This gem is available on DVD. We watch it every year. And I think it came out in the 80s. Was on HBO. ETA: Nope, you were right. 1977. We were overseas then and I didn't see it until we moved back to the states in the 80s. We love that movie.

I love, love, love Emmett Otter! My sisters and I used to watch it on TV and we were teenagers in the late 70s but we all just loved it. I have it on VHS and try to watch it every year but my kids think it's totally hokey so I usually have to watch it alone.

I remember it - as a kid I was never that impressed. I bet I would like it better now, though.

Have you checked YouTube? I'm almost positive that I watched it with DD last year online somewhere.

Thank you! Now I know what we'll be watching for our "have a picnic dinner in the living room and watch a Christmas movie" night!

Emmet Otter is the best Christmas special of all time. As kids, my brother and I watched it as much as we could when it was on HBO (in the days before VCRs). Now we both own it on VHS and DVD. I can recite the whole thing by heart and annoy my son I just love it that much. Thanks for letting me share my love of Emmet with others who appreciate him too

I used to look forward to watching it every year. Many years ago my DH found it on DVD and ordered it for me. Love it!

We had the book, but I don't know that I've seen the program. You must! It is too freakin' cute! The first time I saw it was one of the first Christmases when I was allowed to stay up later than my sisters & cousin and it was on HBO late at nite. Don't ask me why I remember that so vividly, but I do and it has been a favorite of mine ever since. I introduced my boys to it on video and we now have it on DVD. We sing along w/all the songs and my husband just loves Chuck ("I'm not hungry, I'm HUNGRY!") - don't ask me why. Love it, love it, love it!!!

It's in the right time frame for us to have watched it, so I'm sure we did, I just don't remember it the way I do Rudolph, or the year without a Santa claus and the like

If you have the DVD, you HAVE to watch the out takes. OMG they are so funny. When the drum rolls out of the music store they are trying to get it to land just perfectly. One time it hits the Mom otter and she says, "Sweet Jesus!"

We watch it once a year. Love it. When DS #1 was a tiny baby, DH used to walk around the house humming "When the River Meets the Sea" to him.

Love that movie! Love the John Denver and the muppets Christmas CD too, which has the river meets the sea song. Jim Hensen was a wonderful gift to humanity!

Love it! I found it a few years ago at Barnes and Noble and couldn't wait to show the kids and they HATED it . It made me so sad. But I still make them watch.

This is one of my favorites! I'll have to check out the video on YouTube because the DVD version I have has all the Kermit the Frog bits cut out. Something to do with copyright.
