I have never in my almost 50 years heard anyone call a black person a racial slur to their face. I heard it for the first time Saturday night at a baseball game, when an older white fan of the other team was mad that the regular beer guy for our section didn’t serve him fast enough. He called him a dumb n*****.
The fans of our section weren’t having it. One man stood up and said, you don’t talk to him that way. Old guy argued with him and several more of our fans got up and told the older guy to get out. They blocked the stairs and forced him up the aisle until security came and removed him.
Point is that I agree that people have become emboldened to show that ugliness that was simmering under the surface all along. I doubt that scene would have happened ten years ago. I’m glad there were so many willing to stand up and say something, but it shouldn’t have happened at all.

It is appalling and unfortunately no longer surprising.
I don't want to get too off-topic, but yesterday, I was in a "hockey mom" Facebook group and there were a crap-ton of women defending two teen girls who skated out partway through a game in complete blackface.
Of course, complicating things, the person posted the team name and numbers and pictures of the girls (so people were upset about that and that is another issue), but so many were "you don't know the whole story, it was probably for their Halloween costumes, they probably don't know what black face even in, it was probably just too much Eye-Black." (spoiler, it was their entire face). It was about 50/50.
Short of cross burnings and direct N-word said to a black person, apparently nothing else is racist anymore either.

I hate that so many people are seeing and experiencing hatred against so many people and groups. However, I would humbly request that we move back to the anti-Semitism discussion as begun by elaine . I'm afraid I started the derailing, but I don't want to deflect from the original point of the thread, which I feel like I did. Sorry, elaine , I didn't mean to redirect! I do find it weirdly ironic that it is seeming that so many of the high-visibility comments are coming from Black people. It seems weird to me that people who are acutely aware of being treated as less-than feel the need to project that onto another group. I think I've read that's sociologically a known phenomenon, but you would think there would be more empathy. I guess just as with any group of people, some of them would be more empathetic and some of them would be happy to have a group that they could now smack down, and most would be somewhere in the middle.

That was the last time she ever said that word in front of me. We were staying with her on a vacation and I packed up the kids and walked out after 'discussing it with her'.. That "Christian" woman then said to me "I can say whatever G*d damn thing I want in my house". You sure can but I won't be here and neither will your grandchildren. It literally ruined any relationship I had with her.

Just wondering about the guy being an “old guy.” Do you think that had something to do with it?

I think that people who grew up in a time when it was acceptable among white people to use that word casually are more likely to have it come out in anger now.

And even then you better have some money, because we know how people feel about those "trailer trash", "welfare wonder" type, too. Ugh! Honestly, some people just want any excuse to be miserable to other people. I sometimes wonder what is it in them that makes them that way. Often it's taught. Absolutely. But some people grow up with that, and do NOT take it in and make it part of who they are. While other people have perfectly lovely parents and yet are still awful. And certainly some people fall into the "wrong crowd" in terms of hanging out with hateful people. While others just seem to brew up inside themselves on their own. The behavior of these people angers me, but sometimes the thought of what starts off as an innocent child and winds up being a hateful adult makes me sad, too. For every person spending their lives being hateful, not only are they hurting people, but they are wasting their life. A precious life with which they could have done positive things for others, for humanity, for the planet. But instead they spend their life spewing hatred. What a waste.

I have always said that Obama becoming president shook the ground and loosened the rocks these racists were living under and some of these idiots started to worm their way out. But Trump came along and kicked the rocks over and released all the crazies.

It all makes me so sick. It is indefensible.
I have a 2-year old bi-racial (black and white) granddaughter. Pity the person who ever makes a racial slur to her and I find out about it.

This is just my opinion, but I have always thought that desperately wanting to belong combined with a lack of knowledge (as in, who needs expert? I do my own research) is a dangerous thing. Because if you know very little about a topic, and you happen to listen to or read a charismatic Nazi, you could be hoodwinked into thinking that the Nazi is right about everything.

Imo, yes, it was the audacity of Obama to become President meant that ‘they’ had to put people back in their places, minorities, women, everyone back into the places they felt you belonged. Add to that Hillary running for POTUS and coming out ahead in the popular vote and they went nuts. It was a real woah that could happen moment for them. They were yearning to put everyone back in their places. It’s why they hate Nancy Pelosi so much. OMG a woman with power oh my we can’t have that. So when Trump says his racist crap they are all on board. It’s all sickening

The NBA has just announced it has suspended Irving for 5 games without pay because he just cannot bring himself to denounce anti-Semitism or claim that he has no anti-Semitic beliefs. www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34942326/nets-suspend-kyrie-irving-least-five-games-payHow anti-semitic does he have to be to not be able to say the politically correct things? The things that would allow him to play without controversy? Too bad that it is just a a drop in the bucket financially.

Elaine, have you heard of Bethany and Seth Mandel? I'm curious on your insight about them.
I don't know. I can't figure them out. They call out Kanye, but are eerily quiet about Trump. Their twitter feed...

there was reported in the news that there are critical threats against synagogues in new jersey and security is being ramped up.
I am gravely worried about what is happening right now. we all need to stand up for the rights of all people, like them or not.
we need to be ready to stand up verbally and in other ways for those discriminated against.

And what is most mind boggling to me is that any minority would be denigrating Jews, as the Jewish community have been huge supporters of minorities for decades.

Freedom of speech does not apply to how your employer, team, association feels about your words. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. It just means the government can’t arrest you & prosecute you in most cases. If his team, or the NBA has an issue with his public bigotry they can choose to not have him represent them anymore.

These are dark times for sure. It's not that it's new. It's that they all feel safe to spew their hate in the Post-Trump era. And there are people who don't get upset about it because they think "I'm not Jewish, so why should I care?" Beside the obvious, which is you should care because it's the moral and decent thing to care about others. But history also teaches us that it never stops with just one group of people. Eventually, they will come for someone you love. So have the backbone and stand up to hate, even if you aren't Jewish.
