When you’re home alone do you need background noise like the TV or music? I sometimes wonder how abnormal I am in that I don’t usually put on music and only put on TV or a video if I’m actively watching.
I’m not really home alone right now but ds is sound asleep on another level. I can hear the dryer downstairs and the birds outside. I was just sitting here making and list and thought maybe I should put on some music but fear it will make me forget what I need to list!

I use music or the TV on news. Even when I’m working, the silence is too much.

I can go either way. If I am doing stuff around the house, I like it quiet. But I do have the TV on or play a podcast if I am scrapbooking or something like that.

No, I relish the silence. It doesn't happen often which is why I probably don't turn anything on. I need time to actually think without interruption.

No, I like the quiet. I don't ever have anything on in the background unless I'm actively listening or watching.

I never have background noise, alone or not. My dh on the other hand ALWAYS has the radio on, or the TV, or the music station on the TV, or something. It makes me crazy and someday when we have to live in a smaller place together he will have to use his earbuds more often. I like silence. I especially like to listen to the birds wake up in the morning and can't imagine ruining that moment with some background noise. Also, I watch "Criminal Minds" so I know that when I'm alone background noise (TV, music, whatever) would cover up the sound of the serial killer creeping up my basement steps. So silence is better.

I turn the TV on when I get up and if I’m at home all day it stays on until I go to sleep. Whether I’m watching or not. I’ve lived on noisy roads in the past, the TV helped me tune out the traffic noise. Now I live in a very quiet place and I need the TV on otherwise my dog barks at every single sound from the neighbours

Quiet for me, as well. I have misophonia and I don't like much noise.

If it's dark outside I have the TV on but in the day time I do enjoy complete silence.

The only time I tend to put the tv or music on if I’m not actually engaged with it is when I’m cooking the evening meal - then I like it in the background. Other times I’m happy with silence 😊

I’m comfortable with quiet. I also like music occasionally. But never television as background noise (except maybe a football game on a fall day, so never is probably a lie).

I’m pleasantly surprised at how many enjoy the quiet!
I work in an environment with a lot of background noise. Even without people they air handlers and automatic machines make quite a bit of noise. When dgd is home there is constant noise!

I don't like having background TV. I do put on music sometimes, although often I just have quiet. I grew up in a house where there was background noise 100% of the time -- usually daytime tv -- and it is nice to have quiet.

I work on a production line and even though my area is quieter then the rest of the plant, i still like to have quiet at home.. dh doesnt like riding with me after work because i turn off the radio and just listen to the road...
When i am cleaning or cooking i have nothing on.. if im scrapping, diamond dotting or beading then that is when i watch youtube or the many many things i have recoreded...

My TV is always on when I'm home alone ... sometimes it is just playing music but usually it is on The Food Network! I just like the background noise but I do watch a lot of TV too ...

It’s usually quiet. Sometimes as as a distraction from disliked chores I’ll listen to NPR or a podcast like The Moth or Wait Wait Don’t Tell me or Car Talk re-runs. A recent exception/obsession is music from the group VoicePlay. But most of the time not.
As long as a dog or cats are in the house the silence is peaceful and hearing thundering tiny paws fun. Once for two days we didn’t have animals and the silence felt horrible. We drove seven hours to adopt a cat the third day even though I’d said no more animals/heartbreak after the last of our oldies passed away.

I like quiet. I only have music or tv on, if I am actively listening or watching.
I have sensory issues. Non-stop noise is not good for me. I have earplugs with me at all times, so I can put them in when "all the noise" becomes too much. They don't make the noise go away completely, but they help mute and soften "all the noise". All the noise meaning >> overhead music, tv on, conversations around me, video games, speaker phone, phones ringing, machine and equipment beeping-making noises, people whining, kids screeching or crying, etc... I can endure it for only so long, then it's "sensory overload".
I have no problem going to a loud concert, show, activity (carnival, ball game, etc...). I always wear earplugs for stuff like that. I usually have to mentally prepare myself for "all the noise" situations. I get through it, knowing there will be complete quiet and time to decompress later.
Ear plugs are one of my favorite things.

Add me to the quiet list. I almost never listen to music. If I have my radio ( app on my iPad ) on, I’m listening to sports radio. Most people know that I listen to this a lot, and consequently, people ask me sports related questions. Ha, I hardly ever know the answer. Actually, my radio guys talk about other subjects a lot.
My tv comes on when I am eating my lunch or dinner. I usually find something that I’ve recorded, and get it ready to watch as soon as my food is done. When I’m doing chores inside my house, I now listen to a podcast. I’m really enjoying my favorite podcasts. It’s also how I fall asleep at night. Shuts my head off and really helps me relax.

I prefer quiet. Occasionally I may play a show or podcast if I’m scrapping but more often not. I can’t do music while working. 98% of the time I’ll have quiet during cooking or cleaning. If I turn on music, I often get annoyed with it and turn it off after a little while.

I like the silence. I rarely ever have a TV or even music on. I haven't watched a TV in years actually. I do, however use my laptop daily and watch something via streaming services. I prefer the laptop for a couple of reasons, one of which is earbuds to actually hear it. My hearing has gotten really bad lately and I would have to blast a TV to hear it. I went in yesterday to be tested for new hearing aids and he told me how much worse my hearing had gotten. He ordered a new pair for me and I pick them up on November 7. I am so excited to be able to hear again!!
My younger sister never turned her TV off. She said she could not sleep without the noise of it. It was left on 24/7. And when her daughter came to live with Mom and I, she did the same thing and it drove Mom and I nuts to have the TV on at 4am because she tended to wake early and go to bed early. She kept the TV in her room on all night just like her mom did. Fortunately I couldn't hear it from my bedroom and neither could Mom, so nights were okay for us.

As long as a dog or cats are in the house the silence is peaceful and hearing thundering tiny paws fun. Once for two days we didn’t have animals and the silence felt horrible.that is a different, weird kind of silence, isn't it?!? Even when our dogs are all just at the groomers (it takes about 4 hours), it's nice to not have them underfoot, but also, the feeling and silence in the house is strange / unsettling. I am getting more used to silence. I used to need background tv all the time, but since we don't have cable any longer, we only have the TV on if we're actively streaming something that we're watching.

I prefer the quiet when I am at home, especially if I am doing a project that requires my full attention, such as cutting fabric for a quilt or doing the math for a quilt or cross-stitching a piece with a lot of color changes.
Other times I will put on a tv show that doesn't require my full attention, usually a re-run of old CSI or L&O.
Constant noise of babble really bothers me.

Nope. I rarely turn the TV or music on when DH is not home. He on the other hand constantly has talk radio or the TV on and it drives me crazy!! I like to read or cross stitch in peace & quiet!

Both for me. It depends on what I’m doing and my frame of mind. Sometimes I relish the quiet and other times a little background noise keeps my brain from going off the rails.

I love the quiet. I do listen to audiobooks when I am crafting if I'm doing something routine. Sometimes I listen to music - maybe twice a month. TV or streaming are never on unless I am actively watching. I really don't like background noise.

If I didn't get much alone time I think I'd just enjoy the silence. But I've been home alone all day for the past 14 years. I need some noise, tv/streaming, Youtube, music, podcasts. I don't have something on every minute of the day, probably 60% of the time.

Yes, most of the time I have some kind of background music or the TV on. Not all the time, sometimes I just enjoy the quiet but about 90% of the time, when I am home alone, I like some the TV or Music playing.

Normally I have the tv on, or maybe music or an audiobook. I would love to be in total silence but I have tinnitus and it drives me insane. It's gotten much, much worse over the past couple of months and it's so loud I can hear it over everything.
