I’ve gotten clearance from my husband to buy a French purse in Paris. I said it would be a few thousand dollars. He said OK. What would you get? I have until April to decide. And don’t suggest Hermes. That’s waaay too much.

Celine has some beautiful bags. What sort of style do you like? I have plenty of totes and regular shoulder bags. I’m liking smaller styles now for everyday use.

I recently got a small YSL crossbody that I really like. Chanel is a good choice too though!

I said it would be a few thousand dollars. I'm guessing you are thinking in the $2,000 to $5,000 range? Are you wanting a designer that is easily recognized here in the US, or are you willing to consider ones that you don't see coming and going? Neither is wrong, just a personal preference. There are some excellent lines to consider that don't charge Hermés prices. Cartier - DH gave DD one last year for Christmas and it is stunning. She likes that it is not an 'overdone' bag that everyone has. CelineSaint Laurent (YSL)Chanel - The Mini 2.55 bag (the iconic Chanel bag) will most likely fit your budget. The 2.55 and large 2.55 are quite pricey now. There are other lines to look at tough. If you are looking for a tote, consider Goyard or Moreau. These articles will should help you get your Paris shopping research going. They are from a blog written by a French woman. The 25 Best French Handbag Brands to Have on Your Radar The Best of French Fashion BrandsBe sure to visit the Paris pharmacies and check out the skincare lines. It's not like going to a CVS or Walgreens here. They have great lines and salespeople who are knowledgeable. It makes great little gifts for friends/family back home as well.

Hands down, Cartier or Chanel for me.

The crossbody I loved was a Bottega Veneta one but it was triple the price of the YSL bag!
But so beautiful. Maybe look at that brand. Though that’s Italian not French. I think you really just need to go to the stores and try some on ~ something will grab you.

Thanks. And yes, about the price range. And I love color so I gravitate towards colorful handbags.

If Hermes is not an option I'd recommend the Goyard Anjou GM. It's one of my favourite bags. My husband paid just under 3K so within your budget. If you're looking for something more recognizable you can never go wrong with Cartier or Chanel. Good luck and share what you get. I'm excited for you.😊

Are you going to a specific, authentic, shop in Paris to purchase? Shops in Paris may sell imitations or lesser quality products. It's the appeal of the real deal for tourists. Just because in Paris, doesn't mean it's real. I would consider the authenticity of a specific shop and not the cost/brand. Just curious, what's the appeal of purchasing a high-end purse in Paris vs. where you live now?

I dunno, I might chicken out…I’m not used to buying big-ticket stuff for myself. And I would go to the specific store like Chanel or whatever.

If you shop in one of the brand boutiques or a high end department store, they are going to be authentic. Most of the imitations or fakes are sold on the streets or in markets.

Our college group, got suckered into purchasing "real" leather jackets in Italy, where they would help us put multiple credit card purchases under $300 to get us to purchase their product and wouldn't be tagged. This was many years ago, but not sure why a purse purchase in Paris is different than in the US? I don't think there will be a price difference and won't you have to claim it returning to the US?

Maybe- but why can't you get that experience in the current market where you live? I would go for more of a dining, food experience in Paris. Customer service in Paris doesn't guarantee a great experience. I guess it does depend on their reputation and history of purchases.

Chanel has had major price increases that put them nearly on par with Hermes. Availability is an issue as well. I’d check out Goyard, Celine, Dior and YSL. Goyard doesn’t sell online in any capacity, so it might be fun to get a “hard to get” bag from them.
In the last several months, with the USD and the Euro nearly equivalent, luxury goods actually end up being less expensive in Europe. Of course, who knows what the exchange rate will be in April.

The current exchange rate is very favorable to shopping in Europe currently. Additionally, you file for a VAT refund when you leave the country. Both of these lower the price.

Personally, I live in Germany, so going to Paris to go shopping isn't that big a deal. Also, one can go shopping, buy a nice Chanel bag and then go out for a nice dining experience - the two are not mutually exclusive.

Fine dining in Paris doesn’t guarantee a great experience either 🤣🤣 exactly! So what is the experience of buying a purse in Paris vs. US or any where else? It's still the brand. What would be the experience in Paris? I could understand if someone has explored the world for a specific purse and have experienced the thrill at a specific place. Can you expand?

For me, it would be more meaningful to buy a bag in Paris than just order it up online because…it’s Paris. There will be memories associated with a significant purchase in Paris that will make it special. It’s springtime in Paris, you’re shopping with your husband, you can browse in the boutiques and pop into a cafe for a glass of wine. It’s a lot more memorable than whipping out to the mall to hit Neiman Marcus before you have to get the kids from school and start dinner!

I buy a luxury purse (or jewelry) at almost every international place I visit (if they are available). I can look at each purse and tell you where I bought it...almost like it's a souvenir. It's part of the trip for me. (and yes, the items are often less expensive bought internationally than if purchasing from a US boutique)
