The cribbage thread is interesting and got me reminiscing/thinking about family games using a regular card deck.
Does your family have a signature card game?
For my extended family, the game of choice is 45. It is a game I never played or learned growing up because no one in my immediate family or friends played it. I don’t think it is widely played. However it is big with my mom’s cousins and families, who many live close and have large families. It (and horseshoes and recent addition of cornhole) is a tournament game at all of our reunions.
My Friends and family played a lot of 31 (we called sneako but also called Scat I think) or Pitch.
Hearts and Spades and Rummy (regular and Gin) were also in the roatation.
I recently used an online game to learn how to play Euchre, but never have played with real people. Hahaha.
I have never played Bridge, but know a lot of older people who do.
My parents played Pinochle, but I never learned that one either.
Regular card games seem to be being replace by games like Cards against Humanity, Apples to Apples, etc. I am curious how many families still play cards games using a standard deck of cards.

We are wild about Shanghai, which is a rummy based game, very similar to Phase 10. We've been getting together (my family, my parents, my aunt, 2 cousins) once a week to play for 3 or 4 months now! It's played with 2 standard decks of cards (for 4 players or less) or 3 decks (for 5-8 players). Good fun!

We do. We even have a family Christmas game tournament that includes card games as well as other games. The card games we regularly play with a traditional deck of cards are Hearts, Rich man, poor man, Nertz, and poker.

We play a card game named "Golf." You play 18 holes (hands) and the winner has the lowest score.

I wish! Growing up we always played card games - rummy, hearts, poker. Unfortunately I married a non-game player and gave birth to one as well. I get my card fix by playing Shanghai with a group of friends once a month. When we were overseas I also played bridge weekly. At home I work jigsaw puzzles instead.

When I was a kid, I played several card games with my late mom, especially Gin Rummy and Cribbage. The only game I play with cards now is Solitaire.

That was a staple high school thru today. But we always include playing the silly ones (I.e. deuces, Jacks, and king with the ax and a natural pair of 7s take all). The deal is rotated and dealer gets to pick what game is played.

I play cards with my family pretty much every weekend. It's a game called Up and Down the River that is fun and interesting. It keeps you on your toes and changes each round which makes it fun.

I grew up playing Euchre. I absolutely hated playing games as a child (still not a huge fan) but I always had to play because there were four in our family and Euchre takes four. I was always threatening to teach the dog how to play. I don't play any games with a regular deck as an adult. The only card game I play is Uno.

No, not standard decks of cards, but we play the hell out of SkipBo. We have that game at home, at the cabin and in a bag we take when we travel.

Our family plays Canasta (hand and foot), Crib (cribbage), and Sticks (a form of rummy), all with "normal" decks of cards. Canasta and Sticks require multiple decks, depending on how many people are playing.

We play a few, but play them frequently. Russian Rummy, 7 and Golf are our favorites. We play a couple hands of Russian Rummy just about every week.

My family plays a card game called Pennies from Heaven that takes a bunch of regular decks of cards. In fact, I have a tin full of card decks solely for this purpose. My understanding is that it's a cross between canasta, Michigan rummy, and one other game I can't recall. It's all I grew up playing, my grandparents hosted or attended card parties every Saturday night and always played this, and everyone in my family learned to play it. I remember they tried to play Liverpool rummy for a while, but eventually returned to this game. I have a lot of fond memories of staying with my grandparents, filling in on hands when people needed breaks, and popping popcorn for everyone. I still play it when family gets together.

Card games are like all we do at my in-laws house to pass the time. Their family game is Canasta, with some strange rules that are known as "Great-Grammy's rules." My family game is a 5 hand Rummy game we call Crummy Rummy. I introduced it to the in-laws, and they love and all play it even when I'm not there. When I don't feel like playing, they play Hearts, and occasionally we play Bridge. I am not great at remembering which cards have been taken in tricks so those aren't my favorite.

Pinochle if I can find people to play with. It’s both a ton of fun for me, and sentimental.
I was in the Army lol I I’m deadly at Spades. And dominos.
I love Rummy, and Euchre, and chess.
Anything that takes skill and strategy are my favorites.

We are a big gaming family.
Theme, story, artwork, and beautiful components are a big deal to us when we play, though, so we have no interest in a deck of cards.

We started Ds with 5 card Crummy Rummy, which became 7 card Dummy Rummy, and then 9 card Bummy Rummy, and finally proper 11 card Mummy Rummy - called Mummy Rummy, because I taught Dh and then he taught ds. We play a lot of Rummy. I also like Egyptian Train Rummy, but only play that when visiting with my parents. Dh and Ds play poker and crazy 8s all the time.

Canasta and Sticks require multiple decks, depending on how many people are playing. We play those too. My sister and I started playing canasta at family gatherings when she was too little to remember spades and clubs, she called them shovels and frillies. We called them at for years, when I started playing games with my inlaws I had a hard time remembering spades and clubs. I have the sticks my grandpa made, as well has a homemade 5 in a row/one eyed jack game board. With the inlaws we have played so much Hearts over the years. Or bid whist or elimination.

As a kid, we played 31-scat (same game called by two different names). If it was all adults, they played for dimes. If kids were included we played for pennies. It was the 70's, and we love getting extra pennies for penny candy.
Played a few times as a young adult, when Family was visiting. Haven't in about 25 years.
As a kid, monopoly, life, battleship, checkers, and yahtzee were the favorites. Nowadays, if I were to play, scrabble is my favorite. I also still love monopoly and yahtzee. And of course, as an Aunt, I'm always willing to play candy land and chutes and ladders.

When we got together with my Dad's side of the family, the Bridge table was always up with my parents, grandparents and aunt and uncle taking turns. In the evening all of us including cousins would play Blackout a lot because you could do it with lot of people.
On my mom's side of the family we always seemed to play for money. Either 31 or Rummoli.

Yes. Huge card game player here. Crib, 500, Canada, rummy, hearts etc all on regular rotation. A favourite is a game called Samba which is like a combination of rummy and canasta. Played with 3 decks.
I am a primary school teacher ( grades 5/6) and have been introducing strategy style card games as a warm up for maths. Things like ono 99 or salute. They have loved it and ask for new games regularly. Some kids have started playing them with their families ❤️❤️

My mom hates games (of all kinds) so we never played any growing up. My partner, kids, and I play lots of board & card games but nothing with a standard deck of cards. I think the last time I played a game with a standard deck was in high school when everyone there was obsessed with Egyptian Rat Screw. I don't remember how to play it now, though.

We are a big card playing family. We carry a deck of cards in the car because you never know where and when a card game might break out!
I’ve never known anyone else to play Golf. Seems like we’re forever teaching that to new friends. We’ve learned a bunch from my daughter and her friends - BS, Garbage, EMS.
I grew up playing Hearts, Pounce, Rummy and Euchre with a ton of family of all ages around the table. My holiday memories usually include my mom and aunts playing Pinochle and my dad and uncles playing Poker - drinking and smoking and inappropriate conversation and so much laughing.

We used to play it a lot when I lived in Michigan. I now live in Texas and no one plays it here. In fact, I have an app on my phone to play euchre. It’s quite realistic and I get my fix that way.
