I have not ever found a Thanksgiving sweet potato recipe that I have really loved. How do you make yours or what recipe do you love?
My preferences are: 1)not too sweet 2)no nuts 3)like chunks of potatoes with some texture- not whipped smooth 4)marshmallows optional

I cube and cook them, toss them with a sauce made with orange juice, orange zest, butter, and a little sugar, then bake them with pecans sprinkled over the top. They're sweet but not sickeningly sweet, and the orange flavor goes well with the cranberry sauce and the salty stuff. I've been making them this way for about 20 years.

I love the Ruth Chris recipe which is pretty much exactly what you don’t want. Good luck on your quest.

I don't have a recipe, but I dice mine real small; like 1/4" cubes. I melt 1 TBSP of "real" butter per large sweet potato. I toss the small cubes in the butter and spead out in baking dish or whatever pan you use to roast veggies. Bake about 30 minutes at 400 degrees. When they are soft, I place in serving bowl, sprinkle with cinnamon and toss in some brown sugar (to your liking sweetness) and stir til sugar is melted. Using "real" butter is a key ingredient to yumminess. I have this Nutri Chopper that works well for chopping small. Nutri Chopper The photo on the box is deceiving though. No way can you put a whole onion in and press it thought the blades. I mediaum onion I cut in about 8 pieces. It is definitley faster than I can do with a knife.

I mash mine with a little butter, then put a crumb mixture of brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, more butter. Then bake until it gets bubbly and a little brown. I like that only the crust layer is sweet so you can take just the potatoes underneath if you want it less sweet.

You can certainly make this to your liking. Use half the amount of sugar, omit the nuts, and hand mash the sweet potatoes to keep them chunky. And if you prefer them topped with marshmallows, just substitute them for the crumble topping. But oh my, the crumble topping is so good!
Copied from an old thread… I’ve made this one dozens of times and it’s been stolen by many a person. Dixie was a wonderful friend who invited us to Thanksgiving dinner when I was on bedrest with DS. It’s the only Thanksgiving dinner I’ve not made in my 29 years of marriage. She did a great job!
Dixie’s Sweet Potato Casserole 3 cups sweet potatoes 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup milk 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla
Topping: 6 tablespoons of butter, cold 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1 cup pecans, chopped
Mash the potatoes and add the sugar, butter, milk, and eggs. Add in the vanilla. Pour into a greased dish. In a separate bowl, mix the topping (butter, brown sugar, and flour) with your fingers or a pastry blender until the butter is the sized of peas. Stir in the pecans and cover the potato mash.
Bake at 350 degrees for an hour if the dish is already warm, or 1 1/2 hours if you are pulling it cold from the refrigerator.
I bake my sweet potatoes (be sure to put them on a foil lined baking sheet or they will leak a bit and mess up your oven!), but you can also use boiled or canned. You can make them dairy free by substituting non-dairy butter and using almond milk or the like.
These can easily be made up a day or two before hand and kept in the refrigerator. The mash also freezes well--I freeze it before cooking so that I will have that crunchy topping. If I make them ahead of time, I'll put the topping in a separate zip bag so that the pecans don't get mushy. Add them just before baking. I've also made this in a crockpot and yes, the pecan topping does get crunchy.

I don't usually do a separate sweet potato dish, but sometimes add them to a sheet pan with carrots and onions. They are tossed with an orange ginger glaze for the final 10 minutes.

I just did a great recipe this week. You roasted the chopped sweet potatoes, Brussel sprouts, and we threw smoked sausage in too. Tossed in olive oil and garlic. Roasted in the oven for 45 minutes, sprinkled with thyme and some red wine vinegar. It was great.

Super simple and super delicious - peel, cube and boil til soft, lightly mash, stir in butter, scoop into serving dish and top with pats of butter sprinkled with brown sugar to your liking. Pop back into oven to get your topping crispy.
I’ve never eaten or even seen sweet potatoes served with marshmallows. I’m not a marshmallow fan so I probably wouldn’t ever make it myself that way but would give it a try.

I boil them, still in the skin, and then remove the skins and mash with butter and some brown sugar.
If you wanted chunks of the potatoes, I guess you could not mash them and just cut into chunks and sprinkle with brown sugar and butter and let it melt into the hot potato pieces.
I detest marshmallows on the potatoes, so that never happens at my home.

I don’t like sweet potatoes that are well sweet so I don’t add any sugar ,I only put butter and fresh crushed garlic and if I’m really fancy a little heavy cream.

I cube mine and sprinkle with some brown sugar and then pour some Dr pepper over the top.
The carbonation helps them get tender and the Dr pepper cooks down to a glaze. You can omit the brown sugar for less sweetness.

I love sweet potatoes, and I am always looking for different ways to prepare them that don't involve marshmallows. LOL I tend to like more savory sweet potatoes, though years ago, I had a recipe I received in a cooking class that had a crunchy pecan brown sugar topping that I loved. I recently found this recipe and can't wait to try it: www.aspicyperspective.com/garlic-butter-scalloped-sweet-potatoes/

Boil whole potatoes until fork tender, remove from water and run under cold water til cooled a bit. Reserve the water for later. Peel potatoes (skin should just slide off) and slice somewhat thick, not like au gratin potatoes. Heat oven anywhere between 350 and 400 depending on how fast you want them to cook. Layer flat in glass Pyrex pan. You can do 2-3 layers stacked. I try to stagger them so the centers cook Add pats of butter on top layer of potatoes, every 1-1/2 inches across the whole top. Sprinkle sugar (I use granulated) over the whole top. I don’t measure, I just get a good but thin coating over the potatoes. Pour 1/4 inch of the reserved water over the top. Bake until slightly browned on top. I do use a baster to coat the top layer on occasion so they don’t dry out. I don’t have a set time, it really depends on the temp. Usually between an hour and 2 hours. They will sort of keep their shape but will be tender.

I've made Alton Brown's Chipotle Mashed Sweet Potatoes a few times. They're especially good when you're having a smoked turkey. You can mash/smash them to whatever consistency you prefer.

i cube, toss with a bit of olive oil and italian season and roast. that's it - simple and delish! This is what I was going to suggest as well. I do them this way; I also add a sprinkle of coarse salt because I love the little bit of crunch it adds, but that's just me. I also like them just mashed with only butter!

Peel and cut potatoes into chunks. Clean and cut up a fresh pineapple. Put both on a sheet pan, salt and pepper, roast in the oven until soft. Mash it all together and add a little butter. Pineapple adds a little sweetness and tartness.

I peel and cut into chunks then steam them until tender then transfer into a baking dish add a can of mandarin oranges along with a bit of juice then top with butter, cinnamon, raisins and brown sugar. Simple and easy to control the sweetness. Bake them in the oven to get everything else hot.
Some year we steam but turn into mashed basically just the sweet potatoes, butter, cream cheese, cinnamon and a bit of brown sugar. So good but not as healthy thanks to the cream cheese.

my sister and i are the only ones that like sweet potatoes. given the choice, we would have it whipped with butter, evaporated milk, brown sugar and some cinnamon. to us, it's more of a dessert than a side. if i had to do it as a side, it would bake it like a potato and top with butter and brown sugar. we never use marshmallows on anything.

I'm no help. Mine is a sweet potato casserole. It's got nuts, butter, brown sugar, white sugar, etc. So good. My dh that does not like sweet potatoes loves this. He looks forward to it that one time a year I make it.
