My brother died this morning.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September. When it was diagnosed, it was already all over his body. That was when we/he learned that the test for prostate cancer is not part of a man's annual physical if he is on Medicare. My brother thought he was being tested.
His last days were horrible after the cancer went into his bones. Please badger the men in your life to have prostate tests done after they reach age 65. Seems Medicare does not require it then and the man has to ask for it.

I am so sorry for your loss. When is the testing supposed to start? For example, colonoscopies are recommended around 50 yrs, although I am not 50 yet and I have a script for a test....

The recommended age to begin colonoscopies is now 45. The recommended age to begin prostate screening is 55, although if there is family history screening at 40-54 is recommended.

I'm so very sorry about your brother.
Medicare is great, except where it's not. I know I found out coincidentally that they don't cover shingles vaccines, either. Not that I've heard of shingles being deadly, but it's an easily avoidable, excruciating medical condition.
I would be happy to pay a bit more into taxes, etc. to cover these easily avoidable or early detectable conditions.
But again, my condolences on your brother.

I'm sorry for your loss.
My husband's doctor always includes a psa test with his annual blood tests. He always signs a paper at the lab that if insurance doesn't pay for it we will. Well worth it. We also get all the lab reports so we know what exactly what tests were run and if there are any issues.

Here's the problem, men don't like/want to go to the Doctor. The fact is, men should be getting examined by a doctor every 3 to 5 years, at age 50, every year. It's a matter of life and death. Women, I think, pretty much just do it

My condolences on the passing of your brother.
Screening is so critical to catch early-stage cancer. My father died from bladder cancer but he was so embarrassed about needing a urostomy, and fearful of doctors, it was diagnosed too late.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Cancer is horrible and takes too many lives. Getting screened is such a good reminder and a way for us all to honor those who did not survive.

So sorry to hear this. A friend’s Dh also had prostate cancer but was not diagnosed until it had advanced, because his MDs at the VA did not order annual PSAs. Remind your guys to ask for an annual test!

I'm so sorry for your loss! I hope your memories of your brother will give you comfort during this difficult time.
Thank you for bringing awareness to early screening for cancer. My mother died of colon cancer and my sister is battling the metastases from her colon cancer. Neither of them had regular colonoscopies and both of their cancers could have been detected early, when treatment was much more likely to be successful. I get regular colonoscopies (I'm on the 5 year plan) and each colonoscopy I've had has found at least one pre-cancerous polyp. While I detest the colonoscopy prep with the heat of a thousand suns (the taste of it just makes me gag) I still do it.
Sending prayers for comfort and peace for your family.

I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you for the reminder. When I learned a few years ago that doctors are often not screening men because they don't want to cause them extra anxiety with false positives, it really made my blood boil. My dad's PSA was borderline and his doctor, being very thorough, sent him to a urologist. He was diagnosed with a moderate to aggressive prostate cancer and treated. His urologist told me that if my dad did nothing he would live 8-10 years and the last ones would not be pleasant. As it was he lived 18 more years. He had some issues in the last 3 years from the radiation he had before but it was well worth it. When I think of all the anxiety women go through and all men have to have is a simple blood test.
