Two large groups of trick or treaters so far.
Both groups - a number of kids: “Oh, wow! Are you Dr. Elaine???” Me: “yes. Happy Halloween!” 😅
Their parents: “do you really teach at Neighborhood ES?” Me: “yes. Happy Halloween!” 🎃
eta: we live 1.3 miles from the school and both my boys went there. We’ve lived here over 19 years now.

Not a problem I have ... I live 40 minutes away from my school ... other side of the city!

I do not live where I teach, but Saturday night I ran into one of my 5th graders on the light rail after the World Series game. 😂

I used to love trick or treating at and stopping at our 6th grade teacher's house...he always gave out homemade candied apples. One of the only places your parent would let you accept a homemade treat from.
I grew up in a really small town.

I did that. I never wanted to but when looking for a home my husband was fighting cancer. I needed to be some where that if our daughter needed pick up it would be easy for us to work out.
We lived within that district for 23 years. That was long enough.

Yep. I’ve been called the Principal twice and “principal’s helper” once 🤣. It’s the first time in 21 years that I’ve handed out candy, usually dh passes it out while I take the kid(s) around, but they’re both too old 😢. Some of my students gave me hugs…..it helped 😉

He said he used to go to my school and when I asked where he went now he answered with the name of the middle school. I thought he meant he'd switched to a different elementary school. I remember him just yesterday in kindergarten. hahaha Last year we had a bunch of little girls come up the street, with a few running ahead of the group. One got to my house, recognized me, and ran back to her friends saying "Hey, I found a substitute teacher!!!" hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I could see my school from my front window so yes, lots of local kids would stop in.
My kids also went to the school I taught at and I was always amused when I would drop them off at a play date and the friend would be all excited that a teacher had been to her house. Little kids do have us on a pedestal of sorts lol.

I don’t live where I taught; I’m about 10 miles from the school.
So imagine my surprise one year when a student came across the yard from the neighbor's house, calling my name. I don’t know why she and her siblings were in my area that night, but that’s the only time that’s happened.

Love these encounters with a teacher in the wild. When DD was in K she was stunned to run into her teacher in a store. "How did Mrs. K-D know we were here?" Then she expected her to show up everywhere we went for a couple months, asking "Do you think we will see Mrs. K-D?" when going into a store.

It's wonderful to be a part of the community. I worked in our Sunday School program for over 30 years, I loved seeing the grownup kids and their children.

My first year to teach we lived in the same suburban town, but not real close to the school. One Saturday morning the doorbell rang and I opened it to find 2 of my 5th grade students who had ridden their bicycles over to see me. I wasn't really thrilled that they had tracked me down. (I am not sure how they did that) It was the only time that happened, but we moved to a different home the next summer, still in the community.

I live in a small city and lots of the teachers are locals. We usually knew where our teachers lived (the kids’ teachers, I mean), and it was usually in our general neighborhood. The 13yo’s 4th grade teacher used to have the entire class and their families over for a party once or twice a year. The kids would put on a performance for us. Reading their stories/scripts, IIRC. I used to buy eggs from her chickens, too. One of the teachers lives across the street from my sister and I see her all the time. I’m sure lots of the grade school kids trick-or-treat at their teachers’ homes. You guys are all saints, as far as I’m concerned.

It was my absolute favorite thing about teaching in my neighborhood. In fact my partner teacher lived out in the country and she always brought her two boys to trick or treat in my neighborhood and then would hand out candy with me. The kids got a kick out of seeing both of us at my house.
I now teach across town a different elementary, but I still see former students. I had one that was a junior tonight.

I live 25 minutes away from my school. One of my HS students (taught her in 6,7,8 and now as a senior and had her sister in 8th last year) moved a mile from me.
I see my students from time to time when I’m out and about near where I work.
My son is friends with the son of his schools principal and they live diagonally behind us (our backward corners touch).
I’m friends with the parent of one of my kids from last year who also taught with me before I moved schools. I’d go to her house and there were always kids from my classes there.
It’s fun seeing kids outside of school.

I remember as a kid going to teachers houses. I know my kids thought it was cool to know were some teachers/support staff lived. We live in a tiny town so it's not hard to know where everyone lives.

My students love to stop at my house. Meeting the teacher's pets is an added bonus.

I'm a former teacher, turned sub. I haven't the past 2 years due to covid but went back this year. While passing out candy, a little girl and boy came up and the little boy (younger than sister, maybe kindergarten??) kept tilting his head and looking at me. The sister (2nd grade) yelled "Hey, you're my ubsitute teacher." That was how she pronounced it. It was cute!

This brings back memories when I worked at my daughter's school (not a teacher), but in our small town I couldn't go anywhere without being seen. A quick trip to Target was always a lot longer. Either you run into other teachers/workers and chat with them or students. It's been years since I worked there so it doesn't happen now except once and a blue moon I will see a teacher who I am still friends with. My daughter HATED to go to the store with me.. lol
