Reading a long one right now, so I didn’t finish a book this week.
What did you read?

I read In the Midst of Winter by Isabelle Allende for book club. 4 stars. It was an interesting story of 3 individuals who come together after an event occurs. We learn their back stories-2 of which were immigrants, one of them reminded me of American Dirt.
All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers. The author is a true crime podcaster and this story was definitely pulled from the Jon Benet Ramsey case. I was enjoying it till the end. I had to go back and reread a chapter to make sure I didn’t miss something. Nope. It’s one thing for an ending to be ambiguous, but this book had a super abrupt ending. Would not have read if I had known this about the book.

I read A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting by Sophie Irwin. I heard about it on the Novel Pairings podcast. It's a Regency romance about a young woman who tackles the London season in order to find a rich husband who can pay off her dead parents' debt and help her support her four younger sisters. Very Jane Austen-ish! I enjoyed it, it was a light read.
Lucy By the Sea by Elizabeth Strout. I had read Strout's book Oh, William about the same characters a couple months ago, so I was up to date with the story, which begins as the covid pandemic begins and Lucy heads out of New York City with her ex-husband William, who sees what is coming and convinces Lucy they must head for Maine and hunker down. Some reviewers were hostile to this book, not wanting to read pandemic fiction just yet, but I thought it was the best of any of her books I've read, mostly because it felt cathartic to read about a character sharing those feelings of disorientation, fear, and grief. I liked it.
You Can't Be Serious by Kal Penn. This is Kal's memoir about growing up the son of Indian immigrants, bucking the expectations of his community to pursue a career in acting, and the subtle and not-so-subtle racism he's encountered in Hollywood. He also chronicles the years he spent campaigning for Obama and then working for Obama's administration. I found his stories about the obstacles faced by Asian-American actors to be really enlightening. The book has a light-hearted tone with a lot of funny stories.
This book was also Kal's coming out moment, as he briefly discusses meeting his fiance, and some LGBTQ people were upset that he drastically downplayed being gay in the book. I felt it was very odd, too. I wondered if he may be thinking of writing another book just on that topic, but I'm probably wrong. I didn't even know he was gay and I've been a casual fan for years, so it seems that's a part of his life that he wishes to keep private.

Last week I read a Summer to Remember by Erika Montgomery. It was an easy, enjoyable read if a little predictable. But there were a few twists I didn’t see coming. 4/5 stars
Now I’m reading Holy Chow: An Andy Carpenter Mystery by David Rosenfelt. I love this series as it combines great humor, interesting mysteries and short chapters.

I read The Summer Place by Jennifer Weiner. I have really enjoyed her other books, but this one had way too many coincidences in the plot.
I also read Hold the Line: the Insurrection and One Cop's Battle for America's Soul by Michael Fanone.

I finished reading That's Not What Happened and it was so good! I also read Saving Noah - Lucinda Berry and read it in a few days, it was very good. Just started The Best Day Ever - Kaira Rouda and very interesting so far. I know there must be another book or two I am missing. when I read on kindle or listen on my phone, I return them and forget what I read! I really need to write my books on the calender!

I just finished Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan. I am not sure if JP has ever co-authored a book before, and I'll be honest - usually its when an author is about to jump shark, they partner write with someone (ie, James Patterson) and the writing is no where near as good as we've come to expect. This was not the case though. I couldn't really tell where one author began and the other ended. Picoult has a (magical) way to weave a modern topic with a topic I know very little about - such as elephants, comic books, Egyptian history (well that one was a dud, IMO), and in this case... bees. This story centers around the death of a high school girl, the boyfriend is blamed. His mother (a bee keeper) escaped long ago from an abusive marriage. While the authors sort of explore the topic of "is anger/abuse hereditary", a twist half-way through the book brings up another topic, which I wont talk about bc it's a major spoiler. Again, the book moved and was thought-provoking, but the end was abrupt and extremely unsatisfactory, which is why I only gave it four stars.

I read Fairy Tale by Stephen King and really liked it. It comes in at 650 pages, give or take, so it’s a commitment. It’s not his usual scary stuff, so no worries there.

I haven't posted in a couple weeks, so this is more of a catch up post.
It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey a very light romance, with a Hallmark movie vibe. I so appreciate that the men are more often lovely and supportive instead of damaged jerks who can be rehabbed by your love if you're just willing to put up with enough BS. But I digress, it's a light, but enjoyable and steamy read. 3.75/5
The Last to Vanish by Megan Miranda. A fairly well-written and paced, but predictable thriller which was let down by an even more predictable ending. 3/5.
Finding Me by Viola Davis. An incredible memoir and read - perhaps the best I've read, and that includes Becoming. I highly recommend this one. 4.5/5.
I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy. A memoir from the star of iCarly. It was very good and I enjoyed it, though it did suffer from following on the heels of Finding Me. 4/5.
Then I went on a Halloween reading kick: Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu - the vampire book that started them all, including Dracula. A short, enjoyable read if you like vampire books. But also nothing amazing and the misogyny was real. 3/5
A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson, written from the perspective of Dracula's wives. It was a really atmospheric read if you're a fan of the genre. 3.5/5.
Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies by Misha Popp. A lighter more fun Halloween read. It's a cozy mystery book and one of the first that I've genuinely enjoyed - maybe I just appreciated a break from all the dark reading! Super fun, light with heart and a pretty decent mystery. If you like this genre or if you're in the mood for a light read, I highly recommend it. 3.75/5.

Take Your Breath Away - Linwood Barclay
I've given up on 2 duds and read this sample and liked it. Luckily the library had it. I'm about 1/3 - 1/2 done and its moving along well so far!

I just started Holiday Romance by Catherine Walsh and Out of the Clear Blue Sky by Kristin Higgins. I am about 75 pages into this book and it is really good. I am listening to it on Audible. i also listened to Out Of The Clear Blue Sky - and loved it. Loved the voice of Melissa it just sucked me in. I started “Remarkably Bright Creatures” last night and also love it. I have a feeling it might tie “lessons in chemistry” as best book of the year for me.
