I loved that book! I read it over and over. I looked for characters like that in other books I read, the misunderstood hero. I didn’t care for the movie that much because I already had a vision in my head on what the characters looked like. I wonder if I read it now, what I would think of it.

There are very few books in which I want the movie tie-in cover, but the Outsiders was one. If I need a cry, I only have to read the page with Johnny in the hospital. Sniffle. Thank you!

I lived in Tulsa when the movie was made/released. Even before that, we all thought we were special since everyone loved that book and it was oooooohh set in Tulsa. (I mean, hey, it's not like Tulsa was the hotbed of movie or book settings!) We were all really jealous of one girl up the street whose dad did something related to the movie, so she got to meet Matt Dillon. Sigh.
But for real, there's something about the story that is just timeless somehow. I watched it with my cynical, hates everything preteen when he was 11 or 12, and he loved it, too. He even read the book afterwards!
(And yes, it was fun for me to see Tulsa again, as I haven't been back in at least 30 years!)

And I have now remembered playing softball, and how whenever we'd be telling someone to get a homerun, we'd tell them to "Do it for Johnny!"
It was amazing what a different perspective I have on the whole story now as an adult.

Such a great book and film! I lived in Tulsa in the 80’s and remember how exciting it was that they filmed “The Outsiders”, “Tex”, and “Rumble Fish” there.

I think I was in 6th grade when I accidentally stumbled on the book at our public library. It’s the type of book that stays with you forever.
I have a six degrees of separation relationship with the movie. Gray Frederickson, a native Oklahoman, produced the movie, as well as the Godfather movies. He moved back to Oklahoma in the nineties and became good friends with our good friends. We all shared a love of boating and kept our boats at the same lake. We had a lot of fun boating together. Gray recently passed away. What a wonderful legacy he left for his children. His name will ever be linked with a great coming of age movie.

My daughter just read that last year for a school project.. it brought it full circle for me.. and when I said "Stay gold, Ponyboy" she looked at me like I had two heads. Like how does MOM know that? LOL
Although when I was in high school a girl that I used to sit next to insisted on being called Ponyboy. She was pretty weird. lol.. poor thing.

One of the few books that my brother - a committed non-reader at that time - enjoyed as a young teen.
Being a pre-teen/teen girl in the 80s meant being obsessed with The Outsiders. And when we did the poetry unit in my AP Lit class and read some Robert Frost, his street cred was huge when we realized/remembered he'd written Nothing Gold Can Stay. So much adolescent emotion! lol

My bff and I were absolutely obsessed with the Outsiders. Idk how many times I read the book/watched the movie. We could recite the poem from memory for years. My crush was C Thomas Howell back then and she loved Ralph Macchio. But of course we thought all the boys were cute. Rob Lowe has spoken often on his podcast about filming it.

I loved The Outsiders when I read it (graduated HS in the early 90s.) My kids have each had to read it. Usually we like the same books. They hated The Outsiders! I’m friends with their ELA teacher and had mentioned that to her. She said most the kids don’t like it and she wouldn’t be surprised if it falls off the list of books they use before long. So I wonder if this is kids today don’t relate to in the same way many of us obviously did.

I read that book for the first time in 1969. I was 12. I was so amazed when I saw a 50th anniversary edition selling at Costco a few years back. Didn’t seem possible 50 years had passed. Such a special book for me.

When I taught middle school special ed. students we read this book every year in our reading class. They all loved it. I have one student who was so enamored with the book. She is now 26 and will still FB message me about The Outsiders and how I changed her life by introducing her to the book.
I've lost track of how many times I've read it. I tried to get my 17 year old son to read it but he has no interest. he has no idea what he is missing!

Swaze, Dillon, all our 80's hearthrobs. I was so jealous of Diane Lane, so beautiful and got to kiss on Matt Dillon in both Rumble Fish and Outsiders.

I really need to read that book again, I can't remember many of the details. It was one of my favourite books when I was a teenager in the 80s, and was one of the most stolen books from the school library along with Go Ask Alice and Puberty Blues! I was so excited when DD's class got to watch the movie in class, in 2013 or thereabouts. It's timeless! I remember her commenting about how hot my generation's teenage crushes were!

One of my all time favorite books. I wore my copy out. I gave it to my son when he turned 12-13 and I thought he gave it away (or threw it away. It’s a wonder it’s still in one piece. lol) But I saw it on his bookshelf a couple of weeks back. A friend moved to Tulsa and has been wanting me to visit. I will have to take her up on her offer and make a pilgrimage to the museum.

I loved the book and the movie but don’t remember many of the details anymore. My DD is about at the age where she would enjoy it.
