I agree. If this was her husband who was bragging about just saying no and that being the end of the conversation then we’d call him an ass for not trying to come to a compromise. My compromise is a ring camera and light detection wyze camera and park cars in the garage, so no need for the light on. Well, then this is all very confusing. Why does he want the light on? Does he hate you and want you to be bothered?

I leave my front porch light on all night, every night. I live at the end of a dark court and I like for there to be some light out there. But my guest room (formerly kid’s room) faces right out to the front of the house, and when my DD is visiting the light bothers her, even though she grew up with it on all night, every night, so I turn it off at bedtime when she’s here. Does the porch light penetrate your sleeping room or to other neighbors? Is there light pollution for other neighbors? This may be why I want the light off at night as a neighbor across our green space keeps their light on which shines directly into our bedroom for the last 15 years and we have kept our curtains closed. Feels like it's a burning death stare, lol. I have this issue as well. Our neighbors have put up fairly large string lights around their fence, and they look fabulous. But when they forget to turn them off our bedroom is much brighter. Our homes/neighborhood are built to help lessen light pollution so it really makes a big difference.

As I look out my window, I see 6 houses around me, with no front porch lights on. Guess I'm the doofus for complaining. Doesn't it depend on the community?

I keep front and back lights on.
The sconces at the garage door and back porch come on at sunset and go off at day break. The one at my door does not so it stays on all day.
The light above the man door on my garage at the side of the house is on motion.
For me, it's a safety issue. If they bother neighbors they can get thicker curtains. If it bothered someone in my house, I'd fix it with curtains.

I guess that every neighborhood is different. I just looked out of my window, and several neighbors have outside lights on, but most don’t. I have motion detector lights outside, and we have several street lights. So this neighborhood, which is pretty safe, does not have a lot of outside lights on. I don’t know, but it is a safe bet that at least part of the street has doorbell cams.
I do keep several lights on inside-downstairs.

We keep the alarm set to home on every night. If you don’t have an alarm, I’ll bet your husband’s concern is safety.

We have a 'dark skies' ordinance, so technically we are supposed to have our lights off after a certain hour. Unfortunately, our neighbors don't really adhere to it on a regular basis and YES, the light bothers my sleep. Hell, even the light on the clock bothers my sleep which is why it points away from me. I have been known to cover lights in hotel rooms (my gawd, there are a LOT of lights in hotel rooms) with towels, etc. I always stuff a towel along the bottom of the door in hotels; that bloody strip is like a beacon!

Does anyone else have this sense of light disrupting your sleep, even though a door could block out most of the light? It's just this aura of it being on. I have absolutely no problem sleeping with light in the room. I have two floor to ceiling windows in my bedroom- one two-stories tall because of a cathedral ceiling. I don't have any curtains on them. There is quite a bit of light all night, because of various lights around the condo.

We always keep our exterior lights on at night. We have a one-story home and it’s trendy here to have recessed can lights under the eaves all along the front of the house rather than just porch and garage lights.
Those lights shine directly into any front-facing bedrooms, of course, but room-darkening shades and curtains take care of the problem.

We leave the light over our garage door on, but usually turn off the front porch light before we go to bed. Neighbors on either side of us have motion detector lights in their driveways, but other than that our street is very dark at night. Very few people leave their front porch lights on.

I grew up out in the country and we had an automatic yard light that came on at sunset and turned off at sunrise. It was on a utility pole outside my room so I got used to having light shine in while I'm sleeping.
My husband cant have any light coming in the room at night. He's always fussing about it. Lol
We keep our front light on at night but our bedroom is in the back of the house so it doesn't affect him. No neighbors across the street because it's a park.

So every safety expert and police officer is wrong. Good thing we have you to let us know! For our house, there's a street light and houses across the street, about 50% keep their lights off and all the neighbors park their car in the driveway/street so they can have thugs mess with their cars. We keep ours in the garage. There's nothing for someone to mess with and the activation camera would notify me. If my DH said no to me, not sure what I'd do as neither one of us has just responded that way until last night. There was no bickering as we have discussed this many times. If everyone around you parks their cars in the driveway and yours are in the garage, you probably won’t have people just messing with your cars. BUT, you may have people who think no one is home at your house since there is no car in the driveway, and thus, your house is a good target for a robbery.

Yes!!! I have found someone like me with the damn lights at hotels. We don’t leave our lights on but we do have a ring alarm system so a light comes on when someone enters our perimeter. However, we live in a very small rural town and no one on our street leaves their light on.
