We are replacing the carpet in our house and need recommendations. We no longer have a dog, but I hope to get one in the future. My kids have cats and bring them to our house when they come home for holidays. We were looking at Lowe's and Home Depot, but would love any recommendations.

Home Depot has a pet friendly line of carpeting that gets good reviews. We got some last April or so, and it still looks good - of course, that's only a handful of months, so that's not saying much! But it's been pretty easy to spot clean. We have 3 cats, and one of them has a pretty sensitive stomach. I did buy a Bissell Green Machine or whatever it's called (the smallish stain removing wet vac things they sell) and it works way better than trying to clean with Spot Shot or something.
Do not get a looped carpet, as it's relatively easy for pet claws (esp cats) to pull a loop out and mess it all up.

We are doing the opposite and replacing our carpet with vinyl plank flooring. I can't keep up with the cat and carpet.

Hardwood/tile/vinyl floors with area rugs. We send the rugs out when they need cleaning. Folex for smaller jobs between cleaning. If wall to wall carpet is non-negotiable, then I agree with RosieKat and avoid looped carpeting.

Another vote for vinyl planking.

I'll never have carpet again. Go for some type of hard floors and then buy a nice area rug if you really want carpet somewhere.
I love how easy to clean hard floors are and you know they are clean, if any pet vomits or pees somewhere the clean-up is so easy and it's complete - no carpet fibers to hold on to any lingering smells.

We only have a very light cream carpet in our downstairs. It is colder down there, so I don't mind having carpet on that level. The rest of the house is wood with a kitchen of LVP. We have a Euphy on the upstairs floor and a Shark on the main level. Having gone to wood floors in 2013, I don't see going back to carpet again. I had to shampoo them every 4-5 months. I would buy the most pet resistant carpets I could afford.

We have a special carpet pad that is made for pets - worth the upgrade as it doesn't allow anything to seep through to the subfloor.
