My husband had an appendectomy last Tues. He had the laproscopic surgery and appendix didn't burst, so everything went well. He has three small incisions but it's still pretty painful. He can't sit for long and riding in car will be painful (has dr appt). Any tips from anyone who has gone through this?

No experience. Would holding a pillow in front of him help particularly in the car?

My 9 year old had an emergency appendectomy last April. His did burst and he was in the hospital. This all took place 5 days after I had a full hysterectomy. Life was glorious at my house.
I did have the pillow near him if he had to sit up. We also would help him to sit up by gently pulling him with his arms (this was the first few days).
We ate simple foods as well. It sounds silly but brothy and soft foods keep everything moving. No straining or pushing. I didn’t want him to get sore from pushing or bearing down.
My son still “brags” about his hospital trip. I tell him he ruined my alone time!!!!

I'd definitely have him seen. I had an laparoscopic appendectomy with no complications and really didn't have pain that OTC motrin didn't take care of. Other than laughing, I don't recall any pain. Good luck to him.

My dh had an open appendectomy and I would say after a week he was in about the same pain as your dh. After laproscopic surgery, I would think he should be feeling much better. I see that the car ride is to go to the Dr so he should be very honest about his continued pain. Also, hitting bumps is what hurts when riding in the car, so try to avoid that?

My 19 year old son had a laparoscopic appendectomy last June. He was in quite a bit of pain for about a week, then it eventually tapered off. He never took anything stronger than Tylenol/Motrin. They prescribed Percocet, but those had no effect. He needed help getting up for about 10 days or so. Getting home from the hospital they gave him a pillow for in-between his stomach and the seat belt, and holding the pillow against him also helped if he had to cough.

I had one on Halloween, so 2 weeks ago today. The first 5 days were really rough. My husband had to help me stand up and to walk to the bathroom. I also had laparoscopic and the incision on my left side was really painful. I wasn’t prepared for how painful it was even on the pain meds that were prescribed for me.
I am getting better every day and am doing more each day. I was able to go vote on the 8th day and thankfully I didn’t have to wait long. Holding a small pillow over the incisions helped a lot. A pillow also helped the couple of times I have gone out to eat.
I have my 2 week follow up this afternoon and I expect I will get an all clear. My only issue is still running out of steam before I’m ready to!
Hope your husband feels better soon!

Holding a pillow over the incision when sitting or standing really helped a bit. It's only been a week and I would hope that the pain will dissipate from now on. I was on pain meds for about 3 days then it was much milder, though it took about 3 weeks before I was moving around like normal.

Good luck to him. Oh wow, that's great that you didn't feel so much pain. He goes to the doctor tomorrow, so hopefully there aren't any complications that we are unaware of. The hospital he went to last week doesn't have a great reputation. He is feeling a little better each day and is actually sitting at his desk for a couple hours (conference calls) then laying down as the bed and reclining chair are the most comfortable. He won't go to work this week and is off next week, so lots of time to recover.
He is 54, so probably just won't recover as fast as someone younger. I was teasing him because the nfl qb of his team played 10 days after his appendectomy many years ago!

We are in southwest PA, so roads are a mess here. When I drove him from the ER to the hospital where they were doing the surgery he was a mess with all the bumps in the road. I had to really watch to try to avoid bumpy roads.

We did not get to vote because he went to the ER the morning of election day and the surgery was that night. So do you feel back to normal now, or are you still being careful to avoid pain?

Use a large bed pillow tomorrow when you go to the doctor. Place it over the incisions and then buckle the seat belt. The pillow with distribute the pressure and pad the area. That’s what I did when I had my c/sect. I had to deliver in a major hospital and it was an hour from the house. That was a long ride home!
