Basically, the scammer Zelle'd her too much money and asked her to send back the difference. UGH!! Of course, she should have seen the red flags. She lost $400. Straight out of her bank account. She filed a report with her bank. They said she probably won't get her money back. Is there anything else she can do? Sooo sad!! People suck!!

that's awful! scammers suck. i'm sorry that happened to your daughter. i wish i could recommend some options for your daughter.
this thread makes me worried for a FB purchase i made a couple of days ago. the seller wanted me to send him the money through CashApp. i don't use cashapp and some reviews showed that some people had a time getting a refund when the seller flaked. even the app had a disclaimer that they will TRY to refund the money but it is not guaranteed. wait, what?
i insisted on using paypal and hopefully i will have greater protection in case the transaction goes south. plus i used my credit card through paypal so i have that extra layer of going through the CC company if need be. i hate that i have to approach some online purchases with a fear of getting scammed because of stories like yours. it's just so prevalent. ugh.

Dd had never used Zelle. Scammer said they didn't have venmo, only Zelle. Dd set Zelle up on the spot and wasn't familiar with it. Ugh! Then after daughter sent the overage back, the funds sent by scammer never showed up and scammer's transaction cancelled. Or something like that. ETA: From the beginning of the conversation they had dd's email address bc the scammer needed that to send the money to to purchase the item. Dd received an email from "zelle" that wasn't really from zelle stating that she had received a payment of too much money from scammer.

Sorry that happened. That sucks.
I’ve had several people attempt this when I’ve tried to sell on marketplace.
Lots of red flags. I told all the them to go F themselves.
They say they can only pay X amount, an amount much higher than you’re asking for the item, because you don’t have a “business account” with Zelle. They then want you to give them the “change”.
So, maybe your DD was selling an item for $100. The scammer said they had to pay $500 because she didn’t have a business account. Can they trust to be reimbursed the extra $400? Your daughter reimbursed them through her Zelle account, but they never actually sent her any money.
You even get an email that looks like it’s from Zelle, but it’s not. There are telltale signs on the email. (Weird font, your FB profile name instead of the name on your bank account if they differ.)
Exact change only, cash only, or (what I’m doing now) steer clear of FB marketplace altogether.

While I’m sorry she got scammed, this is literally the classic original Zelle scam, so it’s a little shocking to me people still don’t understand how this works.

Zelle is actually a really good method that goes through banks, and I hate that people have used it to scam people. The Marketplace Zelle scams are abundant, though. Make sure that she reports it to FB and in the future, learn about the different scams www.rd.com/article/zelle-scams/

awww I'm sorry that happened to her. I have heard of this but I still don't understand how it works exactly. Can someone explain it to me in words of one syllable? I use Zelle through my bank (it's a link on my account page after I've signed in) to send money to my kids, and the money goes immediately to them. No "pending" involved. But maybe that's because we're all using the same bank?

That is an expensive lesson to learn! It’s an old scam that makes its rounds in new ways. The first time I saw it, scammers had “accidentally” sent a check to someone that was too large and asked them to wire back the extra. By the time the check bounced, it was too late.

I've run into people attempting the Google voice scam when selling items on FB Marketplace. I find it pretty easy to spot these folks through from the start. Here's how the ones I have encountered have worked. They message you (FB Messenger) in a "group" that they have renamed and added a photo to from your listing. First question is generally always "Is this item still available?" Then they want your phone number to call or text. The renaming the message thread always tips me off through to click on their name - it's invariably a sham account with no posts or info. I just block and move on.

That really sucks. I am so skeptical about so many things online. She will definitely be so much more careful now.
Every once in a while, my husband will ask me if something sounds legit. It almost never is online when people want to do something out of the ordinary.
I enjoy watching YouTube videos of people scamming the scammers. If nothing else, they are tying up their time to scam other people.

I'm so sorry this happened to her, unfortunately it is a common scam for someone to send too much money and request a refund only to find out the money they supposedly sent wasn't any good - how sad for your DD, that is a lot of money to lose I hate crooks !!

UGH, I use zelle frequently, but always with people I know. I guess one thing to remember if ever asked for a money back to just say as soon as I confirm it is in my account I can return the extra.
Thank you for sharing.

I’d consider that to be a huge red flag every time. That is my thought also. If we agree upon a price and you send me more than agreed upon, I am going to wonder what is happening. You have to review it before hitting send. If you send me extra it is going to take me a couple days to get your money back to you. Just saying.
