Apparently President Biden said coal mines should be closed. And Manchin is outraged and demanding an apology.

MANCHIN REACTS TO BIDEN'S OUTRAGEOUS COAL COMMENTS
Charleston, WV – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement on comments President Biden made about shutting down coal plants.
“President Biden’s comments are not only outrageous and divorced from reality, they ignore the severe economic pain the American people are feeling because of rising energy costs. Comments like these are the reason the American people are losing trust in President Biden and instead believes he does not understand the need to have an all in energy policy that would keep our nation totally energy independent and secure. It seems his positions change depending on the audience and the politics of the day. Politicizing our nation’s energy policies would only bring higher prices and more pain for the American people.
“Let me be clear, this is something the President has never said to me. Being cavalier about the loss of coal jobs for men and women in West Virginia and across the country who literally put their lives on the line to help build and power this country is offensive and disgusting. The President owes these incredible workers an immediate and public apology and it is time he learn a lesson that his words matter and have consequences.”
I checked. The latest estimate of people in the entire United States working in the coal industry is 63,345. Of that number 11,418 are in West Virginia as of 2020.
The number of homes being heated by coal furnaces as of 2019 was 130,000. And the number is declining.
We are not energy independent nor secure.
But what is happening across the country are the affects of climate change. Severe storms, wildfires, & widespread droughts and flooding. I mean there was flooding in Death Valley for heaven sakes. Not a place associated with a lot of water let alone flooding. And I believe there was some flooding in West Virginia this past year as well.
Some agency estimated that this year alone the cost of the wildfires and storm damage will be in the billions. I forget the exact number but it was a lot of billions. And this type of damage is happening almost every year now. And a lot of this damage affects folks who can least afford it. And contributing to this is the crap spewing into the air from fossil fuels.
Phooey. The only reason he is outraged is because he gets a chunk of his money from the dying coal industry.
The thing that bothers me about Manchin is early on when he was harping about inflation as a reason to chop President Biden’s bill into almost nothing. He was upset because the Dollar Store had raised their prices to $1.25 and a lot of his constituents could only afford to shop at a Dollar Store.
If that was the case, it seems to me that if he really cared about the people who vote for him he would work to bring programs & jobs to West Virginia to help his constituents so they could afford to shop at stores other than the Dollar Store. As it was he came across that it’s ok that some who vote for him can only afford to shop at a dollar store. And he calls himself a Democrat? Seriously?
