Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman checked himself into a Washington, D.C., hospital Wednesday night to be treated for clinical depression, according to his office, less than a week after checking out.
I’m glad he is receiving the care he needs. It is not uncommon to suffer from depression after a stroke. Of course there are those who will jump on this viciously instead of accepting that we all need treatment for various illnesses at different times in our lives.

Is he the one who ran against Dr Oz? I liked him a lot. I hope he gets help and is able to get back to fighting the good fight!

Don't read Twitter if you are sensitive. It's gross.
I'm glad he is getting the help he needs. I wish that for everyone who suffers from mental or physical health problems.

I wish our society would get out of the dark ages when it comes to mental illness. Mental illness is no different from physical illness-it just happens to occur in the brain. That's it. That's what it is.
Good for him for getting help when he needed it.

Unfortunately 'they' don't care about anyone who does not meet their warped standards!
May John Fetterman receive the treatment he needs and has asked for. Peace for him and his family!!

I like him a lot and hope that he’ll be able to feel more like himself soon. My mom had a stroke in her 40s and I remember knowing that depression isn’t uncommon after something like that.

conversely how does someone handle a high pressure job in the vile world of politics with the issues he is grappling with? I wish him peace & healing surrounded by a loving family.

I hope he gets the help he needs. I would say that no matter his politics. It’s sad that so many have such a hard time getting the help they need and the stigma that goes along with it that many never seek the help they need. I really wish that we were doing a better job with mental health awareness and helping those that need it.

I think his stroke has affected him more then he thought it would. He has recovered more then many, more quickly too. Although he has had some long term issues, which are to be expected, but also a big adjustment to his life.

jeremysgirl, your Facebook post is thoughtfully written and exactly on point, especially this: "You might feel like a politician is very removed from your personal space so you might not see how your judgment of them impacts your friends who suffer similar fates." If we could all give each other the grace we would like to receive ourselves, the world would be a better place.

I'm glad that he's seeking help and I hope the treatment he receives does indeed help. I wish that was an option for all who need medical care especially for mental health

My first thought is that I really hope they can help him and that he's in a better place soon. He's had the stroke, the hard recovery, a new incredibly stressful job after a stressful year and he's living away from his family most of time. I think you'd have to be super human not to be affected by all of that. I don't know anything about what kind of environment Walter Reed can provide him but I hope it's peaceful, restful and actually therapeutic.
My second thought is that I'm not going to pay any attention to the opportunistic vultures. They'll spew the crap they spew no matter what. They didn't care about John Fetterman yesterday and they won't care about him tomorrow. They only want to score political points and stoke the outrage machine.
My final thought is the most hopeful. People really like him. People of all ages and all backgrounds. And if someone like John Fetterman can admit that he needs help with his mental health issues, I think it's going to result in a lot of other people feeling safe to do the same thing. I don't know if we will ever remove the stigma from this in our society but I think John Fetterman just moved the bar a whole lot further than it's been moved in a long time.
ETA: I will also add that I think after the last 3 years of the Covid pandemic, I suspect there are a lot more families dealing with this type of thing than our society has yet started to grapple with. It's my guess that there are a lot more families out there identifying with John Fetterman and his family than agreeing with the flame throwers. They may not say it out loud but they are living it.

I had a stroke last March, coming up on a year. I can understand the depression that comes with it.

I've had both a heart attack and a stroke. Both force you deal with your mortality and along with that comes guilt about why you survived it but someone else did not. It's a very confusing and frightening time. I totally understand why Sen. Fetterman feels the way he does. Bravo to him for getting the help he needs.

I have been dealing with exactly this since I had to have the emergency brain surgery for the tumor. I definitely feel like I have been circling the drain of depression lately. Big, big hugs to you and all the Peas that have dealt with these issues. I give massive props to Sen. Fetterman to being honest and upfront about it. Hopefully this will turn a page on the stigma of depression and mental health problems in general.

I think he is so brave. He's not running and hiding from anything. He faces his challenges head-on. Good for him.

I wish him the best! There are so many significant changes that have happened for him in less than a year. Add to it his stroke and the collateral underlying conditions that can accompany, not only any major medical crisis, but a stroke specifically, makes it not too surprising. I admire his commitment to being public and his courage to put it out to the public.
I am not sure why this thread is labeled "politics." Although he is known because of his high profile campaign and political office, personal health (be it mental or physical) is a human topic, not political. The label feels like it diminishes the overall importance to the conversation, although I believe that was not the intent of the OP.
