answers the door—Amelia and Lauren aren’t there, and this couple swears they never were, that she’s at the wrong house. As Whitney searches for Amelia, she uncovers a trail of lies her daughter has told her—from the Finsta account to rumors of a secret relationship. Does she really even know this girl she’s raised? Could Whitney’s own demons have something to do with her daughter’s disappearance? REVIEW: New author for me. maryland thought it was good. Writing and story drew me right in. Fast moving plot. Liked how all the pieces of the puzzle are slowly forming the complete picture and WHAT A PICTURE IT WAS! I will say no more. THE HIDING PLACE (‘19) by CJ Tudor : 4 STARSDESCRIPTION: Joe never wanted to come back to Arnhill. After the way things ended with his old gang—the betrayal, the suicide—and what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. But Joe doesn’t have a choice, not after a chilling email surfaces in his inbox: I know what happened to your sister. It’s happening again . . . REVIEW: Previous books The Burning Girls (‘21 - Overall 3 Stars - Creepiness 4 Stars), The Other People (‘20 - 5 Stars) and The Chalkman (2018 - Read ‘20 - 4 Stars). Love the writing. Keeps me intrigued and even laughing at times. Love trying to figure out what happened in the main character’s younger years. At 60% still sooo much unknown about lots of these characters and their pasts. It all comes out and a few things I did not expect. Glad to see the eeriness carried thru to the end.

I listened to “Out Of The Clear Blue Sky”. It might have been recommended here. I really enjoyed it. Told from the perspective of two women - a woman who is stunned when her husband leaves her - and the other woman. Definitely recommend.
I have The German Wife and Going Solo up next.

I finished the audio book A Good Marriage - McCreight and really liked it! Listening to the Marie Kondo book and This is How I Lied - Gudenkauf and like both.
Read The Good Son - Freida McCann (the name is close, can't find the info) and loved it! Now reading Never Lie by the same author (will have to post it later, my kindle isn't nearby).

I read Saving Meghan by DJ Palmer. It was very interesting at the beginning, but at the end got a little too unbelievable.

I finally got through "The Winners" on audiobook. I'd give it a 3, Fredrik Backman isn't my style.
Presently 80% through "The Turn of the Key" by Ruth Ware. I'm enjoying this book and will probably finish tonight.
My next 2 books will be The "Thursday Night Murder Club" and "The Bullet that Missed" both by Richard Osman.

Forever Home by Graham Norton (a UK talk show host) This is set in a small town in Ireland and is a mix of family drama & dark comedy with a bit of cozy mystery thrown in. Most of it is improbable, but it's still an engaging read. I like the way he writes, and I can overlook the obvious plot holes and just enjoy the story. 4 stars
Dirt Town by Hayley Scrivenor. This is a debut novel by an Australian author, set in a small town in rural Australia and follows the female police officer investigating the disappearance of a 12yo girl on her way home from school. I thought it was a well done & believable mystery and it kept me guessing until the end. 4 stars
One of the Girls by Lucy Clarke Well, that blurb is accurate about the 'end' part - I am currently 90% through the book, and there hasn't been a murder yet! So the murder is literally at the end of the book (and I have zero clue who it's going to be). This has really good reviews on GR and there's lots of descriptions of the scenery, the ocean, the sand, the drinking, and in particular Greek food, but for 80% of the book nothing happens and it's all background information about the 5 women on this trip. At this point I'm bored and I doubt I'll rate it any higher than 3 stars but when I finish it in a few hour's time...I'll come and update if the ending was spectacular.

Love the baseball playoff season, where I just sit on the couch listening to the game and reading. Though this past Saturday was rough, within two hours, both of my teams were knocked out.
Recent reads:
Breaking Bread with the Dead by Alan Jacobs. This book, read a bit at a time whilst brushing my teeth, was the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club book for September. I guess I always assumed that reading classics, even if they are not current in sensibilities, was a reflexive desire for readers. I wholeheartedly believe that we should read widely and that we should not only read European and White Upper-Class classics, but don’t believe that we should eschew the above either. Reading widely enhances us all. 3/5 stars.
The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict. This was an interesting historical fiction about JP Morgan’s personal librarian, who was passing as white. Interesting history – it is a good point as to the way that passing would wear on your soul. 3/5 stars.
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. I often feel that I have a curmudgeonly, Grinch-like book review approach, but this one grew my cold, dead heart three sizes. Sweet and charming. 4/5 stars.
Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart. This book has a kicky cover and title and is based in historical facts, though I felt that it dragged a lot – it easily could have been 100 pages shorter. Having said that, there were some laugh-out-loud scenes and lines. 3/5 stars.
Miracles by CS Lewis. Read a bit at a time, this book is clearly a brilliant theologian wrestling with the hard questions. Watching this match, though, is a bit boring. 3/5 stars
Agatha of Little Neon by Clair Luchette. Obliquely wrestling with some of the institutional issues of the church, the chatty tone and short chapters skimmed over the top. Even though it is set in a convent, it is not particularly a religious book (in this, it reminded me of The Corner that Held Them.) It's nun fiction for the nones. Recommended by the From the Front Porch Podcast, it was a bit under the radar. 3/5 stars.
The Wildings by Nilanjana Roy. As a cat person, I found this to be inventive and sweet, though one that I had to pay attention to carefully. There are definite woo-woo plot elements (Dh tells me that is what makes it a comp to Watership Down, which I have never managed to slog through,) and there is a clash of rivals and the cycles of animal life that one skimmed, I enjoyed and will look for the sequel. 3.5/5 stars.
Four Desert Fathers translated by Tim Vivian. A few months ago my priest charged us with reading the Desert Fathers. This was a good selection to read - four lives of Desert Saints. While the main thrust of the book is less interesting to me (the difference between received texts) the material is very edifying. On a side note, the cover is beautiful. 4/5 stars

Currently in the middle of Fairy Tale by Stephen King. It was very slow slow sloowwww to start but now I am immersed in it.
I recently re-read Finders Keepers and End of Watch also by Stephen King, because I was bored and nothing good was available at the library. These are my favorites. I always cry at the end of End of Watch. Ugly cry.

If anyone has any suggestions for audio books for me, love to hear them. I love Stephen King. A lot. I'm in the middle of the Dark Tower series. And I liked Outlander a lot. Love Ken Follett books, have listened to a lot of those. And the whole Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
I do like fiction, big books, sweeping dramas, historic fiction. And I prefer books that have been out a while so I can get them on audio at my library. Love any new ideas for authors or series of books.
