this reminds me of a TikTok I just saw recently, a girl was filming her daughter take out her professionally dry cleaned and packed wedding dress from the 80's and when she opened the box it was empty. Empty! Full of tissue and that's it! The storage box didn't have a window on it and she never thought to open it up to make sure it would be there, I mean, who would? They were filming in anticipation of seeing her mom pull out the dress and instead they got the shock of their lives. In the video she starts pulling up layer after crunched up layer of tissue paper and then realizes in horror her dress was never packed in there! The place she had it cleaned and stored was no longer in business but it went viral with a bunch of women freaking out and opening their own gown boxes just to make sure theirs was safe. I remember when Liza Gibbons (I think it was her?) opened her box on Entertainment Tonight and found the same thing! Empty box!

Hung on to it, taking up space in a wardrobe for 30 years, before being checked in a skip

For everyone saying their dresses are ugly or dated, if the dress fits someone in a future generation or is too big, many times a good seamstress can alter it into a whole new modern style or size it down. Another option is to have pieces of it incorporated into a new dress or as others have mentioned repurposing it into ring bearer pillows, the liner for a flower girl’s basket, pew bows or another piece that can be passed down as a family heirloom.

My dd (not yet engaged) wants to upcycle it to wear to her rehearsal dinner. I hope it works out. If not, it will definitely be time to part with it.

I still have my Mom's beautiful classic 1950s dress, along with mine (early 90s). Oldest DD loved my Mom's dress but ultimately decided to get her own. (Mom's was tea length, and DD wanted a long gown.) Neither dress is middle DD's style (and she'd not anywhere close to getting engaged/married). That said, I can't see ever wanting to get rid of either of them (both very sentimental to me and DDs). At some point I'll probably have at least mine made into something else but for now they're both safe in the wardrobe.
My sister wore my veil when she got married a few years after I did. It made me really happy to see someone else use it.

I pitched mine when I pitched the man.
On her 50th wedding anniversary, my partners mom unpacked her wedding dress (her daughter would never wear it) and wore it a final time. She surprised her husband (got ready with the help of daughters in law) and we played their wedding song as she entered the room. She and my partners dad posed like the wedding photo that has been on display for 50 years.
Then she took it off, and put it in a box for donation. It was a fantastic day of joy for us all. It’s such a beautiful thing to see a couple so happy and with such a history. And to celebrate it with them. She said it was more meaningful having the small group of us there, and were all the result of that day.
Still makes me tear up thinking about her beautiful, happy smile that day ❤️

My gown was still in perfect shape, so I donated it. Don't know if anyone would wear it, but for some bride who was in need I hope she had a wonderful day.

I've never been married, so I don't have the problem of an ugly outdated wedding dress taking up space.
Decades ago, when I was in my 20s, I had my mum's wedding dress in my wardrobe. Mum and dad were married in 1967, and I loved the simple, retro style of the dress. I wanted to cut it into a mini dress for me to wear, not for a wedding but just as an everyday dress, but mum didn't want me to cut it. I have no idea where it is now. And I sure as hell wouldn't fit into it now!

My first one, I left with at my ex-in-laws. Good riddance to all.
Fast forward to 2020, Nick proposed and I ordered an inexpensive but beautiful (in the pictures) ballgown from China. I joked that if it came and was all janky it woukd be my covid deess (this was Feb of 2020). It came and was beautiful. We planned a big wedding for October. Then...covid, for real. We decided to scale back. My idea was us, 2 witnesses and my friend as officiant on the beach. We compromised with 30 people on our deck. I wore a $30 ivory lace sundress. It was perfect. Thabkfully no one got sick, except our aunt who tossed her cookies after eating strawberry pie and bellinis in the hot sun. Someone called an ambulance while we were taking pictures. Ain't a wedding til the paramedics show up!
I don't know if I will ever get to wear my ball gown. It hangs in my dressing room. I still love my sundress. I kind of want to wear it but I feel a little funny wearing what was my wedding dress to brunch or whatever.

I know someone who has her grandmother’s wedding dress on a mannequin in the guest room. It’s a pretty dress but I have mixed feelings about doing that. It’s both pretty and slightly creepy.

There’s a historic home in my area that the public can tour that has several of the family’s wedding gowns going back to the early 1900’s or maybe even before displayed on dress forms in one of the bedrooms along with photos of the brides that wore them. I think it’s kind of cool.

I borrowed my best friends tea length, off the rack wedding dress when I eloped. I had it cleaned and sent it back to her.

My dress was super simple, clean lines, no lace. I wish now I had worn something fancier/princess, but at the time it was exactly what I wanted and it fit in my budget. LOL. It is an off white color (white washed me out too much. I don't think my daughter will want to go that direction at all, but I am holding onto it in case either of my college aged kids want to have ring bearer pillows made out of it or anything.

Both my girls are 5 or 6 inches taller than I am so even if they wanted to wear it they couldn’t. I had my dress made into Christmas ornaments this year. They turned out so well, absolutely gorgeous. My family really loved

I'm having my dress made into a robe for my daughter to wear while getting ready for her wedding, 4 months and 2 days! I have done the same. unboxthedress.com. My younger daughter will also wear it when she marries. I'm also having a pocket square made (or something like that), in case my son wants something to wear. Trying to plan ahead!! At no charge, they will hold onto the extra material for 12-18 months in case you decide you want anything else made. It is not a cheap process but both my daughters loved the idea of wearing it as a robe on their wedding day.

I wore my great grandmother's dress from 1908. I was the 8th person in the family to wear it. One of my girls would like to wear it when/if they get married. It is still white and beautiful. My grandmother kept it rolled up in an old cotton sheet so I have kept it that way also.

I am on a lot of cooking TT but not farming and cows haha. I see interior design, funny kid things, politics and cute animal stuff mostly. I've almost completely abandoned tv nowdays for TikTok, I agree its freaking addicting!
