Our oven/stove blew up on Saturday. We've ordered a new one and at the same time decided to upgrade our other kitchen appliances. The current appliances are all builder grade Frigidaire installed by the previous owners when they sold the house to us - 17 years ago.
Our current fridge is a stainless steal, side-by-side. The ice maker/water dispenser is broken and one of the inside trim pieces is broken.
In our garage we have the first fridge we bought. It's a Maytag and 27 years old. White with the freezer on top. It is also working fine.
I had just assumed we would keep the Maytag...it seems to be a workhorse (in the "they don't make them like that anymore" category.) Dh is thinking we keep the Frigidaire as it's 10 years younger and he likes the freezer on the side vs. on the top. I'm worried that the side-by-side model isn't wide enough (can I brine my Thanksgiving turkey in there?) We do have a smaller chest freezer in the garage (pandemic impulse purchase). And, it's it's just the two of us at home now.
Total first world problem, but what one would you keep in the garage and why?

Id keep the newer one and let the older one go.

I'd be inclined to keep the older one, but I am also the person who uses a 40+ year old fridge as my everyday one, and we sold my DH's much newer fridge when we moved in together as his was in poorer condition.

I’d be tempted to keep both if you have space in the garage/basement. If not, I’d keep the Maytag.

Check to see if the newer one will fit in the same space in the garage. The older one might use more electricity but is made to last. We had an avocado green fridge in the basement for years, it sure looked heavy when the guys carried it out. Will the pot that you brine the turkey fit in your current fridge?

Excellent suggestion, I will try that.
We would have space, but really no need for two. It's just the two of us. The garage fridge mostly holds drinks, except around the holidays or if we are hosting a larger gathering.
Yes, it would fit in the same space.

I would want to keep the old one because I don't like side-by-side fridges. The only thing about the older one is that it is probably not up to the new energy-efficiency standards.

If our garage fridge fit in the kitchen, I am sure we would have too at least for awhile...I think having a white fridge and stainless everything else would bother me. But, the space for the kitchen fridge can only accommodate a counter-depth fridge.

I feel I’m with you and would lean toward keeping the white one. But would also question myself. Sorry I’m not much help lol

You can brine turkey in side by side. I would keep newer fridge. Even though old one is workhorse it might be running on borrowed time.

Do you use the refrigerator or the freezer of the extra one the most? I have a fridge/freezer in my garage that I purchased specifically because it has a large freezer on the bottom and the top can be used as either a refrigerator OR a freezer with the flip of a switch. I tend to need the freezer the most because I almost always cook double when I cook and then freeze single servings for use on the days that I'm not feeling well. I never know how a day will go. I may feel fantastic and be able to cook or I may end up in bed all day in severe pain and the ability to have a home-cooked meal in a matter of minutes from the freezer makes all the difference. If I didn't have a freezer meal, I know me. I would just not eat until I felt better. But, around the holidays if I am entertaining, I want more refrigerator room. That is when I will put everything into the bottom freezer section and flip the switch to use the top as a refrigerator to hold salads and drinks and all the stuff needed for entertaining. I would keep whichever refrigerator you feel the best about keeping and then when it eventually dies, you might want to look at getting a freezer/refrigerator combo like mine if it would suit your needs. It has diamond plate on the exterior and my renter begged me to let him buy it from me. I don't know if they still make my exact one, but I would think something similar is out there. I found the one I have. It is a "Gladiator" and it matches the garage cabinets. I don't have those cabinets, but I really liked the freezer/refrigerator and the ability to make it switch to best suit my needs. It is on big casters that allow me to push it forward to clean under it. www.garagepower.com/index.php?moduleId=SGW9DWrh&browse=product&p=ylYxIZme

I would keep whichever is the most energy efficient one. (Probably the newer model?)

We tend to use the fridge and freezer equally with our garage fridge.
Energy efficiency is a good point though.

Keep both in the garage but only use one. When that one goes, use the other one.
