Just curious. I saw a video of Italian people on their cell phones talking with their hands. It got me wondering. Do you think this is a learned behavior or inherited? Maybe cultural? Do your family members do this? Did you grow up with people who did? Do you notice this behavior in other people or is it even on your radar? I do not talk with my hands. In fact, I am not very animated at all when I speak and I'm afraid I might have resting bitch face also, so I have that working for me.

I don’t necessarily talk with my hands, but my hands are rarely still. I could probably use a fidget spinner. And I’m like you Monica. I’m not a very animated person when talking. I have the intonation of a dull professor.

I do talk with my hands by nature, but I have an awareness of that due to training and experience as a public speaker. I'm able to override my natural tendency when I need to. In most familial and social situations, I don't bother. But for 'business' purposes of any kind, I do.
I do notice a lot of people gesturing wildly in their cars all by themselves. I assume they are on cell phone calls and are hand talkers.

Yes, and it is a characteristic that is obvious enough that I am often ribbed about it or it is mentioned by family and friends.
Very true. However if you see me driving with hands flailing I could also be singing (or “talking” to various drivers around me😉). 😄

I’m part Italian and yes, I do. Especially if it’s a topic I’m particularly passionate about.

I don’t talk with my hands at all, and I’m struggling to think of anyone I know who does.

Interesting. Do you think there is a connection with this to being extroverted or introverted? I am introverted for the record.

It’s part of who I am and I’m not interested in being an automaton to adhere to what (mostly men) deem “professional.” I’ve done just fine in my career, so not inclined to make a change at this point. I don’t make HUGE gestures but I’m definitely animated with both my hands and face.

I’m kind of in the middle but lean toward being more introverted than extroverted. I would classify myself as an introvert, not on the extreme side but definitely more introvert than middle or extrovert. I am French Canadian and we have a lot of hand talkers. I had a very Italian family that babysat me (and was like a 2nd family) for all my childhood.

I definitely talk with my hands and tend to be an expressive person in general, especially when in situations with people I know well. Like busy , it's part of who I am and I don't see a huge need to change. As for personality type, I am introverted in new situations and with people I don't know well. Once I get to know you though, all bets are off and I am extroverted.

I don’t. But my husband is Italian and does. I have a system in my car that responds to hand gestures. Like thumbs up and the volume goes up. There are about 12 commands. Needless to say he is always accidentally setting off something in my car.

I usually don’t. The only time is when I am trying to explain or describe something. But, not like the Italians do. And I am an introvert.

Not usually. About the only time I do, is to use finger quotations to emphasize something I am saying.

Well, yes, because I'm Deaf and I use American Sign Language to communicate. LOL I know that was not what you meant.
But now that I think about it, would I gesture a lot if I didn't use ASL? My family doesn't so I'm inclined to think not.

I do. I’m an extreme introvert. Absolutely no Italian heritage. Actually I’m mostly British. My DH absolutely detests that I do it and will grab my hands to stop me. I’m getting better at not using my hands, but will occasionally lapse. It is what it is. Frankly, there are worse things I could do.

I do. I don't know if it's a cultural thing (Black) or a regional thing (NYC) but I talk with my hands and so do 90% of the people I know.

Yes - I definitely do.
And my Sicilian husband? Uh, he (and his siblings) do this tap thing to get your attention and then their hands never stop moving.

I gesture with my hands (and facial expressions) to accent some of what I’m saying. So my hands are not moving the whole time I’m talking, but I’ll use them with certain words if that makes sense.
I am an extroverted introvert.

I didn’t realize I did until my daughters pointed it out recently. Apparently, I’m fond of doing that sort of “quote, unquote” motion with my hands when I’m describing things. I had no idea!

You guys are funny! I must say, I do find myself fascinated by people who use their hands to talk. Maybe that's why so many public speakers are trained to use their hands -- it's attention-getting for sure! Lord have mercy! Have you seen how Arabs talk? ?? Hand Signs that Arabs Use All The TimeI could have voiced over this video myself. I see these on a daily basis! LOL The most important one that is NOT there is how most Arab moms will quickly take off their slipper/flip flop and shake it at whoever (mostly children)! Back talk once the shoe is raised is just a death wish at that point!

Born and raised on Long Island and I definitely talk with my hands, even though I’ve lived away from the City for almost 50 years! And I’m Irish/Scottish/German, no Italian in my heritage, but had lots of Italian friends and neighbors growing up.

I would tone it down in a crowded situation so that I don't wack someone in the face, but I don't get why it would be a bad thing to do. Well, not crazy-lady-waving with her hands over her head, but a little animation isn't bad. My grandfather used to say that if you tied my hands down, I wouldn't be able to talk. And he was the same. He was French, so there you go.

Not really, but I tend to reach out and touch people when I'm laughing or being animated - and I try not to do that.
