gracieplusthree sorry about your major injuries. And yes, wrist and arm injuries are very serious. I have a friend who has had similar injuries March 16th last year. Because she also had a foot injury and lives alone she was in a rehab facility for over a month. Her fingers were swollen for what seems a very long time. I sent her coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, colored Bic stick pens. lined paper, and a spiral note books so she could practice writing with her non-dominate hand. All that to say her surgeon said 6 months to a year for recovery. Protect your wrist in every way possible!!! While still in a cast hers got bumped which caused more problems. Take it slow and easy!!! You CAN do this!

My DH did this about a year ago (March). Pretty major break with surgery, 2 plates, a rod and screws. 2 surgeries; one to fix, the other to remove rod and screws. One plate stays in forever or until it bothers him. He finished working a pen of cattle after he broke it. Called me, so I could call in to the hospital to get him in. Saw the doc, and not an ER visit that way. Had consult with surgeon a day later, then different surgeon a couple days after that, with surgery following the next day. So that part wasn't great. But we did end up with the best surgeon. DH did work all through this part, but a little lighter duty. Took the surgery day off, and stayed home the next day. Took a couple pain meds the first day, and one the second. But was back at it after that. His goal was to be able to be planting in April. He did. Had second surgery to remove most of the hardware and did DIY physical therapy (farmers!). Second surgery was very smooth. Didn't take any pain meds at all. His goal was to be back 100% by harvest, and he was. Last surgery was in July, and surgeon fully released him in September. He still is doing his "physical therapy" to keep the range of motion going in his wrist.

My hairdresser tripped over a rock at the beach and broke her wrist and something in her forearm. She has a plate and 6 screws. Needed to be off of work for 3 months but is feeling great now. I hope you have the speediest recovery possible! ((( hugs )))

He still is doing his "physical therapy" to keep the range of motion going in his wrist. to me, this is so important. You cannot take a break from PT, not even a day or it will really set u back!

Talk first to your Doctor. Wrap at ice pack in a towel then wrap around your cast and hold in place with rubber bands for a few minutes at a time. Ask about painkillers. Some recommend Tylenol over Advil etc for better healing. Medical supply stores sell a special thick plastic bag/sleeve to put your arm in for when you have a shower. Plastic wrap from Costco also works. Start Physio as soon as possible.

I broke my wrist about 4 years ago. Mine was pretty bad, broken in 4 spots but miraculously they were able to set it without requiring surgery.
Not going to sugar coat this it was awful. Mine was also my dominate hand and it was difficult to work, I work on the computer and I worked from home for 4 weeks left handed. Just the simplest task is so hard, getting dressed / going to the bathroom and wiping with the "wrong" hand.
I believe I was casted for 8 weeks but it was probably about 6 months until I had full range of motion. I still struggle with opening jars and things that I never did prior to my wrist break but now I forget which one I broke and have to remember that it was my right hand. I hope you heal quickly gracieplusthree and I am sorry this has happened to you.

I have no experience with that type of break/injury, but I sure hope you heal well and fast!

I did something similar and crushed my wrist in a bike fall back in 2016. I still have a plate and had 2 rods which were removed about 6 weeks after the surgery. My Dr is a top orthopedic surgeon and said if he did the work correctly I would only be in a cast for 4-7 days which I was. Then I had 3 months of twice a week OT with a hand to shoulder specialist followed by an additional 3 months going once a week. They both told me it was unlikely that with my injury I would ever have full range of motion. I worked my wrist every day doing whatever exercise or massage I was told to do, sometimes multiple times a day.
I have full complete range of motion now but it took me 9 months before I could fasten my bra in the back and about 5 months before I could smash a clove of garlic with a knife blade. When a storm is approaching, I feel it in my wrist. I had to increase my watch strap a notch to accommodate the plate. I have no problems doing push ups or planks and I row regularly.
My advice would be to concentrate on range of motion as that really defined my recovery.
Wishing you a speedy and full recovery

It never happened to me, but it did to The Queen of Everything. Her recovery time was extended because she didn't follow Dr. orders and didn't follow through with her PT. Things go better if you follow Doctor orders.

I am right there with you. Broke mine on the 8th and had surgery yesterday. Still numb from nerve block. They say I can start rehab in two weeks, but for now, nothing but finger and elbow exercises once no longer numb. I’m getting better with my non dominant hand every day. Thank goodness for my husband. He is taking great care of me.
