We have a possible job opportunity in the Syracuse area. It looks so beautiful! We are currently in TX but have lived in the north before.
Please tell me the good/bad/ugly. Any opinion on Catholic high schools? Our daughter is current sophomore.
TIA!

Ds just told me that a ginormous chip plant is being built there. It's a $billion plus job.
That's all I have. ☺

According to the news, they are getting lots of snow right now. 😁 They didn’t nor do they get as much snow as Buffalo. Hopefully cat2007 will chime in. She’s outside of Syracuse.

I live in the suburbs of a Syracuse. I’m just heading out the door to grocery shop and run errands but I’ll come back later and respond in more detail. There are definitely a few other peas in this area so hopefully they’ll chime in as well.
Malibou is correct about the chip plant - definitely big news for the area!
We’re 2+ hours from Buffalo so not experiencing the terrible storm thank goodness. Generally (or at least the last time I saw the stats) Syracuse does average about 20 more inches of snow than Buffalo annually, though.

I've lived in the Syracuse area most of my life (with the exception of college and a 6 year stint in Buffalo). We get all four seasons and lots of snow. There are areas within commuting distance of Syracuse but closer to Lake Ontario that get a ton more lake effect.
I know nothing about Catholic High Schools, but I have a friend who's son graduated from Christian Brothers Academy. They loved the school, but I'm fairly certain he was there for the football not the religion.

Generally (or at least the last time I saw the stats) Syracuse does average about 20 more inches of snow than Buffalo annually, though. I’m not from Syracuse, so take this with a grain of salt. Syracuse gets a lot of ‘nuisance snow’ from lake effect snows ( different lake than buffalo ) so they get a lot of coating to 2” and it adds up. It’s like that afternoon thunderstorm thing in Florida they get used to it and it doesn’t really register to them until it’s ‘real snow’. So Syracuse area people don’t think they get ‘a lot’ of snow, but it seems to be snowing rather often. Not being from the area I thought it was a lot of snow because it was snowing a coating like every other day. So to this outsider it seemed like it was always snowing & the ground was always slippery because no one does anything about it until it’s ‘real snow’ plus todays tiny coating of snow covered yesterdays ice so you can’t see it. Oh and the wind can be very bitter too. Not as bad as Rochester but damn cold at times. Nice town, & really nice surrounding area if you can handle bitter cold winters.

Like christine58 said, I'm in a Northwest suburb of Syracuse where we get a lot of lake effect. We are on the Onondaga-Oswego county line so we get it all. It can be whiteout conditions at my house and clear as a bell in Syracuse itself. Right now, it's sunny but pretty windy and 25F. The seasons here are beautiful. The Finger Lakes are a short drive away. There is something to do every season: hiking, biking, skiing, ice skating. You name it, we can do it! Hope this helps!

I grew up not too far from Syracuse, and my family still lives there so I visit frequently. Another great thing about Syracuse is that it is very affordable (depending on where you are moving from, of course). The airport is small but very easy to manage; I love flying in and out when I visit family - SO MUCH easier than O'Hare, my home airport! There is a lot of natural beauty in the surrounding areas. Many of the suburban public schools are excellent; I don't know much about the Catholic schools but I'm sure there are some good ones too. The biggest challenge is the winter weather, but if you can deal with that, I'd say give Syracuse some serious consideration!

Hop2 described it well - we do get the occasional big storm but usually it’s just a constant accumulation of smaller amounts that eventually add up to a lot.
I don’t love winter but do love having four seasons. Fall is my favorite by far as I also don’t love super hot weather LOL. As Cat2007 mentioned there are tons of outdoor activities to do in all seasons. We have some very pretty state and county parks in the immediate area and many more a short drive away.
We’re also an easy drive to lots of fun places to visit. I can get to the Finger Lakes in about an hour and the Adirondacks in a couple of hours. NYC and Toronto are about 5 hours away.
I don’t know much about the Catholic high schools. I know there are a few in the city and a few in the suburbs. I’ve heard that Christian Brothers Academy (mentioned up thread) is well regarded academically.
If your family likes sports we have Syracuse University football and basketball, plus minor league hockey and baseball teams. If you like the arts the Landmark Theatre in the city hosts touring shows (I have season tickets) plus some concerts, and there are tons of concerts at the Ampitheater at Onondaga Lake.
For shopping we have lots of Wegmans stores plus Aldi and a couple of smaller chains. There’s one Trader Joe’s in the eastern suburbs and one Costco in a different suburb. Destiny USA is the only mall that has survived in this area but there are lots of strip mall type shopping centers in the various suburbs.

I was born and raised in Syracuse. While I haven't lived there in over 20 years, I still have family and friends there and visit pretty often.
Syracuse and Central NY are in a beautiful area that experiences the four seasons. In and of itself, Syracuse is not a pretty city. Unless it's changed a LOT, downtown is pretty much dead. If you're a sun worshipper/lover, Syracuse is not the place for you. On average, Syracuse gets more snow than Buffalo and Rochester. Syracuse experiences a LOT of days with gray, cloudy weather all year round. (A Dr I formerly worked with who moved to Syracuse from California had lights in his office he'd sit under to prevent seasonal affect disorder.) One positive of all the gray weather is that people are often really happy on sunny days!
I know people that have graduated from Bishop Ludden, Bishop Grimes and CBA and all received good educations. I've not heard that education from these schools have deteriorated any in the recent years. High school football is nothing like it is in TX. Syracuse University sports are big.
Syracuse is not as safe as it used to be as crime has been increasing. That said, I don't feel unsafe when I'm there (however, I lived 20+ years in NYC).
There's not really a lot to keep kids occupied unless they like sports, especially in the winter. There are beautiful parks, and a fair amount of outdoor activities. Summers in NY are great, fall is beautiful, but the winters can be lonnnnnggggggg.
Syracuse is ideally located, about 2 hours to Rochester/Buffalo, Albany, Pennsylvania, the Adirondacks, the St. Lawrence River and Canada. The Finger Lakes are beautiful as are the 1000 Islands area, the Adirondacks and Niagara Falls (and Letchworth).
Major grocery stores are Wegmans, Price Chopper, Tops and Aldi. As has been stated, there is a Trader Joe's on the East side and Costco on the west side. I believe there are two BJ's--one north/northwest and one east. There is no Sam's Club. I think there's only one Chick-fil-a, if that's your thing. There's two Kohl's, one Macy's and no JCPenney. You'll often have to drive a bit to shop.

I went to school in upstate NY about an hour from Syracuse - and winters (and a lot of fall and spring) were very very cold and gray. But the seasons are gorgeous and the finger lakes are beautiful.

Definitely agree with the snow comments. November-March for sure. Fall is gorgeous here. And Adirondacks are driveable. Spring is meh and can be sloppy. The Catholic schools mentioned are well-thought of. Also Manlius Pebble Hill (MPH) for college prep. Lacrosse, hockey, soccer, football big here. The MOST here and Strong Museum in Rochester for kids. Nearby ski/sledding areas, golf courses. Finger Lakes nearby. Lots of lakes! Great hospitals (St. Joe’s, Crouse, University, and Golisano Children’s). Many good local restaurants, craft breweries, chain restaurants, fast food (Panera, Chipotle, various CFA locations, and the other usuals). Downtown has a theatre venue (Landmark Theatre), OnCenter, and Crouse-Hinds theatres. Regal movie theater and a Movie Tavern in Camillus. Hockey team. SU sports. Downtown has some hidden gems. Cazenovia and Skaneateles are nice, nearby.
