Total first world problem, eh?
DH makes instant oatmeal many mornings, in the microwave. It often overflows, creating a mess and of course, he loses some of it. I remember I used to have a couple of tricks to it back when I worked and took it with me, but I don't remember what they were. The bowl is plenty big, it's just that the oatmeal kind of climbs the walls as it cooks. We can come up with ways to minimize the mess but not the loss of food, which from his pov is tragic.
Help my starving hubby, please!
(We do make baked oatmeal that he heats up a lot of mornings, too, but sometimes life gets too hectic to get around to making it in time - so "premake a big pot of steel cut oats" or something like that is obvious but not useful here.)

Bigger bowl! That's the only way I've found to keep it all in.

It never overflows for me. I use a bigger bowl so definitely try that!

I tend to microwave for 3/4 of the suggested time, give it a stir and then microwave for the remaining time.

I make mine in a large coffee mug instead of a bowl. I ate instant oatmeal every single day for a year while I was breastfeeding for milk production and never had a mug overflow.

I know you say the bowl is big enough, but maybe even bigger? I use these bowls and never have any issues. I think that's the one he uses. We've had them long enough that I can't read the size on the bottom, though - it could be a little smaller, like 24 oz.

I've read that covering it is bad, and just causes steam buildup. He's covered it with paper towels before, which helps a bit but not enough. I think the stirring partway through is what I used to do. It's been a long time since I made instant oatmeal, so I just can't recall.

I have a set of these I got at Costco years ago. Do those get really hot in the micro? I've had knockoff things like that but they would get too hot to handle when you tried to take them out.

Another one that says "bigger bowl." I just finished my daily bowl. I use the old fashioned oats. I put an equal amount of water and oats and cook on high for 2 minutes. The quick oats only needed a minute. I prefer the old fashioned oats. Anyway, this works great for me. It does climb the bowl but has never gone over because I guess I have the right bowl size.

I make mine in a big mug and cover it, that has helped me with overflow. Good luck to him. It makes such a mess when it overflows.

I heat it for 30 seconds, stir, then do another 30ish seconds. Sometimes it starts climbing the sides, but it hasn't overflowed.
Side note, what about overnight oats? I make a big batch 2x a week. DH and the 5yr old love them. 2 cups of oats, 2 cups of vanilla greek yogurt, 2 cups of almond milk. 2 tablespoons or so of chia seeds (if I have them), splash of vanilla, good shake of cinnamon, stir. They add bananas or diced apples to it, sometimes some nuts. Super good and filling. Other than 5 minutes to get it ready 2x a week, it takes almost no time in the morning.

What about boiling or microwaving the water only, pour over, then letting it sit? That's what we've always done. We usually bring instant oatmeal camping.

I always pour water from the kettle in rather than microwaving. Fixes your problem, and I feel like I have more control over the consistency.

I don't use the microwave for making oatmeal. I have one of those electric kettles that heats my water up super fast. I find I have more control and less mess with my oatmeal that way.

I put it on the micro for a minute, stir, add just a bit more milk and do another minute. No overflow.

Yep, mine used to always overflow until I started using a bigger bowl. Now it's perfect!

I have never considered microwaving instant oatmeal. I just pour boiling water over it (in a bowl).

You just pour boiling water over it, I've never done it any other way. No mess and you can easily control how thick it is.

I stop and stir it as it climbs to the top.

I don't measure the liquid- just put the packet in a bowl or mug and add water until it's just covering the oatmeal and micro for 1 minute. when it's done, I stir in almond milk until the thickness is right for me.

Also he could lower the power to 70 percent.
