I tested positive for covid yesterday and was able to start Paxlovid this afternoon. It seems as though I’m in the lucky percentage of the population who experience “Paxlovid mouth”. It is a terrible taste in my mouth that shows up unless I am actively chewing (food, gum) or holding water. I have tried ginger chews, and they worked okay, but I’m running through the bag quickly and looking for other alternatives. Any success stories? Thanks!

I feel your pain. That was me a week ago and nothing helped. The best thing that worked or held it off was wintergreen lifesavers. Another friend of mine had no luck with those however. But I will tell you this, I took my last dose Monday morning and by Monday evening the taste was gone

I read that cinnamon hard candy works well.

Yep, been there. If I was sucking on a hard candy it helped. Not too long after my last dose, it was gone.

I felt so much better within 12 hours. I also had good luck on taking one pill at a time. The first couple times I took all three at once. And then I thought I would try one at a time and the taste wasn’t so bad but maybe it was in my head

I used lifesavers and it worked pretty well, but not so great for sugar consumption.

I just had this last week as well. It was like I was sucking on poop. Bleh. Only thing that worked for me was sucking on mints. But I didn’t want to do that as I was sleeping a lot so I just sucked it up. Sorry you’re having this

Sorry you're dealing with this on top of Covid. One of the drugs, the one used for hiv patients, ritonavir, has the same side effect, I think. Root beer barrels, old fashioned candy sticks and mints got me through the 5 days. Dh liked lemon drops. Good luck, I hope you find something that works.

I drank sprite when I took my dosage and I ate salted pretzels at the same time and it helped me.

I too was on Paxlovid last week and felt like I'd been sucking on a gas pump. A couple packs of starburst candies helped the most for me.

I used a lot of breath mints and brushed my teeth a few extra times. It goes away quickly when you finish up the paxlovid.

I got it as well but to be honest, 5 days of it was nothing compared to having that same taste for the first 3 months of my pregnancies with both of my kids. That's how I knew I was pregnant when I got that taste in my mouth. Nothing really worked. I just lived with it.

Am I the only one who thought the taste was closer to an IPA with a grapefruity aftertaste? 🙃

My daughter thought listerine helped - please don't drink with covid - I'm pretty sure that post was in jest but alcohol impedes your respiratory system - definitely not what you need with covid!

My husband and I sucked on lemon drops and it seemed to help with the metallic taste.

Yes this is an old thread but I'm adding to it on purpose. I just got prescribed Paxlovid, and it's arriving tonight, just in time for Christmas.
Can I just check, is this nasty taste constant for the 5 days, or do the mints/lemon etc. subdue it until the next dose? Have I got any chance of actually enjoying my Christmas dinner tomorrow?

It was horrible, my favorite thing was lime popsicles (Outshine). But also used other strong flavored hard candy/mints.
But after 24 hours on the meds. I felt so much better and recovered faster than dh who was the one to get me sick.

I took my first dose 1.5 hours ago. Might be just imagination but I feel a bit better already...

What I meant was the bad taste doesn’t stay in your mouth all day at least it didn’t for me. The first bite of something might’ve tasted funny but then after that it was fine it was more annoying than anything else

I felt better quickly after my first does too. A lot better the next day.
I could still taste food no problem. It's just the in between times.

Wow! My temperature went down and I suddenly had the energy to wash the bedding and put fresh on the bed. I made DH a Christmas card. I got hungry. That stuff is GOOD. After 5.5 hours I'm getting achey and shivery again now but it's that time of night. The taste isn't too bad. Kind of looking forward to my next dose.
