Look what arrived today! Im looking forward to making some mushy peas. 😁 I’ve googled how to make them and I see recipes that sugar, cream/milk, and/or butter are optional. Should I add those? And what would you say I should serve with them? I told my dh that we’re having British Night some time next week. Lol. My googling says fish and chips, or a savory pie, are what traditionally goes with mushy peas. What’s the most common way to eat them? Trying to post a photo from Tapatalk but it won’t load. I’ll post this and then see if the photo will work on “edit”. grrr... I can't get the photo to load from Tapatalk. Here's a link to the ones I ordered. Dried Marrowfat Peas

Not from the UK, but I’ve always had them with fish and chips or chicken. Normal things that you’d eat with peas.

We always had fish, chips and mushy peas from the chip shop. No "chip shop" here (especially because in the USA "chips" are potato chips, and your chips are our "french fries", lol) -- But I will buy frozen french fries, and some sort of fish... The fish from fish and chips is breaded, yes? That's easy to buy here also. Although I suspect that none of it will be as good as from a real chip shop.

We used to have a British pub here that made amazing mushy peas. He was British but apparently changed then up a bit and added some Parmesan to them. Served with fish and chips. I really miss them as they closed a few years ago.

I didn't know Gordon Ramsay would ever take shortcuts. lol

Aussie here, I enjoy a good "pie 'n peas". Most bakeries here (at least all the ones I've been to) take the pastry lid off the pie and put the mushy peas in it, then put the top back on. Or you can get a "pie floater" which is the pie on a plate with the peas on the side. My fav is a curry pie with peas. The mushy peas are like the first pic Pjaye posted.
I've never had the peas with fish and chips, but it would be nice too. And yeah - Aussie or British chips are nice and thick, about finger thickness. The thin ones are fries, which are the usual thing at fast food joints.

I come from one of the colonies, too, and we have lots of fish n chip places but I have never heard of these peas. My mother saw herself as English Canadian and never made them but then again she liked tuna noodle casserole.

It would more likely be steak fries or fried wedges (like your chips) or crinkle cut or battered/seasoned, if you're making them at home. Skinny fries like at McDonald's are only good immediately out of a fryer and are not actually the norm that's served here in restaurants or frozen.

Gordon’s mushy peas aren’t real mushy peas, just a sort of alternative with what most people would already have. Yours will be better 😊

This Saturday dinner will be roast chicken, mashed potatoes and marrowfat peas for me and mushy peas for the Mister. Both types from a tin and served with onion gravy. Yum

I always thought "faggots" were other words for pieces of wood or cigarettes over in the UK! They are although cigarettes are just known as fags. If you read books about UK boys' private schools, a younger boy doing tasks for an older boy is known as a fag too. I don't know if the term is still used.

It's long gone now.

One of the first meals we have while in England is fish and chips with mushy peas. When we were there in November, the place we went to served the worst mushy peas ever! No joke, paste would have tasted better. As we looked around, we noticed that no one ate their mushy peas. The fish and chips were outstanding though!

I believe you can buy beer battered fillets here. Ours are in a green box. Gortons? no. that is yellow...

Any American Peas know if we can buy battered frozen fish here you can - they are often labelled beer battered - Aldi has cod. fair warning - deep frying is best for them, air frying is an okay substitute, baking from frozenworks but will not be fish and chips fish Same thing with frozen steak fries

We have them with fish and chips or pie and chips. My local chippie also does a mushy pea fritter which is my go to as I don't like fish. Its basic a ball of mushy peas dipped in batter and deep fried. It's proper lush.

I don't think you need a deep fryer for the fish...just make the same batter and then fry them in a frying pan. We always had battered fish when I was young and no-one owned a deep fryer...you just need to fry it until it's golden brown and crunchy...and make your chips/fries however you normally do.

Van de Kamps has battered fish. I always buy it because I like it much better than breaded.
