I am 5 books away from reaching my reading goal this year. What are some of your favorite quick reads? I read some long novels this year so I feel it’s okay to balance my goal out with some shorter ones. I’ll read anything except for Romance or Sci-fi.

How many pages is a quick read for you? What's a long novel?
I read the Book of Lost Names in two days and loved it!

From my old teaching days - The Hundred Dresses and Understood Betsy. I have no idea why those two titles popped in my head when I read your OP. I haven’t thought of them in years. They’re maybe two or three evenings worth of reading each. Sweet stories, both of them.

Confections of a Closet Master Baker: One Woman's Sweet Journey from Unhappy Hollywood Executive to Contented Country Baker Book by Gesine Bullock-Prado
This was a really quick read and I enjoyed it, but I really like her. It is written by Sandra Bullock’s sister about when she moved to Vermont and opened a bakery.
PS Your Cat is Dead by James Kirkwood Jr. This was dark humor. I remember really liking it (but I like quirky reads) but I read it in the 80’s. I am cleaning out a bookcase and just saw it again this week is the only reason it comes to mind right now. 😆. Hopefully I am remembering it correctly. 🤞😄
Both were only a night’s read (a few hours).

Ghost by Jason Reynolds. It's middle grade but it's really good (and the first book in a four book series.) I listened to it on audio (3ish hours, but the book is 192 pages.)
Or maybe a graphic novel, I read one about Tetris in a few hours yesterday, although I didn't give it a great rating, it was a quick read. The Called Us Enemy by George Takei was really good.

Evidence of an affair by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a quick read.
I’m reading Counterfeit by Kirsten Chen and it’s under 300 and really good!

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. I read it in one sitting. Makes the most banned book list pretty much every year.

I'm reading a silly/sweet book right now that would have been a quick read except it's been a super busy time for me. I could see myself at some other time reading this in a day or so. It's by Mary Kay Andrews, called The Santa Suit.
I also just read a book by Ann Patchett that I loved. It's called These Precious Days. It's a collection of essays, and I read it really quickly.

Winterdance by Gary Paulsen. If you work I suggest reading it on a Friday because you will stay up all night to finish it.

I agree on the Takei graphic novel, it was what I read to finish my goal last year. Ghost was so good too! Honestly any Reynolds book is great, Long Way Down was so awesome too. The Crossover by Alexander was great and he has a new book Door From No Return. I haven't read it yet but heard it is really good. A book I haven't seen mentioned is Ring Shout by Clark. It was the weirdest book I read last year but also my favorite of the year. Now Is Not the Time to Panic by Wilson was good and I read it in 3 days just waiting for my son to get out of school and activities. Lastly, True Story by Alexie is in my top 5 of all time. I've read everything he's ever written. Then I found out he was accused by multiple women of sexual harassment/assault. Seriously, of everyone we learned about from Me Too, he's the one I was moved disappointed to find out about. ETA The Giver was a good kids book, my niece recommended it to me and I like having stuff to talk about with her.

I highly recommend The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck.
You can read it in an afternoon. It is loosely based on the occupation of Norway during WWII by the Germans, although Steinway never mentions the name of the occupied country nor the name of the occupier in the novel. It is a very uplifting story which leaves you with hope for the human race.

Shine by Jodi Piccoult one hour Redhead by the Side of the Toad by Ann Tyler four hours A Christmas Carol by Dickens 3-4 hours
I feel your pain because I’m not going to hit my goal this year after reading Lonesome Dove (36 hours) and its sequel The Streets of Laredo. Totally worth it though unlike the year I read Atlas Shrugged (62 hour) and wanted my life back.

The Pants Of Perspective: A 3,000 kilometre running adventure through the wilds of New Zealand by Anna McNuff
I found it a quick read but according to Amazon the print version is over 500 pages but honestly I find that hard to believe.
The Patient Assassin: A True Tale of Massacre, Revenge and the Raj by Anita Anand

The shortest books I’ve read over the last few years according to Goodreads are Everybody Fights by Kim and Penn Holderness Infinite Country (191 pages and very good) by Patricia Engel I’m Still Here by Austin Channing Brown (185 pages) The Blessing of a B Minus (208 pages) *****The Deal of a Lifetime by Frederik Backman (65 pages). love this short story by this author. Great holiday read.
If you read Wonder there are some short follow up books in the series.

I worked on it for two weeks one summer vacation. I’m an Ann Tyler fan too. I have a hard time deciding if Lonesome Dove or The Accidental Tourist is my favorite book.

Hi a few years ago I read some Dean Koontz short stories. They are
In the Heart of the Fire Photographing the Dead The Praying Mantis Bride Red Rain The Mercy of Snakes Memories of Tomorrow
I also read Catholic young adult fiction as they tend to be rather short. I would definitely recommend Corinna Turner's unSPARKed series. It is set in a future Australia or New Zealand (I don't recall which) where Dinosaurs roam the earth. There are hunters that hunt the big dinos and farmers that tend herds of smaller ones. It is an excellent series and they are all short. You can read them in a few hours. I think there are 9 or 10. Oh and there are also shorter stories that are offshoots. The worst part is waiting for the next installment!
If you are into Urban Fantasy Pulp Crime Novel type fare then I would recommend a series called Rock Band Fights Evil by D.J. Butler. There are about 8 of them. They are short and crazy.
I also like Stephen King short novels. They go very quickly!

I have a similar end of year issue so I’ve been devouring Harlequins the last few days. Which Is not everyone’s thing (lol). Two lit fic shorr reads I plan to finish are “Stay True” by Hua Hsu (TONS of buzzy praise for it) and Liberation Day by George Saunders because I love him.
