I have this argument with a female relative in her 70s all the time. She thinks that I am too old to have long hair, and I should cut it shorter. Not necessarily short-short, but maybe to my shoulders short. She thinks that women in their 50s and older should have short hair, because long hair drags their faces down. She is of the generation where most women cut their hair short when they got to about 30 or 40. I actually think that short hair can sometimes make a woman look older. A number of years ago, when we were in our 40s, a friend and I were stalking old acquaintances on Facebook. We saw photos of a woman we used to know, who is our age, and she had cut her hair short. Both of us thought that it made her look 10 years older. I have said to my relative that times and fashions change, and women these days are far more likely to keep their hair long(ish) for a longer time. And the next generation even more so..... I cannot imagine my daughter or any of her friends cutting their hair when they're in their 50s or 60s. None of my friends have cut their hair short yet, except the ones who always had short hair. And before anyone says it, yes I know this isn't true for all people. Some people probably do look younger with short hair. If you are in your 50s or older, and still have hair longer than shoulder length, when do you think you'll cut it? Or will the world be full of 80yo women with long hair in the next few decades?

I think that both long hair and short hair can age someone, and it’s more about the specific style than then length.
I’m 45, and I have a lob right now. 3 years ago I had a pixie. I don’t think I look younger now than I did then. I got my first pixie in high school, so long hair is never something I’ve particularly associated with youth.

59, hair past shoulders. Dyed brown with highlights and low lights.
I think I look younger with this style. But it’s been roughly the same since my 20s.
I do see women with short, permed helmet, looking styles, that I think look older. I think it’s interesting that my grandma’s short, permed gray helmet isn’t around much and people my age with out the helmet looks so much younger than grandma at this age.

I was just thinking about this today. I'm 51 and my hair is below my shoulders. I've been growing it out from a short bob. I die it brownish-red. However......I learned how to style my hair in the 80s. I'm ready for the banana clip to come back. LOL I'm worried that I'm aging myself because of the way I style it. I just can't with the straight and center part. I also put eyeliner on my top and bottom lid.
Sigh -- I'm so old.

I think the notion of long hair automatically being aging is passed…or should be. Like many things in the same vein, there’s no ‘should’ .
Can it be aging, yes, if it doesn’t suit you, is perhaps the same shape it’s been for the last 30 years…it can appear that someone is hanging onto what looked good a few decades ago. But is it always aging, no, of course not.
I think it’s a great idea to look at things like your hairstyle with fresh eyes every now and then and adjust if you think it’ll look better… because it is easy to get into a rut with our hair, make up, clothing style etc.
But if you rock long hair, then great! And I think yours really suits you 😊

In general, no. But of course it depends on the person and the hair. I have long blond hair (which yes does require a lot of expensive maintenance lol) half way down my back and I’m told I look young.

I have long hair and I’m 52. I think as long as your hair is well cared for and styled, long hair on older women is great. However, when it’s gray or partially gray, long and wiry and frizzy with no discernible style, it’s terrible. You know the look… aging hippie with grey hair in a centre part and long loose braid, half falling out and really scraggly looking?? That is going to make you look really old.

I'm 58 and I my hair is just past my shoulders, and I color all the grays away. I think it works for me and I can't imagine cutting my hair short and not coloring it.
I love the way you look in your avatar and I wouldn't cut that beautiful hair of yours.

I think it’s person specific. I look older with really short hair. I need some length. Katie Perry is a great example if someone who was aged by a pixie. I swear it added a good 15-20 years to her. Some people are aged by long hair. I definitely need to watch my length because it does age me and makes my face longer. Was not an issue in my youth.
I’m currently in a bob that is just below chin length, but doesn’t touch my shoulders. I also stopped coloring my hair so I’m totally grombre. I look younger with colored hair, but I’m not going back, I don’t care.

Thick shiny hair looks "young" and thin dry hair looks "older" because that's how biology works, no matter what the length.
I got a lot of compliments on my longish blonde hair but I cut it all off because I wanted to grow out my undercut, so now it's just below the chin. Plus I wasn't sure if the compliments were genuine 🤣 until I heard the complaints when I cut it off. My hair is not especially thick, it's fine, but I keep it shiny and healthy as possible with highlights and lowlights.
It will be a long time before I'm ready to quit dying it and go to my natural ashy brown and gray, which is very unflattering with my pale complexion.

AussieMeg You look beautiful in your avatar. I love your hair in it. Don’t cut your hair because of your relative. You will regret it. I have a friend in her early 70’s and she has long hair. It fits her perfectly.

I’m 55 and my hair is the longest I’ve had it as an adult. I get compliments (including from 3rd grade girls so that counts for a lot lol) I do make sure it styles away from my face because I do find it drags me down if it just hangs.
I think style/cut have more to do with looking older/younger than the actual length.
What I personally find aging on my peers is really, really dark hair colour. (And eyes ringed in black liner) To each their own though as long as you like it go for it.

I think it's more about whether the style looks dated and whether it suits your hair and face type than about long vs. short.
Longer hair on me looks thin and stringy, and drags the eye downward making everything on me look droopy and tired. Shorter hair is much more youthful on me personally, but I'm careful to keep up with styling trends and not wear 80s helmet hair or anything similar.
But there are lots of women my age who look great with longer hair. The key is just to keep it fresh and current.

AussieMeg Unless you asked your relative's opinion, what she said was impolite. Nobody enjoys hearing what's "wrong" with them. Of course, these intrusive people will say, "I was only trying to help!" as if they're the wise purveyors of beauty advice. The old "rules' have, I believe wisely, changed to reflect changing lifestyles and lifespans. Besides, one should always go by what looks good on her and makes her feel good. Somebody telling you that your hair needs to be short at a certain age is probably jealous, because you (& your hair) look great.

Adding: I was forced to stop coloring my hair & cut it short for health reasons. It makes me sad every time I get ready to go out or have guests. Enjoy yours as long as you can!

I love your hair. You look very fresh (or your avatar does!). I have hair about the same length as you. I have also heard the same thing you have. I know what looks right on me and that is enough for me. You should try what one of my girls said to me when I said I couldn't watch Emily in Paris because Emily's eyebrows made me a bit kooky. She was horrified. She said, "Mom!!! Are you body shaming?!!!" And then I did feel a little shamed because I really try very hard not to make comments like that. In brief, wear what you want. And have the eyebrows you want.

I'm 58, and yup, it's long. And I don't feel like it's aging me. I have a little bit of grey at my temples, but not enough for me to do anything about. All of my friends comment on my lack of grey hair and that they feel like I'm aging better than they are. I'm not opposed to cutting mine short as I wore a pixie thru most of my youth and again in my late 20s thru my late 30s. I simply find the maintenance of a pixie to be daunting. Both of my older sisters, 63 and 64, have beautiful long hair and both are completely grey. One of them has silvery grey, the other is platinum. I don't think it is aging them. My little sister, 53, doesn't have much grey, but her long hair does age her. Hers looks best above her shoulders.I AussieMeg, your hair is beautiful and beautiful on you, your relative is just jealous. 😊

I have pictures of my mom at my age and she looked so much older than I do. I feel like my mom probably grew up in the same generation (or older) that OP's relative. Her hair was short with a perm. My hair is super healthy (and super straight) and every time I have someone new cut my hair, they tell me it is so soft and healthy and not to cut it. I keep it past my shoulders to about 4-5 inches longer than that depending on the season or how I feel about the time it takes to dry. Hair is super personal and I think that you know when you are getting older when you feel like you can tell people what to do with their style.

I don’t think so. I agree with others that it has to do with the cut. I’m 61 and my hair is just past my shoulders, and I quit coloring it over 2years ago. Honestly I’m not thrilled with my natural color, but it just feels so much healthier!

I think it's definitely one of those "it depends" things. I know people who have long hair that looks amazing and others where I think maybe they would suit a shorter style. It usually comes down to how much they look after it and whether the style suits their face. A workmate is 70, very thin and has really long hair - she never gets it cut and its a frizzy mess most of the time falling in her face. For her I do think it drags her face down but she might not look after shorter hair either LOL. She loves it though so who am I to judge? Your hair is gorgeous AussieMeg, don't get it cut unless you really want to. I love my short hair and after a Covid related attempt to grow it, I reverted back because I felt it made me look older. I think the concept of women not having long hair after 50 is very outdated and probably reverts back to a time where women didn't the autonomy over their hair/bodies that they do now. When I cut my hair from shoulder length, lot of people asked what my hubby would think? I said he knows that it is none of his business because it's MY hair.

I always ask my stylist to make sure my style is "age" appropriate and suits my hair tone/face type and coloring - she makes color adjustments each appt which I love because its fun and changes things up. Honestly, it's your hair to do with what makes you feel good. My 83 year old mom has kept long hair until she went through Chemo and is on her way to growing it out again. I think it brings her joy and who would want to rob her of that? For me, the main thing I care about is getting my stylists perspective on the style and look because she has a better eye that I do.

All the women in my family have long hair...my 75 year old mom, her 70 and 60 year old sisters. My sister (55) and myself (58). I don't think any of us look our age.
A friend just recently cut her hair in a pixie. She dyes it bright blue. And, after cutting it was complaining that people kept assuming she was her son's grandmother, not his mom. That didn't happen before the hair cut. She doesn't really care as she knows she's not his grandma and rocks the bright blue.

I think that oftentimes as women age they don't keep up their hair with regular trims and styling....I know I sometimes am guilty of this....and THIS is what ages a woman more than anything.

This is my thoughts as well. Any cut or style that is not cared for and maintained can make anyone look older. Some days when I am just at home I don't always style my hair and every time I walk past a mirror I think "I'm looking older today and should have styled my hair" and it is not pixie length but on the short side.

I used to share the opinion of your relative but I have changed my mind in the last couple of years. I've noticed women on TV that are older with long hair and it works. Genie Frances on General Hospital is one. A few years ago I would have said, she should cut her long straight hair. I now think it makes her look younger.
It's more what works for the shape of the face. I think color makes more difference than anything. Some women can pull off gray hair and look gorgeous but it ages most of us. I worked with a woman for years whose hair turned prematurely gray due to a medical condition. She looked fantastic, maybe because she grayed at a young age. I don't know. I just think it makes most people look older. There are so many options for hairstyles and colors, there is something for everyone. You just have to experiment.
I've recently grown my hair out a little and I like it much better on me. I do think I looked a bit younger with my shorter style but I think I look prettier with it in the current style. Anyway, I like it and DH seems to give me more compliments lately and that's all I care about.
