I started treatment for TMJD in the fall using ortho appliances and I am having tremendous success. All of my TMJ pain is gone as the appliances are moving my bottom jaw forward and holding it in the right position. I’ve always had an over bite which these appliances have completely corrected. It’s helping some with my chronic lifelong neck pain. My dentist feels a key piece of the treatment is having my tongue tie clipped. It’s not an extreme tongue tie but she said tongues that can’t move freely are directly linked to neck pain. I am paying a lot for this treatment so I want to do everything I can to be successful, but I’m super nervous about this frenectomy. She will numb me and do it with a laser right there in the office. She actually said she did her own. She said it will hurt for a week like a mouth sore. I’ve had mouth sores. They’re manageable so I’m not sure why I’m so nervous about this minor procedure. I know they do this laser release often on babies so surely I can handle it. Anyone have any experience having this done as an adult?

DS20 had it done as a baby and again as a teenager. It was tied almost to the tip of his tongue when he was born. When he got braces the Ortho suggested he have it done again. He said it was no big deal.

I haven't had it done, but wouldn't hesitate based on having to have DD go through the procedure at a newborn. I remember our pediatrician equating it to being similar to biting the inside of your mouth in terms of how quickly it heals. DH and I were way more traumatized than DD, who nursed and fell asleep immediately.

One of my girls had it done when she was 6 without any issue. I would say for what you have been through and are doing that it would totally be worth it.

It wont be fun, but if it needs to be done, Id have it done. I had to have surgery on my tongue a few years ago. Any time you are having surgery on something that you move a LOT, it doesnt feel great.

My youngest had it done when she was about 13 or 14. I don't recall any problems apart from the obvious short term soreness and I don't even think that was that bad.
