Hope you don’t mind this memory that I’m sharing as this was also shared with the Peas 9 years ago today. The backstory-was having a celebratory birthday dinner for my husband with my kids at our home in CA. My mom called to wish him happy birthday from NYC (they are from Palm Springs). They were meeting up with my sis and her family (from Maryland)for early Xmas weekend in the city. My dh made some off handed comment about I should surprise visit them. Haha. Well the kids thought it would be so funny. Next thing I know my dh is checking for flights and he’s booked me on a red eye. I had never been to NYC, had a California weight jacket and only the knowledge of the hotels they were staying at. I had no plan other than surprising them. Got to the airport and shared with the Peas and asked for help on how to surprise them. Most felt just being there was surprise enough. This was before find my friend so could not track them. It was an old school mission. But I wanted it to be more than just a phone call saying I’m in the lobby. So I went to a Starbucks that was between the hotels and camped out near the window. About an hour later I spotted my sister so I began trailing and crossing the street until I spotted all of them. Figured out which way they were going and got ahead of them. This is the worst video, but my all time favorite memory. My mom passed away this year, but this was probably the best gift I gave her. vimeo.com/82416028Share the best surprise you ever pulled off. This was 9 years ago and it has inspired other family to attempt other epic surprises, but I’m definitely the OG in my family.

I just did a fun surprise this last weekend. My (single) sister lives in LA, I'm up in Oregon. She had asked me in November if inviting someone via email was acceptable which I said it was. She was planning on having an open house and had me proof the email before she sent it out. I knew I wasn't busy that weekend, and it's easy (and cheap) to fly from Eugene to LA. I made arrangements with my nephew (her son) to pick me up from the airport. I had told her earlier in the day that she should be expecting a package and hoped it wasn't delivered too late because she goes to bed pretty early. I knew I wasn't going to be able to get there before 9 so I kept my fingers crossed that she would stay up. When we got there my nephew rang the doorbell and stood in front of the Ring so she couldn't see me. She cracked the door and saw it was her son so opened the door and I was standing behind him. I stepped out and said 'surprise!' and she just stood there and stared at me, like she couldn't quite comprehend what was happening. I came in and hugged her and she said 'are you my package?' and started crying.
I was so glad i went down, she had a lot to do to get ready for her party so I was happy to help. Plus I got to spend some time with my nephews.

What do you mean with OG? It’s a slang term which stand for original gangster and has morphed into just meaning original. So in my family people have since attempted to pull off surprise which I love as I think it continues to show how fun this was to experience.

Thanks everyone in letting me share this memory and to the Peas who aided with creating a way to share the link. marysue63 thank you for sharing your story. I think you truly understand the thrill of the surprise and seeing the look of shock on the face in front of you. I know this was a pivotal experience for me in understanding that giving a gift of time/experience trumped most physical gifts I could ever purchase.

What a great story! I am sorry about your mom. The biggest surprise I ever pulled off was very similar to yours. My parents left our area in Texas with their RV to travel around the east coast and were ending up in Pennsylvania where they both were originally from to visit all our extended family. Me, my sister and two of my brothers decided to fly to Pennsylvania and surprise them. My aunts, uncles and cousins all knew we were coming but my parents had no clue. I wish I had a picture or video of their faces when the four of us walked into my aunt’s house. My cousin picked us up at the airport. He said he told them he had to go pick up the kids but he didn’t tell them whose kids. This was in October of 1992. It was the last time we saw my grandmother. She died the following March and my dad died suddenly in October of 1993. My sister died in February of 2020. So, so glad we did it and had those memories. It was so much fun! Thanks for sharing your story. Brought back some great memories for me.
