McCarthy has suggested that if republicans take over congress, they will not approve of more support for Ukraine. I’m curious if this is what people really want?
My thoughts are that of course nobody wants to continue to pay for this war. But at this point it is a necessity. Not doing so is not a good option. Kind of like if an appliance breaks. You would rather spend that money on something else but it is necessary so you make it work.
What are your thoughts? Does this statement impact your vote at all?

I mean, it is not like there is any chance I would vote for a Republican anyway.

I think not supporting Ukraine is a very slippery road which will not be good for anyone.

No one wants to pay for another countries war. BUT I see this as part of being a democratic country and a duty to each other. We (the US in general) pay for a LOT of crap. It's mind blowing. I have 2 really good friends that are from UK. One is a nurse who just got her mom, sister and niece out of UK and brought them here to MN. Her dad and brother are still there fighting.
I know there is the whole, we should be using this money to help the homeless and our actual citizens, but would we??? seems like we've had these problems for yrs, and have we ??

With this statement from McCarthy, I'm struggling to think of a single Republican policy I agree with. Their entire "platform" such as it exists is antithetical to everything I believe. And what a gift to Putin, surprise surprise.
In answer to your specific question - does it impact my vote? Not really because there is not a chance in hell I will ever vote for a Republican on the federal or state level, ever again.

I agree with the others. We don’t WANT to pay for the war, but we kind of have to. If Russia isn’t stopped, they will just keep going. We saw what happened when the world did nothing when Russia invaded Crimea. This is so much bigger than just one country.

I'd like to hear more why you think that, please. Do you think if they are successful in Ukraine they will stop there? Exactly this. I'm not a fan of spending money on someone else's war but the alternative is worse. If other countries don't support Ukraine, what's to stop Putin or any other dictator including our own orange menace from invading and taking control of other countries that cannot defend themselves? It just becomes a free for all.

We have spent like the equivalent of like 1% of the annual defense budget and cleaned out our weapons closet like a trip to Goodwill. If you asked Cold War folks, if we’d be able to remove the threat of a country like Russia / USSR if we went back in time, for so “cheap” any US leader would jump on that deal. This *is* US defense spending.
Russia isn’t dead enough yet. If we pull out now China will be watching. Russia will have time to rearm. If McCarthy’s warnings come to pass, I never want to hear another word about the GOP being the party of National Security ever again. We will be spending even more than we are now, and be in a significantly worse position because we would inviting invasions everywhere. With Taiwan near the top of the list, igniting who knows what in Asia. And that would really mess up inflation and the price of gas since that’s all voters care about.
Anyway, like others voting blue anyway.

Putin has be stopped somehow though but I’ve no idea, long term, what it’s going to take.

I think not supporting Ukraine is a very slippery road which will not be good for anyone. I'd like to hear more why you think that, please. Putin has been very transparent that he wants to reclaim everything that was within the USSR borders and beyond. There are many post-Soviet state/countries that would then be open season. Holding the line benefits us all. Another who dropped off her ballot in a dropbox yesterday, voting blue down the line. It's pretty easy when in these midterms the prominent candidates have all embraced Trumpism. Moderates never make it past the primaries.

I think not supporting Ukraine is a very slippery road which will not be good for anyone. I'd like to hear more why you think that, please. Because if Putin succeeds, he will try somewhere else, perhaps a NATO country, which would cause a war. Also, China is certainly watching what we do. They want to take Taiwan, and if we back down now, they could be emboldened to try it. Everyone hates inflation. The trouble with the current crop of Republicans is that they can’t see past the ends of their noses. Sometimes if you take a stand, it prevents a much bigger problem later. Here’s the other thing. If Republicans have a top secret plan to battle inflation, I haven’t heard about it.

I agree that we need to continue to support Ukraine. We can't just allow Putin to have free reign on any piece of the planet he thinks ought to be his.

This reminds me to register to vote in Oregon now too. I'm going to add that to my list of things to do as soon as I get a permanent address, which I assume is necessary to vote here. Another good reason to consider renting something small until I find a house to buy. I can register from an apartment.

My vote is already set and keeping McCarthy out of the speaker slot was already a high priority. Unfortunately, my district will go red no matter how I vote.
We have to continue to help Ukraine. Not only is it in our interest to halt Putin's advance but if we ever expect western Europe to support us in anything again, we have to keep Putin off of their doorstep.

The world is watching. We must continue to support Ukraine. Putin and Xi and a whole host of authoritarian leaders are watching to see if we flinch. We are just now regaining our reputation and footing on the stage of world diplomacy after the destruction of it all under Trump. We can not flinch, we can not look away.
Aside from this, Ukraine is critical for global energy policy and global food policy. Few Americans understand the role of Ukraine in global food markets. Allowing Ukraine to fall to Russia would have devastating effects on global energy and food markets. If you think energy and food are expensive now...
1000% we stand with Ukraine.

In Minnesota, you can register the day of voting at the polling place. There are also conditions to get a license without a permanent address. We got our driver’s licenses on Monday and also registered to vote. Because we didn’t have a BILL (vs a contract) for utilities, and our lease is dated for November 1, we were unable to get Real IDs. But we did get a standard license. Phew! We had to take a written test and I didn’t want to have to do that again! I only got one wrong, but it was nerve wracking!

IIRC, it was less than 2 weeks, with nations sending support on their own as well. DH has spent the past 3 years working for NATO. If you thought our government moved slowly, try to coordinate 30 nations to work together! The speed was nothing short of impressive.

many nations take their cue from the US. if we stop supporting Ukraine, other countries may follow suit. i never want to give Russia the impression that they can stream roll over any nation they perceive to be vulnerable. as the supposed leader of the free world, the US can't take back seat to this.

My thoughts are it sure sounds like Putin is still in charge of the Republican party with this kind of promise. ETA It doesn't change my vote, just adds another tick mark in the Blue column.

I was just thinking that as well. Even just saying that the US may not continue to support Ukraine gives Russia hope and causes the rest of the world to wonder what is going to happen with the US. I also wonder if there wasn’t even more of a hidden message there, in regards to Russia meddling in elections.
